I'm at that point in my young life where I'm thinking about who in my family gets what. Some of you know and can relate to this. Anyway, most kids today don't read books, they gat their info off the web in some form or other. My daughters don't want these books and sine my wife passed away, frankly I don't have the kind of hold on my 'stuff' as I may have once did.

The following books are either first edition or collectors edition as best I can tell. Anyone who wants any of these, let me know. I'm giving them away. Just cover shipping.

1. Roy Coykendell - Duck Decoys & How to Rig Them. Collectors Edition., comes with jacket. mint condition

2. George Bird Evans - Troubles with Bird Dogs, First edition. used

For those members who may be planning to attend the New Years shoot at Major Waldron's, I can bring these books up if you are interested. THey are free

3. John Allen Knight - Ruffed Grouse, first edition 1947

4. William F. Brown - How to Train Hunting Dogs, first edition 1945

5. Eugene V. Connett - Duck Shooting Along the Atlantic Tidewater, 1947 first edition

6. Ducks Unlimited - Return to Big Grass, 1986, only 1,000 copies made. This one is personally signed by Matt Connally, ex President DU. comes with jacket. mint condition

I'm at that point in my young life...

Allen, What a kind offer, and it looks like these books are going to good homes. I have struck up a friendship with a young man who occasionally hunts with me. We have no children and, like you, those younger family members -- nieces and nephews -- do not hunt and would see our "possessions" for what cash they might bring them. I'm hoping I can leave some my collectable sporting books to our University library, but I doubt they have the room or inclination to house such a collection.

I hope you continue to find good homes for your very nice books.

Mills, you may have #6. Pm me your address.
All books spoken for now. Thank you gents.

On a similar note, i have a beautiful African Kudu mount from a so africa safari some yrs ago. My daughter had it in her great room until they sold their home and downsized. My home will not accommodate it either. I tried to donate this near mint condition full shoulder mount to Harvards Museum of Natural History for their African but their Dir of Donations won't return my calls and text messages. I shot this animal and So Africas premier taxidermy shop, 'Lifeform' mounted it. I need to find a good home for this Kudu. Its quite large. Anyway, if someone wants it, come and get it.

I didn’t see #3 go. It must have been a “curb trade”.

Very generous, Allen; all of the books have a secondary market value.

#3 went via pm to me. Gents, i will try to ship these books out this week but it is a busy week and i will be out of pocket for at least 2 days. Ill get them out as soon as i can. Merry Christmas to all. Thanks again for taking these off my hands. Now if i can just find someone to take this Kudu mount.....

Allen, I'll see you at the New Year shoot.

Bring the Kudu with you. I'll have my grandson with me and he'd love it I'm sure.
His mother (my daughter) on the other hand, won't be happy...
On the other hand, maybe you shouldn't bring it.

Larry has some high ceilings though, and he has several mounts displayed there....

Dean, I would prefer not to lug the Kudu up there unless there is serious interest in someone wanting it

Allen - don’t bother shipping mine. Next time we get together is fine.

I’ll take half the blame for not collecting it at Major Waldron’s on New Year’s Day.

To all those to whom I have sent books, you owe me nothing. The shipping cost was nominal. Just enjoying them will be good enough. Thank you all for taking them off my hands.

Allen good luck with the Kudu. The Grey Ghost of Africa is an amazing animal and is compared to our Elk. Before I moved I had vaulted ceilings and had one there but in this house the wife said no more dead animals upstairs. I did manage to get a fine Elk in but that was it. My basement has 8ft ceilings and the Kudu sits very close to the floor. The second one was done on a pedastal mount with a very drastic turn to fit.

They are a very nice animal to bad you need to find a new home for it.

Ive tried calling the curator at one of Boston's natural history museums but she won't even return my calls and ive left full and complete info on her voice mail. I'm trying to give the dam thing away.

Dean Romig

Did you try the Harvard Museum of Natural History?

.

allen newell
01-12-2019, 06:37 PM
Yes. That is where I've been calling. Maybe if I was a Harvard grad and not Rutgers it would make a difference in the response. Anyway that is what a good friend of mine who is a Harvard grad keeps telling me. Lol

This full shoulder mount Kudu was done by South Africa's leading taxidermy company, Life Form. I paid a small fortune to have all my African trophies done by them.

Dean Romig

Maybe a personal visit to the head curator is in order.

Allen:

Have you tried any of the local gun clubs?

Maynard has a Caribou mount on the wall in the Lounge; maybe they could use a Kudu.

I have been a Member there for over 20 years.

Tell 'em I sent you.

What was the horn length? Can you post pictures of it?Have you tried sporting goods stores or even restaurants. We have a steak house here with some really bad taxidermy in it.

allen newell
01-13-2019, 02:55 PM
Rich, the horns measure approx 44 inches.

Rich Anderson
01-13-2019, 03:21 PM
Thats a nice mount. They are a fun animal to hunt and very tasty as well. Heres an idea, if you don't find a home for it donate it to the PGCA for the silent auction:whistle:

They do take up a bit of space much like an elk.

allen newell
01-13-2019, 03:36 PM
Well, if Russell's club does not take it, the PGCA can have it. But someone has to pick it up at my house.
The cost to ship it would be very high. If someone from up here was driving down to the meeting would take it, that would help.

The Kudu problem has been solved. The Hyannis chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) has agreed to take it for their upcoming banquet and I get a much needed tax deduction for 2019 tax yr. No other potential takers that I had contacted came forward. My caribou mount problem has been solved as well.

It's to bad your having to give away your trophies. I'd be very hard pressed to do it myself:nono:

allen newell
01-20-2019, 05:24 PM
I have no room in the house for them and neither do my 2 daughters. I dont need the trophies to remind me of my safari hunt. Have plenty of pictures.

Rich Anderson

At one time my then boss told me I should work now and go to places like Africa and Alaska when I retired. My reply was when I retired I wanted to sit in a recliner with a whiskey and look at them and I do just that:). If my wife would only let me enjoy a cigar while reminiscing it would be perfect.

Rich, I'm building a small two car garage about 80 feet from the house in case my future includes bourbon and cigars. I already have the bourbon part taken care of. In my twentieth year of retirement, the "garage-shooting range" is only my latest wild and crazy scheme.

Rich Anderson

I think the garage shooting range is a great idea.

allen newell
01-21-2019, 08:36 AM
Rich, while i have many pictures of my Africa safari and many other hunting and fly fishing trips, I have great memories and they are satisfying enough for me. I am with you and Bill however on the bourbon and cigars. 👌
