Charlie sounds awesome. I'm gonna take my 10 lifter to Wyoming this year for sage chickens. Doves would be a blast. I have 12 gauge inserts for my 10 lifter.

There is so much interest in loading and shooting the short 10, maybe the powers that be should consider a separate thread or topic for it. It is something to think about.

i m loading no 7 1/2 shot...shot a dr pepper can at 32 steps right barrel 13 hits left barrel i could not count the holes...the shells were the paper hull low brass victor shells had to use the old no 57 primer in them...the smoke really smalled good coming out of those old hulls...got 50 shells loaded now run out of empty hulls guess i need to buy some new ones to load up...the old gun was a 10 ga lifter low serial no 5884...its one of those plain steel marked barrel guns..bores a little rough but not bad...i bought this thing off the internet for a 12 ga when it arrived it was a 10 ga it was so tight and good looking i just kept it...hammers are tight as a new gun i do not think it s been shot much...have not weighed the gun but guessing about 8 1/2 lbs i can handle it pretty good....the ded dot loads sounded good with not to muck recoil very small... the 19 grains of reddot with 1 1/8 ounce of lead is the best small game and dove load you can find...in the 10 ga ....these old early lifters are fun guns the barrels are really swamped a lot looking down the barrels between the hammers and the bead you have the best sight pattern you could ask for....charlie

Charlie, I hunted dove last year with a grade 3 10ga lifter with 20gr of 700 X and 1 1/8 oz of 7 1/2 shot. Worked good and lots of fun. Carvel

caravel these old guns are sure lot of fun way more than a neww auto loader or new pump gun...but i m not putting out the old a 5 browning or something like the model 12....the reddot load is a good load i have never tried 700 x....will keep this in mind...i got to go do some bush hogging were we can see a dove and find it....charlie

loaded up about 20 more hulls i found in my pile of old hulls got 10 more to load it will give me a little over 2 boxes looking forward to shooting these shells up...gona carry a 20 ga parker a v grade gun as backup in case i run out of shells....gona use factory shells in the 20 ga...so if you hunt doves with your old 10 ga from time to time try the reddot load of pete lesters you will be impressed...charlie

I’ve been using that 1 1/8 ounce 19 grains of Red Dot in my open choked EH with the factory 28” barrels for skeet with excellent results . And I’ve been contemplating using it for dove as well . Only problem is getting invited to a good shoot !

I’ve loaded about 200 of the 1 1/8 10 gauge loads last week . So I ordered 300 new Remington hulls and 2500 16 gauge 1/8” card wads . Outta keep me stocked for awhile . Each one of the 1 1/8 ounce kids uses up three of the 16 gauge card wads and each slug load uses two of the wads .

Craig, in your neck of the woods, invitations to shoot doves with the "elite" must be a dime a dozen.

Loading 10 G this weekend, almost finished. 50 23 grs Green Dot 1 1/4 # 7 another 50 same charge # 6 for Crows. Then 300 19 Red Dot 1 1/8 # 7 1/2 for Clays

Takes longer than knocking out 12 G still a fun job.

you said that rite william the 10 takes longer to load but sure is fun shooting...i ve got about 75 rounds loaed in the 19 grain reddot and 1 1/8 ounce of shot....to me this is the perfect 10 ga low power shell...no kick andlays squirls and doves out to 50 yards....

Charlie wondering about that # 7 Shot. Lot of Parker’s were patterned with # 7, friend of mine and I split a two bag order of 7 just to see what it will do .

tell us something about this 10 ga slug load i m very interested in this right now....charlie

I actually have a pair of slug loads .

Both use 30 grains of SR7625 .

In the one using the 630 grain 10 gauge version of the Lyman Sabot Slug I use an unaltered SP-10 wad then drop two of the 16 gauge 1/8" wads in the shotcup followed by the slug (the hollow base of the slug is filled with hot glue to keep anything else from pushing up into the cavity). Then it's crimped same as a bird shot load .

My other slug is a .734" 730 grain slug a friend in Ohio came up with to be used in a rifled 12 gauge gun. With this one I again fill the hollow base with hot glue . But I remove the petals from the SP-10 wad seat it and take a .010" mylar wrap and insert it followed by one 16 gauge 1/8" card wad then the 730 grain slug on top and crimp as if bird shot .

Both of these slugs I've cast from a 50/50 alloy of wheelweights / pure lead .
In both cases I shoot three shot groups at 25 yards first from the right barrel and then from the left barrel followed by a two shot group of one from each barrel . Generally I'll load the right barrel with a slug and the left barrel with whatever size buckshot I'm interested at the time .

In my 28" EH the three shot groups from either barrel could be covered by the lid off a small coffee can , well that is with the 630 grain slug . That gun doesn't seem to like the heavier slug as well . But in my EH 3 frame 32" that's full of even more full it likes the heavier slug and shoots them quite well same can be saif for my 3 frame 32" NH .

Dean have not shot them yet. Want to see how the # 7 patterns at 45 yards then see how they break clay targets at distance.

Putting 2 each #8 # 7 1/2 # 7 in a scale pan the 7 is noticeably larger, mlookng at ballistic charts very litttle difference. Probably no good reason to use 7 at all.

Probably just that much more mass to ensure breaking clays and bones.

True, # 7 seems appropriate for 10 G too. Most clubs won’t allow 10 G or # 7. Luckily a few near me do.

Was told i could not shoot my 10 on trap field, why i ask, too big they said. Asked if 1-1/8 is what they shot at 1200 ft/sec, yes they said, so 1oz at 1125 is too powerful? The powers that be huddled and said huh what, yes you shoot a heavier faster load than the short 10. Oh i guess it's ok then. Twice that has happened twice light dawned.

I don't reload, but do shoot RST 10 gauge and it is actually pretty light compared to some modern 12 gauge loads

I just ordered a flat of RST 10’s 1 1/8 of #8’s and a couple boxes of #6 for a fellow that just acquired an 1876 lifter .

I should add that RST loads are all that you need for most shooting.

I load a rather diverse assortment of 1 1/8 , 1 1/4 , 1 1/2 , buckshot , slugs and bismuth for mine .

I have Bismuth #1 , #2 and #4 on hand . Next week if my hulls arrive I'll most likely load up 25 of each size . Quite possibly in late January I just might be heading to south east Arkansas for a couple days of duck duck and no goose LOL's !

I have a friend of sorts that owns a rather large piece of excellent duck-deer-piggie real estate . My gunsmith buddy goes down each year for piggie hunting and one year I went along . When he goes is always at the end of the Arkansas duck season . When I went a few years back I took a GH 16 gauge a W&C Scott 10 gauge and a "few" rifles

I've always though of the 10ga as being the ideal gauge. One can load down to a light 1oz load, or anywhere up to a heavy 2oz load. You can't ask for much more. I shoot a 1oz load for targets and with that short of a shot column there's no deformation of shot and the patterns are really great.
