Got a 1882 E Remington hammer gun with decarbonized steel barrels, minimum wall .040 with scattered pitting .....how safe are these? Gun on face and tight just no experience with this barrel type.

Thanks

ps has the very useful .052 choke in both tubes :)

Scott: sorry for the qualifier, but no one can tell you if your gun is safe, and certainly not without knowing the wall thickness at the end of the chamber, the forcing cones, and every inch of the first 12" of barrel.

Quite a bit of information about 1/3 down here regarding Decarbonized/Bessemer Steel
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dnRLZgcuHfx7uFOHvHCUGnGFiLiset-DTTEK8OtPYVA/edit

Short version is that the tensile strength was greater than pattern welded tubes, and the "Parker Steel" used on Grade 1 PH & NH after 1917 was Decarbonized Steel.

Thank you for info, guess I could have been clearer not asking anyone if my gun in particular is safe just have no experience with this type barrel and wondered in general if it was safe.

No problem Scott.
Most dealers who report "MWT" do not provide the more meaningful (to our digits) numbers.

Although I only impersonate a metallurgist and ballistician on internet forums, I am at some risk of being mistaken for an "expert" by a personal injury lawyer, so always add the qualifier :(

i use to have a de carbonized steel barrels on a remington 12 ga i shot it a lot at doves and what ever never gave no problems even had several small pits in the barrel....i have a plain steel barrel on 2 ten ga guns and i shoot them with no problems..i think the plain steel parker barrels a remington decarbonized barrels are made ou of the same steel...the decarbonized steel is a pretty stout steel in strengh...charlie
