1882 10ga. TA Straight Stock 0 Grade

I couldn’t pass this one up yesterday, though I have been trying to buy nicer Parkers lately. I like straight grip guns and even though it was a grade 0 gun, I felt I had to rescue it. It’s a 10 gauge, 32” Plain Twist barrels. 2 7/8” chambers on a #2 frame weighing 8 ½ pounds. The barrels had cold blue or some type of finish that I slowly removed last night. The stock also looks like it’s covered in a heavy finish as the checkering looks more filled in than worn. I still have some gentle cleaning to do.

Today I shot a mix of black powder and RST shells. The gun shot black powder shells extremely well, I actually think I shot better with black powder than I did with RST’s. I was using my Track of the Wolf brass shells 2 3/4dr. of 2f and 1 1/8oz of shot loaded the traditional way with nitro card, fiber wad, etc…

Overall, the gun seems like it was used but not too abused. The gun is on face and tight, the bores are good with some very minor pitting close to the chambers, certainly nothing to worry about.

A few more pictures. You can see that the order# is on the barrel flats, this is the first time I have seen this outside of TPS. You can tell how much fun I had from my bag of empties. I have my 55 brass shells soaking, and might even be ready to do it all again next weekend…

The stock pictures look dark. I have seen others post with before and after pictures of similar looking stocks that were simply cleaned of dirt and years of grunge that looked wonderful after cleaning.

I don't remember what was used to clean them, therefore I hesitate to give specifics about how it was done. Maybe someone with experience can speak up? Murphy's soap maybe??

Thanks Steve, That makes me feel a little better about buying this for myself so close to the holidays. I think I was trying to hide my excitement over a grade 0 gun by acknowledging that my Parker collecting/tastes “should” be evolving. It was hard not be excited shooting it though…

I was able to clean up the barrels a bit more this morning. I did try some Carnauba wax on the barrels(which I figured was safe since it should be easy enough to take it off). It definitely helped.

I am not sure what to do with the wood yet, this is new territory for me. Though, I would be interested in trying to clean the wood myself.

mighty nice shooting piece you got there them 10 ga s are fine shooting guns and you got a light weight 10 ga..all my 10 gas are 9 1/4 lbs or heavier...i ve loaded buckshot in the brass hulls they do fine work on deer....charlie

I had asked Jay his serial number and he was kind enough to give it to me . I have a 12 ga top lever same looking gun as the 10 ga But mine has no dolls head , Both guns made the same year Could you order them that way or was this common they are about 1500 guns apart

Thanks Charlie and the gun does feel light for a 10. The 8 ½ pounds was from a bathroom scale so I may be off a few ounces. Here is a picture of the barrels at the chambers, they are not that thick/heavy. The gun feels good and balance well.

Black powder loaded in brass shells, 10 gauge gun, and below freezing temperatures..... a perfect combination.

Looks like someone braved the chill in New England and went to Addieville perhaps??

Hi Frank, I didn't really notice the cold so yes it was a perfect combination.

I was actually shooting at Peace Dale Shooting Preserve in South Kingstown. It's only 10 minutes from my house.

Addevielle is about 40 minutes away from me and make it up there a handful of times a year for clays. It would be great to get a few PGCA members together for a black powder preserve hunt there.

I have it's twin in 12ga, made in 1883, 32"bbls, v tight chokes. Very nice gussied up gun that is far and away my best duck gun for ducks over the horizon. Incredible trap gun also.
