Fall Southern Side By Side
Challenge Rules
2017
Well folks, it’s almost that time again! The 2017 Southern SXS fall Classic is less than two months away and we thought it might be a good idea to refresh everyone’s memory regarding the new rules format that we introduced a couple of years ago, since we got hurricaned out last year!
LC Smith vs Parker 5 Stand Challenge Event-
Team make-up has changed since this event was last contested two years ago.
Qualifying- Qualifying for this event will take place between Thursday morning Oct. 19th, and Saturday afternoon October 21st.
A qualifying venue 5 Stand will be set up in the same location as in years past that you can shoot as many times as you desire, with your highest score being your qualifying attempt.
Team Make-Up- Team Parker and Team LC Smith will each consist of 10 shooters. The first 6 positions will be filled by the top six qualifying scores for each team, and they will be designated before any consideration is given to filling the remaining 4 positions with Special Slot Shooters.
The Special Slot Shooter Positions for each team will consist of:
1) The Junior shooter (18 years old or younger) with the highest qualifying score.
2) The Lady shooter with the highest qualifying score.
3) The Senior shooter (At least 60 years old but less than 70) with the highest qualifying score.
4) The Super Senior shooter (70 years old or older) with the highest qualifying score.
In the event that either team is unable to field any of the Special Slot Squad positions, Rick Hemingway will designate a shooter for that position whose qualifying score is either equal to or less than the qualifying score of the opposing teams properly filled position. Rick will make these decisions without input from either team.
Final Shoot-off- The final shoot-off for the 5 Stand Challenge Event will be at a time yet to be determined Saturday afternoon. Trophy’s will be distributed to the winning team immediately following the shoot-off.
American Classic Trap Challenge-
This event will be run exactly as it was two years ago, and is open to all Vintage American Shotgun Manufacturers. There will be a 50 target qualifier with the winning team chosen by the top 3 highest qualifying scores from each team. There will not be a shoot-off for the Trap Challenge.
Qualifying -One can attempt to qualify as many times as desired, with your highest score being your qualifying attempt. Qualifying will begin Thursday at noon, and conclude Saturday afternoon in conjunction with the end of qualifying for the 5 Stand Challenge event.
LC Smith vs Parker Hammer-Gun Challenge Event
This challenge event will be contested between 8:00 am and 1:00 pm on Sunday. The rules will be the same as for the Trap Challenge, except that there will only be 30 targets per qualifying attempt, and qualifying will take place with new targets on the 5-Stand challenge venue. The winning team and HOA shooter will be recognized at the General Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
Fees-
Target Fees- 5 Stand Challenge, 30 targets each, $15.00 per attempt, Thurs, Fri, Sat.
Hammer-Gun Challenge, 30 targets, $15.00 per attempt, Sunday only.
Trap Challenge, 50 targets each, $25.00 per attempt., Thurs, Fri, Sat.
Event Entry/Trophy Fees- Each shooter must pay a single entry/trophy fee of $15.00 for each of the challenge events in which they participate. For example, if a shooter was to participate in both the Trap and 5-stand Challenges, they would have to pay a single entry fee of $30.00, regardless of how many times they attempted to qualify.
Sponsorships- As last year, we are gladly accepting Corporate Sponsorships of $50.00 each, and Individual Sponsorships of $25.00 each. If you care to participate, please make out your check to Backwoods Quail Club, and write 2017 Fall Classic Challenge Sponsorship on the Note line. Please mail your sponsorship check to:

Coming up in a few weeks now. . . . Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it this year, due to some family obligations that weekend. I am bummed about it, but hope everyone has a great time. This is a smaller version of the Spring Southern and you really get to visit with folks. There is great shooting as well.
Also FYI, I suggest you book your hotel room in advance, as they can fill up.

Do you have to be a member to shoot in the Parker-LC SMITH challenge Cup? My son is interested in trying to Qualify he is 14

Yes, you do have to be a member

If this young man is serious and shows up, might I suggest that the PGCA bestow upon him an honorary membership for one year... and allow him to at least try to qualify.
It might just promote youth involvement, and create a new member in the future...

John raises a good point. The rules should be the same for both teams, so I have an email into my counterpart at LC Smith to discuss.

I second Mr. Rise's motion.

I must respectively disagree with you on PGCA membership being required. John L & I initially organized this event and membership in either organization was specifically not required. It was required that you own the gun you shoot though. PGCA does not sponcer this event or have any involvement in any way. They were recently asked again to sponcer it in a letter to John Davis and declined.

Just to clarify, and not get into the middle of any 'fracus' the PGCA is limited according to its bylaws to the number of events it can sponsor. It was not John Davis' decision to deny any request of sponsorship... he was merely following the law.

Thanks for the clarification. There is not "fracus" just a friendly clarification of the rules.. I shot with Mills and his sharp shooter wife, Julia ,this morning she easily out shot us both.

Mr. Romig,
Are the complete bylaws available on the PGCA's home page? If so could you please direct me to the article that limits the number of events sponsored I am probably missing it. Thanks.

Sorry for falling in so late on this one.
One nice thing about the Fall Southern is that she's a pretty informal event. As such, we've got liberty to make it the best event we can for as many folks as possible, & not just the top guns of both Teams Parker & LC Smith. Don't get me wrong, there's a place for that, and it's in Sanford NC in the Spring!
David D refreshes my memory on the topic, and I believe he's correct. In any event, we've acknowledged previously that we're in a deficit situation regarding torch bearers going forward. Whether it's in Sanford or Georgetown, or the Vintage Cup, or any other event sanctioned or not, I'd suggest that we encourage any minor with what appears to be an interest or knack for whackin & stackin 'em to participate. If that requires them to be a member of their respective organization I'd suggest that they be sponsored by either one or both organizations for their first years membership. Not a large expenditure for either group, and it might go a long way towards bolstering the beginners interest that brought them to the table to start with.
Just my two cents.

My apologies Mr. Pellegrini, and others, I misspoke. I too read through our bylaws and found no reference to my statement. However, I now see that it is in the PGCA Policies & Procedures.

I want to insure my comments are not interpreted in any way as being critical of PGCA or the BOD. I think we have the best BOD we have ever had ,and John David is a friend and doing a great thankless job. Guys, please keep up the good work as it is greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to the youth shoot at Sanford

David, I don't think anyone who has read your posts thought you were being critical of the PGCA or its BOD. You're a very kind and decent man and wouldn't do that.
Best, Dean

Heard through the grapevine that the L C Smith team swept the events this year. Congratulations to them!

I will post the detailed results as soon as Backwoods gets them to me. It is not pretty ,but when you realize that there were 19 Elsie hammergun shooters vs 6 Parker hammergun shooters and they beat us 125 to 104 you will understand why. Elsie turned out in force and Parker did not. It was a great event with temps in the high 70's to low 80's , low humidity and sunny skies. The overall number of shooters was about the same as 2015 . There were two small gage courses, two large gage , fab 5 stand, practice 5 stand, trap. I think there were four vendors but this is mostly a shooters venue.

The targets on the Challenge were the hardest I have seen Rick set! I was really glad I was on the sideline drinking a cold one.
