Still a little hot down here but decided to get out and see how some of my hunting areas are shaping up. Great day with my hunting partner driving around south of Tucson. Took our bows along in case we found a nice buck. Didn't find any good bucks but did find a few creatures.

Probably answers the question of why so many gunstocks from the Southwest got broken. Kinda reminds me of the cave woman in the comic strip B.C. always clubbing that snake.

Phil,
Just got back from two days of reviewing Mearns Country around Patagonia. Lots of moisture, almost all draws had water and grass is highest I've seen in quite awhile. Saw several small coveys of Mearns, lots of Coues Deer and Border Patrol Agents everywhere.
But met several very unfriendly rattlesnakes and general they were in bad moods.
I think the state Fish and Game is right and we are going to have another below average bird count. However my scouting trips for desert quail have been very encouraging.

I have been out a few times. Yep good grass, but I have only found a pair of Mearns and zero coveys. Zero chicks. Desert birds seem to be doing OK. Problem season opens in a month but I wont run my dogs until it gets a lot cooler. Generally I wait until December, althogh I will chase a few birds before that but due to snakes I take this retriever.

In September of 09 Lucy was bitten by a small rattler that came in to our camp while we were hunting Sage Grouse. We were 2 1/2 hours from the vet in Homedale, Idaho. This is what she looked like the next morning after the swelling went way down. Fortunately she had no permanent damage. Rattlesnakes became persona non-Grata the same as porcupines where I was hunting with dogs. We had always waited until cold weather to hunt chuckers because of the snakes. I don't have to worry any more as I don't have any dogs and don't intend to get another one.

Ratters are tough on a dog. A friend went out to his kennel last week and one of his dogs had a huge lower lip, looking around he found a dead Gila Monster. No worse for the wear the dog was fine in a few days. We were out today and Found this one.

According to the vet in Homedale, Idaho where we took Lucy, dogs frequently die six months or more after an untreated snake bite due to progressive organ damage. We had him do an anti-venom shot it was expensive but we considered it cheap insurance. He also told us about a vaccination that can been given dogs in snake areas that helps if they are bitten. He said he never had a dog die that had been vaccinated, and he treats a lot of snake bit dogs.

Off the couch again today. Not a Parker but a 32" LC Smith 20 gauge.
I have wanted to take a Band-tailed pigeon and have it mounted and I was fortunate to take one today.
