Hey John - Thanks for setting up this new page, it's just in time!

Many of our friends here on the Forum have seen pictures and read my bragging about our "Grace" (Coronation's Olga's Grace) and she just had her third birthday on June 5th. We bought her from Legh and Jenn Higgins, owners of Coronation Kennels and of the Twombly line of English setters started in 1925 by Legh's grandfather Earl Twombly. Read about the history of the Twombly line on their website.

Little does she know that she is the subject of an "arranged marriage" to Coronation's Burdock - a very handsome orange belton and a very eligible bachelor. (not to say he hasn't previously savored the flower)

Grace will be coming into "season" in a month or so and Kathy and I will be driving to Vermont to 'give her hand' in the nuptials. Puppies should be arriving in late September or October, if all goes as planned.

Here is a link to Coronation Kennels website announcement. Please browse around on their website and enjoy the pictures and stories.

Legh is a PGCA Member and I must say, Kathy and I are very lucky to have met Legh and Jenn. We have become dear friends in the four years or so that we have known them.

Dean, she must have some great bird seasons under her by now, congratulations!! Have you hunted Maine or Vermont with her, or both?

Grace certainly is a beautiful dog. I have watched her run around at Hausmann's, and she moves like water flowing downhill--smoooth! Unfortunately, you may lose her for the early bird season with her having a litter in late Sept. My little girl Fancy is due July 8th and is really showing. I will have time to find homes for the puppies and get her back in shape before I take off for the UP in late October. I will keep a female pup for myself and 4 more have been spoken for.

Thanks Steve - I have hunted her exclusively in Vermont so far.

I know there are some great ruffed grouse and woodcock areas in other states but I have spent sixty-plus years familiarizing myself with the best covers in my section of the Northeast Kingdom and at nearly seventy I don't really see the benefit of scouting other states.
If all goes as planned, Grace and I should wind down at around the same time. If I don't make it to the goal my grandson Cam will take her 'til she can't hunt anymore.... Was it Shakespeare who penned the words "The best laid plans of mice and men oft gang awry."?

I certainly hope nothing goes awry in the case of Grace and me.

I should have listened more closely to my dear departed Mother. She was extremely well-read and I'm quite certain she must have told me who authored those words.

Thanks Rick!

Well finally and at long last Grace started her heat cycle yesterday afternoon. She seems to go about eight months between cycles.
So it's off to Vermont real soon to be introduced to her betrothed "Burdock" for a conjugal visit... Then sixty-one days later we should be blessed with a bunch o' puppies.

Wish us luck that all goes as planned.

Ah, puppies. A lot of work, a lot of fun and every one of them will tug at your heart. Good luck, it's tough to let them go or are you gonna keep them all?

This will be our first breeding, never done it before but we have an excellent coaching team in Legh and his wife Jenn. They're professionals and have not only followed in the footsteps of the legacy of breeding the Twombly line (since 1925) but have been innovative in raising these fine dogs and their many, many litters of pups. I know I can call on them whenever I have a question.
We won't be keeping any pups but Legh and Jenn as owners of the stud, Coronation's Burdock, will have their pick of the litter.

I mentioned in another thread that we kept our litter of GSP's close. (family / friends) Although that was nice for us and all (we were young); I have to admit, in retrospect that wasn't the best decision we could have made for the pups. We would have done better by our litter by placing them in established hunting homes or one's that would meet the dogs activity requirements, as demonstrated previously. We wouldn't do that again..something to keep in mind.

Good luck with the breeding - a big pile of baby bird-dogs running about is a whole lot of fun.

Dean

You better just hold on to the too tight vest and keep'er buttoned up. At least one of those pups is going to attach firmly right to your heart.
