Opinions wanted on taking an Ithaca Super 10 from 2 7/8" to 3 1/2."
I know the Supers are rarer than the 3 1/2" magnums, but it is what I want to use. Do you think Ithaca beefed up the guns when they went to extended chambers in 1932 (I believe that was the year)?
Thanks for the input.

Ithaca 10 GA 3 1/2" Magnums weigh in between 10 1/2 and 12 lbs. Compare that weight with your gun's. That's the level of beefing done.

According to Walt Snyder's book, they did beef up the gun for the magnums.

They are heavy and i would think you should not have too much trouble physically lengthening the chamber from a wall thickness standpoint.
The magnum tens had a through lug on the barrels which was supposed to have made the difference in it holding up to the heavier loads. The earlier Super tens did not.

Please please please:shock:
Do not modify a super ten.
If you want a 3 1/2 inch magnum NID there are several for sale on the various sites now
There are many who would give an unaltered ( chamber and chokes) Ithaca super ten a loving home and a chance to do what it was designed for

Ithaca Gun Co. warned against it at the time.

I wouldn't do it. Ithaca's NID Magnum-frame is longer, has a larger diameter hinge pin, and the barrel lug extends through the bottom of the frame.

Thank you Gentlemen for your replies. I truly did not know if they modified the frame from 1926 with the Supers to the 3 1/2 inchers.
That is what is so good about this site, ask a question and one get the information needed to make an informed decision.

In my experience, a standard under 500,000 Ithaca ten, bored out to 3 1/2" is almost impossible to sell. No one wants a whored up magnum.

one thing about 3 1/2 inch doubles the frame is larger and very bulky to me where as a 2 7/8 gun handles a lot better than the magnum guns...but i to like the magnum 10 i ve wanted a ithaca 10 for a long time but always out of my pocketbook....i have a old parker gun with twist barrels that has 3 1/2 inch chambersprobly not factory but it shoots wellgun weighs 12 lbs...i have a ithaca 3 1/2 inch automatic that shoots a lot better pattern than all my other 10 ga s..jerry i took a thick barrel stevens 12 ga and made it into 3 1/2 chambers have killed a few turkeys with it when i could walk a long ways i carried this gun...let us know if you rechambered the gun....charlie

There's a lot to be said of a Parker that looks bigger than the NID beside it but weighs more than a pound less, even with the longer barrels. I'll bet it swings a lot nicer than the NID too...
Jeff, please compare the felt recoil between the two.

I commented before that the proof reader must have been asleep to make about a comment on "The little .410 Ithaca is a winner" when the ad was for the Super 10. Out of place I think.

In the September 1929 issue of The American Rifleman they formatted that ad a bit differently --

but they still mention the "little .410." In those days it really was, with 3/10 ounce of shot in the 2-inch shell and 3/8 ounce in the 2 1/2 inch shell.

I picked up a super 10 from I guy that shot 3 1/2 in. shells out of it and said" it keeps opening up every time I shoot it", I picked it up cheep and shot 2 7/8ths shell fine with it. Shoot it the way it is and you won't want for more gun, trust me:)
