Cabelas-Herters line of shells has a Low Recoil 12 ga load at 1050 fps. Has anybody tried these? Thinking they may be a good clays load for our vintage guns--maybe even Damascus. Don't know what kind of pressure they generate. Typically, I have been shooting 7/8 oz loads with 16 gr RED DOT, and Claybuster 1078 (gray) wad thru my 12's. At $54.99/case these would be about as cheap as reloading. I don't shoot a lot of 12 ga, but my new WW Greener sidelever may change that.

Just found a post on the Upland Journal bulletin board where a gent sent some out for testing and they came in at 9200 psi. Should be nice in a couple of my sub 7 lb 12 ga's, like my Sterlingworth pin gun with the light #4 barrels

I can recommend these. The recoil is not what I would call soft but there is a difference over, say, the one ounce Fiocchis I also use. They break targets nicely.

Harold, I do not have any experience with the Herters shells since I only shoot reloads. The current load I use is:

AA case
15.5 gr. of Alliant Extra Lite
Claybuster 1078-12
7/8 oz of hard shot
Win 209 primer
Published velocity is 1200 at 8300 psi

They are soft shooting, reasonably clean, and pattern well. I am loading them for $4.65 per box including tax.

Cabela's once had a problem with pressure in it's Herter's pistol or rifle ammo, but claim to have corrected it. I have found their shotgun shells loud and to buck like a mule. I don't shoot them in my Twist or Damascus Parkers. I do like Noble Sport's 1oz and 7/8oz loads in 12 gauge and will shoot them in my 1881 Lifter with Twist barrels.

Harry where do you find Noble shells, I used to shoot their 16 ga that were very nice and light recoil but then I couldn't find them anymore.

I highly recommend the Herter's Low Recoil in 12 gauge. I shoot 4+ boxes per week and have been very pleased. They smoke clays, yet are soft on my Parkers and Repros ... and my shoulder. I wait for Cabela's to offer free shipping, then order several flats. Such a good value that it no longer makes sense to reload 2.75 inch sporting clays loads. Leaves me more time to reload short tens and 2.5 inch twelves.

Eric,

I order them from:

Gamaliel Shooting Supply
1497 Fountain Run Road
Gamaliel, Kentucky 42140
Phone: 270-457-2825
Fax: 270-457-3974

I just checked their stock and no 16's. Only 12, 20, & .410. Why don't you call them and see if they can't get them.

Seems to be a quality low recoil shotshell. I have shot about 10 flats over the last year or so. Used the 1oz. and 1 1/8 7 1/2`s for trap and sporting. Have used in my vintage SBT`s and in my 1907 GH with damascus barrels...
