Is it possible to have a set of vulcan steel barrels fitted to an 1886 era hammer gun or are they just not compatible in design?

i think you will find the lugs are not comparable

The "Editors Gun" has a set of 30" Vulcan Steel barrels. It it a hammer gun.
It is a Grade-0 with the barrel limiting hook and pin and with a Grade-4 hammer on one side and a very closely matching Grade-5 hammer on the other side.
The lug was modified considerably in order to for the barrels to the frame - so yes, it can be done...
but it will be quite expensive.

I just noticed the twist barrels have three bites (if thats what they are called) it would take some work to fit

I have never seen a Parker Bro shot gun with three bites. Am I missing something.

No, the lug has three lumps, front to rear. One is the barrel hook, the next is the limiting hook, and the last or rearmost lump is the locking lug.

It can be done.
To do it properly a check hook must be installed on the hammerless barrels and the lug modified appropriately so that a positive stop is had for the barrels.
Some just like to cut the check pin out and call it a day which would lead to too much stress on the roll joint/forend.

I might have called them bites, that would be the wrong nomenclature, it would be the lumps I was referring too.
