I am a new member and last year posted a note about this old girl. Health issues have prevented me from posting pictures but here they are. Can anyone help me identify this one and help with the value. Hospital bills are astronomical and I have to part with it but would like some solid info before I sell it. I acquired it from a gentleman in his 70's that said his fathers uncle owned it. I think it dates 1892. Thanks for any info and help you can offer. Dan

Wow, nice C grade! And with 28 and 36 inch barrels too! What gauge is it? Do you have a letter on it?

It is a 12 ga and do not have a letter. I have lots more pics if that will help. Just trying to determine value before I list it for sale. I hope it finds a home in this family.

Daniel - Nice gun which will get lots of attention, but...
You can't post this gun for sale on the forum unless you join the PGCA. Best $40 you will ever spend
That said, I suspect you are already getting Private message inquiries

I just sent my membership info off today but didn't know I could post if for sale here, I was going to list it on gunbroker. That's great news I would like it to go to a member who will take care of it. Thanks for the info!

A PGCA letter will add much interest and value to this gun. I can't wait until you offer this great gun for sale. An internet auction would not be as good a way to sell as offering it on this site.

Daniel, A PGCA letter may very well yield a lot of interesting provenance on your gun, as it was quite obviously a special order. Though that serial number is not in the 'book', there are no top lever graded hammer guns made anywhere around the time yours was made, and it clearly looks to be a two barrel set. Anytime we see barrels of that length, it is a flag to look deeper into it's past. Good luck in your recovery. I hope you are able to find a good home for the gun, but do your homework before you let it go, as it is quite valuable.

Very interesting and rare gun thanks so much for posting pictures and your desire to find it a new caretaker. Take your time and do your due diligence. Many members of the PGCA would feel very happy to own such an interesting example. Good luck with your health struggles. Craig

That's a special gun! What is the engraving on the shield below the top tang?

The gun is all there, but condition is not great cosmetically. So the gun would rate lower on a percentage scale.
The gun is looked at as what it is in the condition it is in. And, the gun also would be considered a great candidate for restoration by most.
Guns like this are just plain difficult to assign a value to since you cannot open up a book and find a value to go on.
So, i woild not expect that many are going to tell you what the gun is "worth" most will just make offers. Which doesnt help in trying to make sure you are getting a fair price.
This particular gun is a perfect example of one that every penny spent on restoration would be recouped in the end result. A great investment.

Nice gun. From the dark photos I can't tell the condition but I'm out here in the middle and disadvantaged. Because of my inexperience I can't tell if it is just dirty, beat up, or much else including the barrel steel.
Not many of these around. Here is one that has been rattling around in the truck with the bird dogs.

Thank you, it appears to be CWH

Again thank you for your comments, the gun is dirty but cared for. That being said it has been used a lot. The 28" barrels have the most use, the 36" barrels don't seem to have been used much at all.

Here are some more pictures, as best as I can tell the engraving on the shield is CWH. The gun locks up very tight with both sets of barrels. Also the 28" set was the primary set and both sets exhibit bores that are like mirrors. Thank you again for all of your help!

It appears that there is order book information available for this serial number. That information may include the identity of the original purchaser.

Immediately following your serial number, there is a large group of guns mostly consecutive numbers, that were exhibited at the 1893 World Fair. You can see this list of guns in Volume 2 of The Parker Story, chapter titled "Show Guns".

I don't want to distract from your thread. You have a very interesting gun and it deserves all the attention you and her can get.
Yes I did get a letter/ or it was sent to me when I purchased the gun. Well worth the money.
Mine #72575 is a two barrel set grade three fish tail top lever ten gauge made on a #2 frame. Both sets of barrels were ordered 28". One set lighter in weight than the other. the gun was ordered by Mr Edward Burton of Mass.
His initals are in the stock oval and the shield at the top of the grip.
She has a matching cousin ordered the same way but later on by Mr Burton. This twin is shown many times in the Parker Story and you can see EB engrave in the grip shield as is in mine.
Sir you have a very desirable gun and I hate that you have to part with her but wish you all the luck in finding her a good home and a good deal for you as well. There are a lot of great people on this forum and they will help guide you in the right direction.
All my best,
John

I think it would be very interesting to see how close Parker Bros was able to get these two sets of barrels with an 8" length variation to balance on the same frame. They would have to be very creative with taper and wall thickness to even get them close to the same balance point.

They would have to be very creative with taper and wall thickness to even get them close to the same balance point.
The shorter barrels' unstruck weight was 4, 4 and the weight of the longer barrels was 5, 7...
But I'll bet a dollar that they did.

I can't afford the gun so it does not really matter what I think. But, I would like to see it with the metal cleaned, barrels redone to match the frame and a wood doctor bring some color out of the wood. If the cherckering and side panels have use were,I'd leave the character there. See if it couldn't b made to look somewhat like Bruce's Bernard hammer up above. Or it is wonderful just as it is. Hammer guns, well if I had to sell my motor sickle or my hammer gun... ch

those 2 frame barrels seem lite for a 10 ga the first set of barrels at 4.4 they usally range around 5.6 the 2nd set of 36 inch barrels at 5.7 is really light i have a 30 inch set of barrels that go7 .14...this gun would make a good turkey gun with those long barrels....charlie
