View Full Version : Parker Gun Club Patch.....
Destry L. Hoffard
11-29-2016, 04:55 PM
I'd designed this jacket patch as a go with to the shooting sweaters currently under construction. It's chainstitched on wool felt just like the old style gun club patches. I used Parker Gun Club (which actually was a real club at one time) so as not to get into any copyright infringement or problems with the PGCA.
This is a prototype but I don't think I'd change anything. I don't have it in hand yet, it's supposedly in the mail to me as of yesterday.
The guy I contracted to do it, and produce the full order, has now said he doesn't want to do them. He doesn't have time, he's too backed up to do small projects, etc etc. It also took forever to get just this one. I think it was 10 months from initial contact to a few days ago when he sent this photograph, so I'd be a little hesitant to use him anyway.
So, as of right now, I don't have a manufacturer. If I go to the trouble to find someone else, would anybody else want one anyway? They would be expensive, around $100 each plus shipping.
The embroidery is done by machine, the machines are all 75 or 100 years old. It's oriented by hand and is quite an art to do and do right. This guy was my choice, he's the best I could find. But, there are a few others who still do it who I could give a try at a prototype and see what they're capable of. They're all in the USA so that's a plus as well.

Damn nice, very very pretty, but awful expensive. No offence but don't be a Trump. Try overseas for same quality and reduced cost.
P.s. Is the font the same type that is used on either parker guns or somewhere in the advertising?
Destry L. Hoffard
11-30-2016, 09:24 AM
If I thought I had to get them produced overseas I wouldn't bother with the project.

P.S. This is also a not for profit venture, same as with the sweaters.

I've had several messages from folks offering the names of patch manufacturers and I certainly appreciate the attempts at help.
My whole idea was to create something that wouldn't have been out of place on a shooting jacket in the 1930's. And of course have it made here in the USA.
Yes we could get them done in China on a computer oriented embroidery machine but then it would just be another patch, not something special to wear and be proud of.
I've had enough responses to warrant looking into another maker. Once I've got the prototype in hand I'll see what I can come up with.

Is she a chainstitch embroiderer? It's a pretty special skill set, not just having the machine, but having the eye to orient everything completly by hand.

Just wanted to put in my two cents and let you know that you did an excellent job. Great looking patch that appears to be period correct. Best of luck in getting your project done.

Patch came in today, it's actually 12 inches across, absolutely stunning. Wish this guy was willing to do the full order.
I've contacted two other folks who do this kind of work. No response as of yet, I'll keep everybody posted.

Guy who I had lined up to make them started doing corporate work and is now officially too busy. I've gotten a sample from another maker but it wasn't good enough quality to warrant the cost and I returned it. I need to get back on this, there are other people out there who do this.

In our current situation of enforced leisure I have done heavy research into another possible manufacturer of these and believe I have found someone. The good news is they will be cheaper! In the $65 range rather than the $100 from the first fella. The bad news is the company is currently closed down due to the pandemic. I'm in conversation with the owner and am sending out the original for them to look at and produce a prototype as soon as they reopen. I'm actually stunned I found someone else, nobody makes patches by hand this way anymore hardly. Hopefully their work is as good as the first. The minimum order will be 12 pieces to get this lower price. If we can get that many folks interested we'll move forward.

Keep 'em coming guys!
It's a big patch, about a foot across.
As far as Spinwheel Fashions goes, they do nice work obviously, but they don't do this sort of thing. The idea here was to recreate a patch that might have existed in the 1930s. Everything Spinwheel does is manufactured on computer oriented looms so a long way off that era.

Destry L. Hoffard
04-06-2020, 02:26 PM
The price is looking like it's going to be around $65 each plus shipping. I'm sending out my patch for them to look over this week directly to the head lady. They'll run a prototype for me as soon as they open the shop back up. Keep the orders coming so I can keep a count, but I'm not going to take any money till we know more when manufacturing might start.

Update: The little company who's making these has officially reopened. They've sourced the 100% wool thread I wanted and are looking into 100% wool felt for the backing. Once that's a Yay or Nay they'll run a prototype for my approval and I'll start taking money. I have also purchased shipping envelopes.

Hi Bill,
Yeah, it is an XL! Remember, Russ always said "powerfully built" when describing himself. I have a few things that were Russ's that bring back some great memories. So, it stays here for now, but I am in my 80th year, so one never knows if I will get 20 more!
Destry L. Hoffard

The sweater deal was a one time shot unfortunately. I don't believe we could get enough interest up for another production run.
Phil Yearout
05-11-2020, 07:09 PM
Destry, are these still the really large patches made to be worn on the back of a vest, sweater, etc.? I'd like one but not that large; any plans to offer smaller sizes (probably not I'd guess).
Destry L. Hoffard
05-11-2020, 09:52 PM
Yeah these are a large jacket patch. The problem with doing a smaller pocket size version is you would lose so much detail. If this all works out I might see if we can work a re-design into something smaller but that's down the road a piece.

Good news, the prototype has been run and it looks great. I'm going to officially start taking money. There will be some bookkeeping involved here and I'm going to ask you all to do your best to help me help you. If you want a patch (or multiple patches) I'm going to ask that you pay me by check or money order only (no Paypal) so I'll have an easier time keeping the money straight.
I'm not going to try to message people individually and you don't need to message me individually either. I'm going to post the address for payment right here on the thread.
Send $65 per patch (that's a shipped price) to:
Destry L. Hoffard
5150 Carpenter Rd.
Ypsilanti MI 48197
Include a clearly written example of your shipping address and a note saying how many patches you want. If you can send an actual shipping label for your package that would be a big help but that's not a requirement.
I'm going to accept payments for 30 days from Monday (June 22nd). After that date I will officially deposit all checks and money orders into my bank account then call and make the order to the manufacturer.
I will post a weekly update as to how many payments I have and give a count down as to how long you have left to pay.
Below is a picture of the prototype patch which looks fantastic.

Anxiously awaiting the delivery of the patches. And since my Parker is a family heirloom and has been passed down to me (I'm the third owner), it will soon be passed down to my son, along with the the documentation I've been able to obtain through this organization and the patch.

Destry,
Again, thank you for undertaking this project. While I know you are not a, "store" did you plan on ordering more of these patches for future members? Maybe a deal could be worked out with the, "Parker Store" for a number of these for future sales. I know I would have liked to have one of the parker sweaters that you had made for the members. I would check with the guy that is in charge of selling the caps and shirts about stocking the patches. Thanks again.

I'd had several requests from folks about a possible smaller, less expensive patch. Done in this style, old school with the chainstitch embroidery, it's just not possible.
I spoke with my manufacturer, we even looked at a design I worked up with lettering only. Even with far less details, the smallest they can get it and get any lettering sharpness would be 8.5 inches long.
I did some checking around on another old style of embroidery that would have worked for sure but had some very bad new. It looks like the last manufacturer who was running a Schiffli Swiss Loom has had their last employee who knew how to operate it retire. The call for emblems made that way is almost non-existent anymore, so rather than train somebody new, they've dropped it from their line. If there's anybody else in the US running one I can't find them. I called all the places I knew who used to and most of them didn't even know what I was talking about, it was so far gone.
That is officially the end of an era and made me kinda sad to tell the truth. Most of smaller size old time gun club patches would have been Swiss Loom manufacture, everything from this point forward will be that flat ugly computer stitch crap.

They are currently under construction, that's all I know right now. We had some fabric drama, they couldn't get the background felt all of a sudden. But they managed to source a replacement.
Destry L. Hoffard

Destry L. Hoffard
09-03-2020, 06:06 PM
P.S. There was one minor change. Due to all this Covid madness, the original 100% wool felt background material got back ordered. Rather than wait for possibly months till it became available again I had them run on a cotton / wool blend. Nobody might notice but me, just wanted to make sure I gave full disclosure.

I've got a list going for the 2nd run.
Bob Dombeck
09-04-2020, 06:10 PM
Destry, do they look as good as you expected? Would it be worth trying to get the original wool felt background material on order for a second batch? I'd be in for another one.
Destry L. Hoffard
09-04-2020, 06:50 PM
They look just like the picture, they're great.
As far as the felt goes, that was a big problem. There is no 100% wool felt produced in the USA anymore. It has to come from Europe. And with what's going on in the world right now, the suppliers can't get the stuff. The wool / cotton blend is a USA product so can be gotten a lot easier.
I'm up to nine on a second order, ten if you're in on one with the blended fabric.

Lucky duck. Put up some netting and the little devils got through it the first day. Haven't looked today as I'm watching my blood pressure. Squirrel preventative methods on line says they don't like them until they start to ripen so don't worry about the green fruit. Bullsh!t!

Funny thought: Might these become an item of barter. Imagine a "close' gun deal somewhere in the future, the guy won't quite come to center, would one of these tip the scale? Methinks it might be so in the future, limited edition, collector grade! Destry, I admire a man that takes something like this on and sees it through. Too many of this type of thing wind up as all talk and no DO. I'll be sporting one slap in the middle of the back panel on my favorite field vest. To be seen and admired by all!

Two patches? Makes sense.
One serves as a “user”, proudly worn on a vest at the range or in the field; another framed for display (but never in direct sunlight) in gun room or “man cave”.
Future generations will debate the value of the original-condition, never-worn patch, versus the one with honest wear for which there is provenance connecting it to an identifiable early 21st Century Parker gun enthusiast.

Wow, wow, and wow. Brilliant colors on the patch and a fantastic surprise to take it out of the envelope this afternoon. The specks started showing up last week on the neighbors and there are about twenty honkers flying around in the mornings. So, fall is in the air here in California and this patch shows up at the right time to get the feeling of hunting season started.
Need to get the boot room in order, guns out of the safe and on the racks, and get this patch displayed to set the mood.
Thanks very much Destry; the almonds are at the huller but have not been run yet. They will be shipped when done. Again, thanks for your efforts.

The patch and the VH20 looked far better at the end of the day than the dogs and I. We had a bunch of rain in late September and October, that grass was knee deep when Whitewing opened (early September) and now is waist high nearly everywhere and chest deep in places. Tough walking, tough for dogs to work. Badly needs a killing frost.

The lady who handles my manufacturing has been out with a dose of The Covid but she's off quarantine as of today and back to work on Monday.
Yikes! I am doing the vaccine study, so hopefully I am immune (assuming I didn't get the placebo)

My goal was something that I could hang in the gun room and also display at PGCA events. I'm quite satisfied. Thanks Destry !

You are at the back of the line, mainly because you spelled Destry's name incorrectly.

Maybe the PGCA should put a bulk order in for another 25 or so, and get Destry off the griddle.

I like Destroy better.
Today I got the perfect vest for one of my patches to go onto. It will all come together nicely.

I don't think Destry is on the griddle. He seems to handle this business very well.
