9000G press conversion

Has any one had a Mec 9000G press converted from 2 3/4" to 2 12". I am aware that Mec will do it for you but I am wondering if it can be done at home. Has anyone tried this themselves.

I will move this post back to the top again. I am a little surprised that no one has converted a mec 9000 to 2 1/2". Any info on this project would be appreciated.

If you're reloading at a low pressure, the slight raise in pressure by shooting 2 3/4" shells in a gun chambered for 2 1/2 isn't enough to worry about - IMHO. Back when our Parkers were made it was thought that chambering the gun a 1/8" shorter would help with ballistics. If it means that much to you to shoot 2 1/2" shells I'd call Mec and see what they have to say. I shoot just American made old SxS's and at the pressures I reload at, never measure chambers.

Wayne, here's maybe someone who can answer your question over on the reloading forums on www.shotgunworld.com - he's done it with a 12 and 16ga.

I have contacted Mec and the cost for converting it is roughly 65.00 plus postage. It is a bit of a pain to send it and the additional cases and wads they requested but I beleave this may be the way to go. By the way if your hand slips off the handle on the down stroke and you are leaning over the press it will give you a good wack on the jaw.

Sounds like they are just going to adjust it by moving the holes to line up differently and try a few shells. Maybe you could try this yourself - just mark where you started.

For those who may be interested it isn't necessary to send these presses back to Mec to convert to 2 1/2" shells. You can just adjust all three crimp heads down 1/4" and the press loads really nice 2 1/2" shells. It doesn't require replacing any parts.

Glad it worked out and you updated us on your success. Sometimes the plunger on the final crimp station [ not the last one ] isn't long enough - you'd run out of threads - Mec makes a long one for the 12ga. Before they offered one I'd make it by soldiering a 1/4" thick piece of round stock to the bottom of the plunger.
