Good evening Forum friends. I just won at auction this 16 Ga hammer gun. Does anyone have any information on this maker and some opinion on the quality/age of the gun? The auction described it as Ed Kettner gun, however, I was not able to find any information on an Ed Kettner on a google search. I have not received the gun yet and thus, I do not have any pics of the barrel/water table proof marks. I will post those once I have received the gun. I assume it is an early 1900s gun, given the barrels are marked nitro, with 65mm chambers. I was intrigued mostly by the oak leaf engraving style of the action and the fact the screws have not been touched. Does anyone have a gun with similar engraving or from this maker? How does it feel shooting a gun with that type or unusual horn trigger guard? Any information would be greatly appreciated. BillK

I don't see any sling swivels, typical in a lot of German guns. That would be one more plus, which I hope to confirm once I receive the gun, in keeping with the clean lines. Billk

The Kettner name is well known and highly respected in German gun collector circles. I'd suggest you contact the German Gun Collector's Assn. for more info.

Overall, a nice gun. And the horn guard is of little consequence if it's to your tastes. This one adds an effective pistol grip to the gun as well.

Eduard Kettner was not a maker, but was a retailer. They were known for selling quality. I have had a few drillings and two double rifles sold by them.

I've also owned a Kettner drilling. 16 x 16 x 9.3 x 72r. It too had the horn trigger guard. These trigger guards are quite attractive and gracefully shaped but rather thick for added strength yet are still a bit fragile and subject to insects and shrinkage. I see that yours has a few insect holes and is cracked near the screw behind the trigger bow. All this can be fixed and filled with an epoxy like Acroglas.
I really like the lines of your gun and the long 30"? barrels. Please post more pictures when the gun arrives! David.

Thank you David. You are almost correct on the length of the barrels. The auction site listed them as 29.5" long, which comes out to 75 centimeters long. Since that is a whole metric number, I believe the barrel length to be the original.

Great gun Bill. The buffalo horn guards are quite nice in the cold. Would be a favorite if it were mine.

Could you share pics of the barrels flats and what's stamped under the barrels themselves?

I have an Eduard Kettner stalking rifle in .30 US as marked. DST, tapered solid rib, folding leaf rear sights, horn PG cap. It's a lightweight rifle built on a Mauser action and sports a Greener style side safety. I've seen shotguns and drillings over the years with the Kettner name and all were very nice quality.

I have a double rifle with the exact same trigger guard on it. I am not a big fan of these type of guards. Mine positions my hand in the wrong place witch causes me to make the gun double.
