Thinking about purchasing a small speed bag.
Not sure if I want to go with a cotton canvas or an all leather bag?
50 or 100 round capacity?
What would you guys suggest?
I really like the looks of these small speed bags:

Mike,
I have always wanted a leather speed bag. I do have one in canvas and like it. Go for the 100.

Thanks Harry,
I'm kind of leaning towards a cotton canvas bag.
Not so sure I want to take an expensive all leather bag
into the fields of briar patches where I some how inevitably
end up. :crying: :)

Why are they called "speed bags" when they have a cover secured with a buckle?

I have an old english canvis and leather bag. how are they supposed to fit? the reason i ask mine has obviosly what is the original strap on it, if i wear it over my shoulder (across the chest) it ends up being about 3 inches under my armpit, it seems short to me? are speed bags supposed to be at chest level? dumb question that i dont know the answer to.....

Definitely not a dumb question at all Joe. And that is great
looking bag ye got there.
Back in the days when I used to go to the muzzle loader shoots,
one of he big topic of discussions at times was the possibles bag,
and the proper wear of it.
Some always said high just under the arm pit and others said it
should hang at arms length. :banghead:
I have no idea how the name speed bag came about.
I think it is a carry over from the muzzle loading shotgun era.
A shot gunners possibles bag if you will.
Mike :)
Great topic guys

Dean, that is a great question. The reason a "real" speed bag has a hinged lid is so it can be turned all the way back behind the bag and carried open. The gathered ends prevent spilling of shells when bending over to pick up game. That is why a speed bag has gathered ends and a shell pouch does not. You can't bend over if you carry shells in a shell bag. The speed bag strap is not buckled when in use, only when travelling from place to place. Some more intelligent speed bags have a stud and hole instead of the strap and buckle. Dean and I would probably prefer that system. Never buy a speed bag whose lid cannot be folded completely behind the bag. The maker obviously doesn't know how a speed bag is used. Some high quality bags do not have a hinge, but have a flap lid that is supple enough to fold behind the bag and stay in place. Please don't suggest velcro on a classic speed bag. I have a way too big collection of speed bags, but my favorite is a large Hulme bag that Hulme guru Chris donated to my gun club for a silent auction. Kevin McCormack double beaded the opening for me to make it the perfect bag. Chris is now considering the "double beaded" feature for production Hulme bags.

Made my decision, this is the one I ordered yesterday.

I figured I would go ahead, spend the extra money and get a good one.
The way I see it, I will only ever need one bag and it will last my lifetime
and then some.
Thanks for the great input all :)

Wow. I have to have one of those. The heavily gathered ends are the best I've seen. You should almost be able to stand on your head without spilling shells. I have no idea how big it is, I just know I need one. One of the regular vendors at double gun events, "theleatherman.net", is making, at my request, a small speed bag that is worn on the belt like a shell pouch. The advantage to this item is that we can bend over without spilling shells. I didn't check on the progress of this new item when I saw him at the Northeast Shoot. I'm sure we'll see him at the Vintagers. He makes a nice speed bag and other items.

A what? Pardon my ignorance..
1. Murse: a man's bag, can be used to hold a laptop and other man supplies, such as firearms and firearm supplies.
2. Murse: a man-purse. very fashion-forward right now, seen on many hipster guys. the line between a messenger bag and murse is very fluid - typically a murse is a bit smaller than a traditional messenger, and may have a slightly more stylized look to it. a murse can also be used to carry a laptop computer - one of the reasons it is so popular right now

I've actually used a speed bag shooting driven birds. They're great but always make sure you get one with a top opening big enough to easily fit your hand all the way inside without too much effort. First one I had, before I knew what to buy, had a smaller opening and my big mits didn't want to go in it easy. When you're loading quick on a drive or in a hot dove field you want to be able to get down in there with some speed hence the name......

Another feature of speed bags is that when you give them a good shake up and down, the shells will tend to orient themselves with the shot load down and thereby making it easier and "speedier" to grasp two shells at once by their rims which are then oriented pointing up. Give it a try, it really does work.

Yeah, if we can go to the moon, we ought to be able to design a bag with shells ready to insert, brass up.

Although I collect speed bags (as well as shell pouches), I feel a bit like my friends Dave and Rich. A speed bag is a bit too much like a purse to use in certain circumstances. I'm up to about 1 or 2 days a year with mine.

Harry, that's about the perfect "speed bag" for the gun who finds himself without his loader at the butts, eh whot?
Harry Collins

Dean,
What! What! One should never be without a loader.
In "The English Gentleman" by Douglas Sutherland a young fellow pointed out that a gentleman's watch had stopped. The gentleman said, "Impossible! My man winds it each day before he puts it on my wrist."
Another young man was getting married and a future Uncle asked "How's your pheasant?" "I have none". As the older man stomped off he said "Obviously not feeding them properly".

Yeah! but remember that purse is full of shotgun shells. And that
put's it into a league unto itself :)
And there's that "something just looks right" about a fine double gun
and a fine leather or canvase bag together.

May I suggest when buying a speed bag make sure the opening is big enough so your hand goes in without chaffing your knuckles. Mine does annoy my knuckles.
The purse thing has no credit on a trap range when you must shoot fifty rounds per station. The fifty round thing happened at the Grand a few years back and the speed bag came into play and worked out nicely.

i seen a movie of JOHN WAYNE a while back he was hunting with a hammer gun and what looked like a speed bag made of leather. then again it could have been a game bag. i have often used and old purse as a shell bag and a game bag.did the speed bag serve as only a shell holder or was it also used to put game in.... charlie

Nah, they're just for cartridges really. Across the water they have actual shoulder carried game bags they use in conjunction with speed bags. I always intended to buy one when I was over there as they'd be a great sack for the duck blind during early season but I never got it done.

Harry, what is the web area designed to hold? I wouldn't be putting any buuds in there unless they were bagged in zip lock first. I have a small collection of bird hangers but never use them. My Mills bird belt has hangers, but I've never used those either.

McLintock! is the name of that movie, my favorite of John Wayne's. I think he does put the bird in the bag.

On hot days the buuuds go in the netting so they won' spoil in the bag. At least that is how I us it.

I'm sorry, Dean, I misspelled buuuds. The proper spelling, as Harry posts, is "buuuds", not buuds. They are the little things with feathers that we pursue with our "buuud guns".

Speed bag arrived today. :)
Needless to say, this puppy is built to last a “very” long time.
Looks like it will hold about 100 rounds.
And yes my big paw fits inside the bag. :bigbye:
