But Jim just sent me this one of us spring steelhead fishing on the AuSable and I thought I'd share it anyway:

That's a pretty one Destry. Do you get out for steelhead much?

Yeah, Destry, that is a pretty hat. The fish is nice too. OK, where did the hat come from and will it replace the Jones?

I had one twice that size on but got in a hurry and lost it.
I'm a flat water fisherman, fighting them in moving current is something I'm just not good at apparently.

Dean,
We usually go a couple times a year, once early spring on the AuSable and then later trolling on the big lake over in Ontario.
Bill,
That's another old favorite hat, though not nearly the age of "The Jones". It's a duckbill Filson I've had for 10 years or so, just getting broken in good actually. Nothing will ever replace "The Jones" my friend, you should know better. This one is strickly my fishing and occasional trapshooting hat. Roger hates it too.
Richard,
I coulda used it on that big one, the damn thing rolled right in front of the boat just before it got off. It was like a whale rolled there, it set up that much of a wake. What do you think a good load for big trout would be? If I'd have had the old 10 gauge loaded with about 2 ounces of #4......

Destry;
The next time you have a steelhead roll or jump, just drop your rod tip so there is no tension on the line. I know this sounds wrong but was taught this stunt fishing for Atlantic Salmon and it works.

I agree with Roger Destry... drop your rod tip, but I would add that when you do this it's only so you can SHOOT! 2oz of #4's sounds like a great load for the application...
