I have been reloading a recipe from the Lyman book for 28a winchester AA hulls. I did some patterning yesterday and this load was by far the best out of my AYA choked skeet 1 and skeet 2 of the variety of shells I tried with #8 shot

My only concern is that this is a pretty light load at 1146fps with 8,300 psi.

Does that extra 54 fps do much in terms of knockdown power and decreased need for lead in factory shells? After reviewing my patterning yesterday I felt certain that I would use these reloads exclusively on grouse and woodcock this fall, I can break clays with them very consistently, but I want to be sure I am not going to be crippling birds with them.

The recipe is as follows:

11.5 grs Unique powder
win 209 primer
waa28hs wad (I'm using the clay buster version)
Win AA HS hull

That load is perfectly lethal for the birds you plan to hunt with it.

I wouldn't shoot anything bigger and hardier though.

I shoot grouse and woodcock with a similar 28 ga. Load and if you do your part that ammo will never be a problem within reasonable range.

You are good to go. I use a very similar load for my 28's as well. A properly hit Grouse or Wood cock will never know the difference in 54fps.

RST loads ammo as low as 1125 fps , I shoot trap with 1150 fps loads. You will often see very good patterns out of low velocity loads. Plus they are very easy on the old guns we shoot.

50 fps difference muzzle whole lot less difference at distance. So little it's not important. I think Bristows book has a chart, will look

I do have to say, it is amazing how much nicer of a pattern this reload threw compared to factory AA target loads. My tubes are skeet1/skeet2

If you think you need more umph uses a larger size shot. speed may kill but brute force does it quicker.
