View Full Version : MERCURY MAGNUM...

while not quite what one would describe as a fine double, this Spanish/Eibar double packs a punch. It is unlike all the others "Mercury" magnums I have ever seen as the checkering is very fine, the walnut is nice, cheeks are pointed and refined unlike the circular ones on others, and the receiver is nicely case colored. But in a 10 gauge with thirty-two inch barrels it will reach out there. The barrels are marked "half-full" and full, unlike all the others I have seen (full-full). It must have been a very early production as they even spelled Mercury "Mercuri."

Anyway, I had never shot at a turkey with it so I wanted to break it in having owned it twenty-five years. The distance was a good forty steps, as I sit in the open against a tree turkey hunting, I don't give them the opportunity to spot me if I can help it. It took an hour and a half to call this bird in. Believe me, this gun is hard to hold up as it is so heavy on the front end. Third and last one for the year! Sorry about the obnoxious breathing in the video; I will soon learn to take the caller out of my mouth after the turkey is dead.

Nice job! You really got my blood pumping with that one!

Just a week and a half for me... if I can wait that long... I hope I can wait that long :crying:

Dean,

I was almost asleep but when the two birds quit gobbling (twelve days of hunting will do that), I knew what was probably up. There was another behind the first. Good luck with your flocks and hopefully they will have broken up so they will come to your calling. We are in the "rut" of turkey hunting over the weekend and this week, and you are just starting.

I would love one year after I retire to follow the turkey "rut" from the deep South on up to the North as it progresses.

You should do that. There are passionate woodcock men who travel with the autumn migrations and there are grouse men who follow the season from north to south.

Follow your passion at least once after you retire.

Thanks for sharing Jerry. Calling turkeys can really get addicting. That bird sure has some great Spurs. I just came back from New Mexico and harvested 2 young birds and he Spurs were not much bigger then the size of a black bean. Congratulations on some great birds this year.

Phil,

It is an addiction; the more they outsmart you the more you want to go back the next morning. It is as if you would give up the rest of the day just to be back immediately to the next day to go after them.

Jerry The only thing that gets my heart racing like the call of a gobbler in the morning, is a bull elk bugling in rut during the Septrmber archery hunt.
