Was there a G A Hopper gunshop in Paterson NJ years ago ?

I have a UMC Co "Magic" 10 gauge shell with "G.A. Hopper - Paterson NJ" on the over shot card .

Was wondering if this were for a dealer or this person had ordered his shells with his name etc .

Garry Hopper was a shooter around the turn of the century, but he also ran a gun and ammunition store in Paterson.

Many hulls were sold as NPEs only and loaded by numerous sporting outlets. Selby Smelting was a large scale purchaser of NPEs from various manufacturers. I have a small sub-division of Selby 10 bore shells in my collection.

MAGIC was the UMC new primed empty (NPE) that they sold as the equivalent of their ARROW shell loaded with bulk smokeless powder.

Back in The Golden Age, 100 to 140 years ago, there were lots of small loading outfits all over the country supplying shotgun shells to their local market.

Winchester head-stamped their NPEs 1901 --

while their factory loaded shells were head-stamped WINCHESTER.
