View Full Version : Gunsmith you have used for a Parker and did work you liked
Robin Lewis

Over the years I have been fortunate to be introduced to gunsmiths that did quality work. Earlier in life, I have used gunsmiths that were not so good an did more damage that good.
Only after I became involved with the PGCA and exchanged information about my needs and the experiences of others did I begin to find those special gunsmiths that do high quality work. It would be nice if we could find that kind of advice all in one place.
Everyone is looking for a competent gunsmith to do work on quality doubles and I think we could do a service to everyone if we built up a list to reference quality gunsmiths here on the this forum.
I know this could be a thread that will degrade into an argumentative debate on the good and the bad, so I would like to establish some rules to help avoid that from happening. I want to focus only on the good!
1) Post a name and contact information only for people you have had direct experience with their work.
2) If they specialize in a particular area, list that too.... stocks, barrels, restoration, triggers...etc.
3) Post only positive experiences, list only someone who you would personally recommend.
4) If someone listed a gunsmith you were about to post to this thread, don't list them a second time. Rather, use the "thank you" thumbs up button to register that you concur that you would recommend him. That will result in us knowing how widely used he is and how highly he is regarded. This could be the most important part of this thread
5) If you have used someone and didn't find him qualified, bite your tong and do nothing. A gunsmith can't please everyone and you may be one of a few that had a bad experience. If on the other hand, if he isn't good, the "thank you" acknowledgments from others will be low to indicate that.
6) Make only one gunsmith to a post.
7) If you want to expand on someone's previous posting in regard to an area a gunsmith specializes in, enter them again following the rules stated above.

Could you make it a rule that there is only one gunsmith to a post?
I could endorse one of Edgars four (4) recommendations but I don't know two of them and one is a duplicate of yours.

I have personally used Mike Orlen's services on five different occasions, twice for choke alterations, once for chamber lengthening and twice for stock bending. Every interaction has been satisfactory - with a very fast turnaround time. Every gun I have shipped to him has been returned by the eighth day after sending, it's a 4 day ride out there via UPS and a 3 day ride back; which of course, tells me he has done the work and shipped the gun out within 24 hours of receipt.
There are several very good gunsmiths scattered around the country that many of us entrust our precious doubles with that do quality work, but it's hard to find a gunsmith doing quality work with a quicker turnaround.
Here's a link to his services offered, price list and feedback in a thread he started on SGW:

I was referred to Mike by a good friend, Ed Vena. Mike installed screw in chokes on Ed's Ugatecha (Not sure I spelled it right) his 'Uggi" as Ed calls it. Anyway, Ed was very pleased with the work that Mike did and strongly recommended him. Mike has also done some excellent for various members of the Vintagers organization.

FWIW, Mike O completely reworked the breech area of my HE Superfox and solved ejector, rib extension alignment, extractor rim recutting, and locking bolt issues after a real nightmare, the botched welding job done by a precious owner.

Brian Dudley just finished a set of Super Fox barrels for me and the work is spectacular. The ribs were stripped re-layed, about 8 dents removed, polished and re-blued, the barrels flats finished with the proper polish and file marks. Brian was very sensitive and did not over-polish the original barrel wedge engraving during the re-finish. I added finish to the stock, did a Silvers leather faced recoil pad and Brian lightly re-cut the checkering. It is the middle gun below. I normally don't do project guns but the Super Fox is a CE one of only 22 made.

Craig,
Adding a 0 to that 8 for the number of dents is more realistic. Those things looks like they were dragged behind a truck, more than once. Literally they had at least 2 to 2-1/2 dozen dents in the tubes.

Ok I agree the barrels were a MESS!!! It looks like it just left the factory now thanks to your efforts. I shot this gun a few weeks back in northern NY and killed a mallard dead in the air at 45 yards plus so they do work!!!
The stock on the gun was cleaned but not sanded. I used timberlux walnut stain to bring back the color. I would highly recommend the product if you need to darken wood.

Noted posts about gunsmiths in WA state for SxS. I recently obtained a stock from Brian Dudley and had Brubaker Arms Manufacturing fit the stock to a 12ga, GH. He is located at 15592 Cottonwood Canyon Rd., Yakima, WA 98909, (912) 659-4505. His stock work is outstanding, a friend from Ellensburg, WA has had him do 2 or 3 English "Best Guns" and is also happy with his work.

I have used several of the gents listed on this blog, all have done great work for me! They are very busy with usually a back log of work, The backlog does not take away from the quality of the work! I had a special gun that I wanted to have put together, I knew that most could not work the project I had in mind into their busy schedules, Chris Dawe said he would take the project on, He and others under his direction worked on this project for two years, There were a lot of hurdles Chris took the time to make my dream come true, and for that I thank him, I can not get a photo to load, maybe Edgar has one he can show with the beautiful case he made for it Gary

The man is a genius with firearms of all kinds. When he was younger he lived in CT and learned to engrave guns early on. When he was still in high school he would stop by the Colt plant and take some guns home to engrave for them. His engraved guns are highly sought after. His shop is now in East Sandwich, MA.

It is a 1927 parker VH
I have an issue that when its very cold out the left barrel doesn't strike the primer hard enough to fire. When it is warm i don't have the issue. I just would like it cleaned on the internals. Possibly the engraving touched up. Make sure the barrel wall is in spec. Possibly case hardened if needed. The only thing I am dead set on is it functioning 100%.

This may not be as "in the area" as you would like but Gunter Pfrommer is probably 2.5 to 3 hours drive time depending and the mechanics issues he could easily address. He would not do the colors in house if you decide to go that route. Maybe someone will know of something closer for you. You can google Pfrommer Gunworks and find him. Good Luck !

I've seen Chris' full wood replacements, checkering, and repairs, and they are second to none. I can also say he is a Master in metal work! I set standards and expectations of my own work to those of his. I hope someday to be as good as Chris. I met and became friends with Chris, through Phil Carr a few years ago when he brought him to Arizona to shoot birds with us. I will say Chris is a true gentleman and a man of his word. Oh yeah Danny Patton and Breck Gorman are in the Parker members registry I believe . If you can’t reach Patton you can always call the shop at Purcell’s and he can probably be rounded up .

That’s great to know about Purcell’s. Last I spoke to Danny, he was out of the stock repair business. Years ago, he repaired a Perazzi stock for me that had snapped literally in-half at the wrist as a result of a double discharge. It was ugly, real ugly. Danny’s repair work was noting short of miraculous. It was nearly impossible to see the repair. Fine gent to deal with as well.

Brad did a complete restoration on my 1885 Parker Hammer Gun before his untimely passing . The folks at his shop are top notch. Brad told me that his restoration made my gun a museum quality piece!
You can check out his artisan master work by searching my name on this site.

Charlie is primarily a British Shotgun vendor. Selling British shotguns is his primary business. He is a great resource over the phone to discuss problems with. He has helped my brother with a cocking problems on an LC Smith. He knows and understands old SxS.

I met Bill Schwarz of Ellijay, GA this past Tuesday. I took my grandfather's GH Hammerless side by side to him for assment of condition and to see if there was anything that needed fixing or tweaking. I found Bill to be friendly, and a very knowledgeable gunsmith.

On Oct 30, 2020 I left my Parker with Bill Schwarz for some minor work to be done and a complete dissassembly and cleaning. I got a call from Bill Monday July 6th letting me know the gun was ready for pickup. Since I am about 8 hours away, and I had a friend working in his area this week, my friend volunteered to pick it up for me. My friend reported to me that the gun looks and feels fantastic. Unfortunitely my friend won't be back home with the gun until the end of next week. Can't wait to get it back.

She went off one day

Patton was at the shop Friday talking to me . He’s been kinda secluded since the pandemic . I think he still does some work for select clientele , he also does for us from time to time .

Harry try searching this thread for VT or Vermont. I think you'll get a hit or two. Best...

New England Custom Gun, in Claremont, NH, is not far over the Vermont-New Hampshire state-line.
I have never used it, but have only heard good things about the outfit.

I have a parker that needs tightening up. Who best in the new england area. I live in Massachusetts, also known as Taxachusetts. Don't want to travel too far and prefer not to ship.

Have not. Doubt he has any roll joints or other parts. Dan's work is exceptional and he commands a price commensurate. I use him sparingly.
I'll touch base with Dan and see

Excellent, more time in his shop for my work. Don't listen to this guy, Lou is excellent.

Bill Graham in NC is getting into the gunsmith business full time now. He refinished some barrels for me and did a great job. He has done a lot of work for some Lefever friends who swear by him.
