The Spring Classic is right around the corner – April 21, 22, 23 and 24, 2016, at Deep River Sporting Clays and Shooting School. Here are some special events not to be missed:
•A Slide Action event has been added for Thursday, April 21, from noon to 3 p.m. It will be 60 targets over 10 stations. The entry fee is $50. To register call 919-774-7080.
•Event registration will take place in the Clubhouse (rather than the Pro Shop) and will be done using computers (shudder). Seriously, we hope to streamline the registration and scoring process, but coul;d use your help by registering in advance. Even if you just sign up for one event, we can get your name and address into the database.
•Saturday’s Pig Pickin’ will be catered by Allen & Son Barbeque. After a long absence, local restauranteur Jimmy Stubbs of Allen & Son will be catering our Pig Pickin’ promising to make it the best ever. Still only $20. Dinner tickets can be purchased on site any time up to the 5 p.m. serving time April 23.
•Blue Grass music will continue to be celebrated on Saturday, this year before dinner. Don’t miss Alice Zincone and her band in the tents from 3 p.m. on.

Mill, are there any restrictions on pump guns? Are plastic Benelli Novas OK?

The slide action event is not my department, so I am not sure. I doubt there are any restrictions on that event, though.

George,
We do have a block of rooms reserved for our members. We will once again be staying at the Hampton Inn on South Horner Blvd. in Sanford NC. The phone number for the Hampton is 919-775-2000. The rate will be the same as last year at $94.00/ night. When making your reservation just mention you want the PGCA rate. Larry

We are altering the Parker Smith Challenge a little this year. There will be two courses, as in years past, but one will be a 25 target practice range and the other will be the 50 bird qualifying round. This change was in response to requests for a practice range. More details will follow. To make it work, we are starting a little bit earlier Friday. Stay tuned for more info.

We are planning an informal social/meet and greet after the Smith Parker Shootoff on Saturday. Many of us attend that know each other online, but not in person. We will have name tags and possibly some light refreshments. I hope all PGCA members who attend will take a moment to come over and participate. It will be great to put some names with faces.:bigbye:

Gary,
We are checking to see if we can add more rooms to the block and will let you know what they say. Unfortunately once the announcement is made anyone including non PGCA members can call and book at our rate so it's important to book your room right away.
There are a limited number of rooms in Baltimore and the cut off date for PGCA special pricing is coming up in a couple of weeks. Anyone planning to attend that show and PGCA Annual Meeting/Banquet should book their room for that event right away as well.

Let us know what you can figure out Larry.

Brian,
That line has been busy for two days so they either have a phone problem or it's off the hook. I made several calls this morning (India I think):crying: to try to increase or room block but their group sales office is closed for the Holiday so I won't get an answer until Monday or Tuesday. If I were you I would book at the Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn to make sure you have a place to stay and if we can arrange for more rooms at the Hampton you can always change your reservation if you choose.

Which is the best alternative Comfort or the Holiday, The online people said no rooms available in that time slot at the Hampton, they must be having a KKK rally there or some such mess do not understand why the phones do not work! gary

I booked at the comfort. Their rates are better than the holiday inn. Normal rate was like $130 and AAA is $118.
The holiday inn was around $150 or $160.

Well I finally got through to the hampton Inn and believe or not made my reservations 4-21/4-24 for the southern and got a conformation number, I do not know if they blocked more rooms or what but you might get lucky as I did, Gary

Gary,
After reading your post I tried again and got thru as well. It seems a car took down a pole last Thursday and all three hotels on that block were without phones. I found out that we have eight rooms left in our block at $94.00 and I was able to add 10 more but at a rate of $104.00. The hotel is almost completely full so anyone wanting to stay at the Hampton should call asap. There is a cut-off date at which time they will release any unsold rooms and I will post that date on Tuesday after I speak to the manager.

Thirteenth Annual L.C. Smith vs. Parker Challenge Cup
April 22-23, 2016
COMPETITOR QUALIFICATION
1. Competition is open to all members in good standing of the Association they represent (either LCSCA, or PGCA). Membership rosters will be on hand to confirm existing memberships; and Membership applications for both Associations will be available at Registration for those individuals wishing to join and participate in the competition.
2. Members holding joint memberships both the LCSCA and PGCA must choose ONE Association to represent in the competition; and will do so at the time of registration. The Event One qualifying scores of anyone registering and shooting for both Organizations will be disqualified.
3. Challenge Event entrants are not required to actually own a shotgun of the make related to the Association they may be representing; but are required to SHOOT with a double gun manufactured by the maker of the Association they represent. Therefore, guns may be borrowed for use in the Challenge Event; and arrangements for a loaner gun made at the registration table (see Equipment rules below).
4. Adult professional shooters (men and women), or an adult receiving sponsorship/s in any form from dealers, industry, or any other organization/s are not allowed to compete in this event. An adult is defined as anyone aged 18 years or older.
GUNS & EQUIPMENT
1. Shooters must use a vintage double shotgun manufactured by the gun maker their Organization represents. Those shooting LC Smith guns and representing the LCSCA are limited to LC Smith guns manufactured in Syracuse and Fulton, NY; and those manufactured under Marlin Firearms ownership in New Haven, CT. Those shooting Parker Bros. or Parker labeled guns and representing the PGCA are limited to Parker guns manufactured in Meriden, CT and Ilion, NY.
2. Participants may use any hammer or hammerless model and grade of Smith or Parker gun produced by the above named original gun companies. Reproductions or modern/imported guns marketed under these famous trade names are not allowed for use in this event.
3. Any gauge/bore size in which the Smith and Parker gun was originally manufactured may be used in the Challenge Event.
4. Modified and restored guns are allowed, including those with stock replacements or alterations, recoil pads, shortened or lined barrels, mono-blocked or sleeved barrels, screw-in chokes, etc. Guns used with relined barrels must be equipped with barrel liners of the same gauge in which the gun was originally shipped if the barrels of that gun, when manufactured, had been “fluid” steel.
5. Chamber inserts or chamber-size reducers (Chamber-Mates and similar devices), and full-length barrel inserts with gauge reducers are acceptable only for use in guns originally manufactured and fitted with Twist or Damascus steel barrels.
6. Shooters using guns equipped with screw-in chokes can do so, but may not change choke tubes once competition has commenced to include the initial Event One qualifier.
7. The wearing of Eye and Ear protection is required of all competitors; and all ammunition must be loaded with size 7 1/2 shot or smaller in order that the Event be in conformance with the Deep River Sporting Clays liability insurance requirements.
Event One Qualifier
1. Registration will take place inside the LCSCA/PGCA Exhibition Tent just above the “Dove Field” where will be provided a SINGLE registration table manned by a representative from each Organization. Time will be a limiting factor for this Event, therefore LCSCA and PGCA members will shoot in mixed squads to avoid losing valuable shooting slots; and the Organization represented by each participant will be noted on the registration form.
2. The Event One qualifier for each participant will consist of 50 targets to be fired on the Event designated 5-stand layout/field. Registration will begin promptly at 8:00 AM Friday morning, April 22; and shall continue until approximately 12:00 Noon on Saturday, April 23. EARLY REGISTRATION is a MUST HAVE requirement in order to keep the Event One qualifying process moving in a timely and orderly manner, as time constraints will limit available shooter slots to approximately 125 total. It is therefore IMPERATIVE that participants register early and not risk losing the ability to participate.
3. An Event One Entry fee of $10 will be collected at the time of registration and Membership verification; and all Event One participants will receive a custom designed pin to memorialize forever their participation in the 2016 LC Smith vs. Parker Challenge Event. All Challenge entry fees will be donated to a charitable cause selected by the management of Deep River Sporting Clays in appreciation of their willingness, and graciousness in hosting the Challenge Event.
4. Each participant of the Challenge Event will be responsible for his/her own Target fees of $25.00 for the 50-target Event One qualifier; and said fees can be paid directly to the 5-stand vendor/operator at theDove Field shooting venue (or, if preferred, 5-stand tickets may also be purchased in advance at the Deep River Club House). However, DO NOT purchase a ticket at the Deep River Club House and go directly to the 5-stand with the expectation of registering and shooting immediately; ALL participants must be registered and squadded at the registration table inside the LCSCA/PGCA Exhibition tent.
5. With the Challenge Event One qualifier venue being changed up slightly for 2016, the Event One qualifier will begin at 9:00 AM sharp on Friday morning (4/22); and as this is a major change from years past, please make note! When participants register for Event One, they will be squadded and assigned a specific shooting time; and all shooters are encouraged to be at the Dove Field shooting venue 15-20 minutes prior to their scheduled shooting time. Again, PGCA and LCSCA members will be shooting as part of combined squads based on registration order unless other accommodation is made at time of registration; and then only if it is possible to make such accommodation.
6. New for 2016 is our 5-stand practice venue. For early Event arrivals a designated 5-stand practice venue will be open all day Thursday, April 21. The same venue will be open all day Friday, April 22, from 8:00 AM until closing; and on Saturday, April 23, until approximately 11:00 AM. Practice rounds will be available on a first-come/first-served basis; and the practice venue will consist of 25 targets. Shooter target fees will be $10 per round with those target fees paid directly to the clays vendor (or purchased at the Deep River office); but no target fees are included in the $10 Challenge Event entry fee. Shooters purchasing practice round tickets may only sign up for ONE ROUND AT A TIME, and may not place their name in rotation for another practice round until they have completed shooting their first time through the course.
7. Target presentation for the Event One qualifier will be 50 TARGETS fired on ONE 5-STAND course; and the target presentation shall be as follows: one (1) Report Pair followed by four (4) True Pairs at each of the five, 5-stand shooter stations.
8. During the 50-target Event One qualifier venue, shooters are allowed one gun malfunction with the opportunity to re-shoot any targets lost. Referees will verify any gun malfunction while the shooter maintains control of his gun with same pointed in a safe direction. Any further malfunctions will result in target/s scored as “Lost”; and the decision of the referee is final in all instances. Note: If a shooter calls pull and loses a target either because his gun was in the “On Safe” position, or he failed to cock a hammer; that over sight does not qualify as a gun malfunction; and the target/s will be scored “Lost”.
Event Two - Challenge Cup Shootout: 3:30 PM Saturday
1. At the conclusion of the Event One qualifier, representatives from the LCSCA and PGCA will select from among their team of shooters 10 Challenge Cup Team members to represent their respective Associations; and those 10 shooters will be those individuals who have earned that distinction by scoring the highest number of broken targets from the 50 target Event One qualifier. Should Event One results for either team result in a tie score for the tenth and final team position; the following tie-breaker rule will be utilized: the final team slot will be determined using the reverse long-run method (the highest number of broken targets scored from last target scored broken).
2. Participants must report to the registration tent after Event One has been completed in order to determine their status for Event Two. Final scores will be tabulated by approximately 2:30PM on Saturday, April 23; and the names of those ten (10) Challenge Team members for both Organizations will be posted to the leader board located by the entry to the Exhibition tent. Alternate Challenge Team members (those three members from each organization with the next highest Event One scores) will be asked to remain on stand-by should any one of the 10 qualified Challenge Team members be called away, or cannot be located prior to the commencement of the Challenge Cup Shootout.
3. All Challenge Team members will be provided with commemorative caps (Red for Team Parker and Green for Team LC), and will proudly wear those hats prior to, during, and after the competition for Team identification and Event related photos.
4. The Challenge Cup Shootout will begin at approximately 3:30PM Saturday afternoon; April 23; and shooters representing each Team will report to their respective Team Manager not later than 3:00 PM for squad assignments and Team strategy sessions.
5. A coin toss will determine which team will begin the initial round of the competition; and 5-man squads from each Team will then alternate taking the field thru completion of the Event.
6. The course of fire for the Challenge Shootout will consist of THIRTY (30) TARGETS for each squad member fired as follows: one Report Pair and two True Pairs at each station. Target presentations will be completely reconfigured prior to the beginning of Event Two so that the “playing field” is leveled for each Team
7. The Team winning the Challenge Cup will be the Team registering the highest number of broken targets from the combined 300 per Team target format.
8. In the event of a tie team score, the winner will be determined by a shoot-off (a shoot-off from station three between the shooters from each Team with the highest combined score in Event One and Event 2). Ties in shooter scores for the Top Gun award will be settled in the same fashion; while ties for all other individual shooter awards will be broken by using the reverse long streak rule noted above.
Awards:
Top Gun
Runner Up
3rd Place
4th Place
High Lady
2nd Place Lady
High Youth
2nd Place Youth (17 years old or younger; note: Lady and Youth shooters are also eligible to win the top
(Challenge Event awards based on individual performances)
INDIVIDUAL AWARDS DETERMINATIONS:
In the event of a tie(s), representatives from each Association will confer to determine the procedure for determination of a winner/s; but conditions permitting, the ultimate winner will be determined by a shoot-off conducted immediately following the completion of the Challenge Shootout. It will be the responsibility of each competitor to learn if he/she might be involved in a required shoot-off; and any qualifying shooter not present for said shoot-off will forfeit his claim to the contested award. Therefore, following the conclusion of the Challenge Shootout, each of the 20 competitors involved are hereby strongly encouraged to determine their scores and ranking before leaving. Should weather conditions preclude a shoot-off, ties will be resolved via the reverse long run of broken targets method beginning with the last target fired in the Shootout.
AWARDS SCHEDULE:
1. The Challenge Cup trophy, Team, and individual awards will be presented immediately after the results for Event Two become formal; and the location for the Challenge Cup and individual trophy presentations will be at the front entry to the LCSCA/PGCA Exhibition tent. The Challenge Cup trophy will be presented to the designated representative of the winning Team; and the winning Association is then responsible for engraving their Association’s name and year of win where denoted on the Cup itself. There will also be a non-traveling permanent award presented to the winning Association.
2. Individual awards will be presented to the Top Gun, 2nd place, and 3rd and 4th place shooters based on their combined scores from Event One and Event Two.
3. Awards for High Lady and Youth will be determined by their score in Event One. In the event of a tie, the tie breaker rule will be used. IF more than one individual Lady or Youth participant were to advance to Event Two, then the combined scores from both Events One and Two will be used as the award determinate.

L.C. Smith vs. Parker Hammer Gun Challenge
Sunday, April 24, 2016
SHOOTER QUALIFICATIONS
1. Competition is open to all members in good standing of the Association represented (either the LCSCA or the PGCA). Membership applications for each Association are available at the LCSCA/PGCA registration booth inside the LC Smith/Parker Exhibition tent for those individuals wishing to join either Association and participate in the competition. For existing members, membership rosters will be on hand for membership verification in conjunction with Event sign up.
2. Those individuals with dual memberships (individuals holding active memberships in both the LCSCA and PGCA) can choose to represent only ONE Association. The scores of participants registering and shooting for both associations will be disqualified; HOWEVER, a dual membership holder may compete in the Hammer Gun Challenge for a different Association than the Association which that member represented in the Challenge Cup Event.
3. Participants are not required to own a shotgun of the make related to the Collectors Association they are representing, as qualifying shotguns are typically made available by other Association members as “loaners”; and participants are welcomed to make arrangement for a borrowed Smith or Parker shotgun to use in this Event (see equipment rules below).
4. Adult professional shooters (men and women), or an adult receiving sponsorship in any form from dealers, industry, or any other organization are not allowed to compete in this event (an adult is defined as anyone aged 18 years or older).
EQUIPMENT
1. Participants are required to use only those double shotguns manufactured by the maker represented by the Collectors Association to which they belong (i.e., L.C. Smith/Hunter Arms/Marlin for LCSCA; or Parker/Remington for the PGCA).
2. Participants may use any exposed-hammer model or grade, and gauge/bore size LC Smith or Parker shotgun originally manufactured by those respective companies. Reproductions or modern/imported guns marketed under these famous trade names are prohibited for use in this Event.
3. Modified and restored guns are allowed, including guns with a stock replacement or alterations, recoil pads, shortened or lined barrels, mono-blocked or sleeved barrels, screw-in chokes, etc. Guns used with relined barrels must be equipped with barrel liners of the same gauge in which the gun was originally shipped if the barrels of that gun, when manufactured, had been “fluid” steel.
4. Chamber inserts and gauge reducers (Chamber-Mates, etc.) and/or full-length barrel inserts with gauge reducers are acceptable only for use in those L.C. Smith and Parker hammer guns that were originally manufactured and shipped with Twist or Damascus barrels.
5. Participants using guns equipped with screw-in chokes may not change choke tubes once the competition has begun.
6. Eye and ear protection are required to be worn by all shooters participating in the Event.
Hammer Gun Challenge Event
1. Registration for members from both Associations will take place inside the LCSCA/PGCA Exhibition Tent at the same registration table used for the Challenge Event sign up. LCSCA and PGCA members will shoot and qualify utilizing the same mixed-squads format used in the Challenge Event, with the name of each participant’s Association noted on the registration form at the time of sign-up. Participants will be assigned to a squad based on the order of their registration at the table; and if an individual wishes to shoot with a partner or shoot with friends or as a group, all must be registered simultaneously. Again, participants must register to represent only one Association; and squadding and registration shall commence Friday morning in conjunction with Challenge Event sign-ups. Sign-ups will continue until the beginning of the Hammer Gun Challenge Sunday morning at 8:30 AM; the final day of the Southern Side x Side Championships. Given Event time constraints, all participants are STRONGLY encouraged to register as early as possible; and sign-ups will conclude when the last squad registered has completed shooting.
2. All Hammer Gun Challenge participants will pay an entry fee of $10 at registration and verification of Membership status; with all proceeds from those entry fees retained by the Associations and equally divided between the Organizations.
3. Hammer Gun Challenge target fees are $15.00 per 30 targets and may be paid directly to the shooting venue operator at the “Dove Field”; or purchased in advance at the Deep River operations office.
4. Participants will be squadded at registration for their approximate shooting time; and the first squad will begin shooting at 8:30 AM. Participants should be at the Dove Field venue 15-30 minutes prior to their scheduled shooting time or risk an alternative time slot being unavailable should they fail to report at their appointed time.
5. Practice shooting will be available (but limited by time constraints) at the Dove Field 5-stand venue beginning all day Thursday (for early arrivals) and Friday (April 21 & 22); and until approximately 10:30 AM Saturday (April 23). Practice rounds are always available on a first-come-first served basis. Shooters may sign up for ONLY ONE PRACTICE ROUND AT A TIME, and may not place their name in rotation for another practice round until after they have completed shooting their first time through the course. Tickets for practice targets may be purchased directly from the venue operator, or purchased at the Deep River operations office; and target fees for each practice round will be $10 for 25 clays. Target fees are NOT included within the $10 Hammer Gun Challenge entry fee.
6. Course of fire for the Hammer Gun Challenge will be as follows: THIRTY (30) TARGETS fired as One (1) Report Pair and Two (2) True Pair from each station. All traps will be thoroughly re-set prior to commencement of the Hammer Gun Challenge so that the “field of play” is leveled for all participants.
7. Participants are allowed one gun malfunction during the event with the opportunity to re-shoot any targets lost. Referees will verify any malfunction while the shooter maintains control of his gun and pointed in a safe direction; all referees decisions will be final. Any further gun malfunctions will result in a target/s scored as “Lost”; and failing to cock a gun prior to calling for targets does not qualify as a malfunction.
8. The winning Hammer Gun Team will be determined by calculating, and then totaling the top 10 individual shooter scores from each Association; and the team with the highest combined total score will be declared Winner of the 2016 Hammer Gun Challenge. In the event of a tie between the LCSCA and PGCA, the scores of the 11th place shooters from each Association will be compared to determine the winning Team. Should the Teams still be tied afterwards, those scores recorded by the 12th place shooters will be compared to determine the winning Team; and so on until the tie is broken.
TIE SCORES FOR HIGH GUN AWARDS
The Hammer Challenge (TOP GUN) Award will be presented to the shooter with the highest individual score in the Hammer Gun Challenge Event based on the 30 target presentation. In the event of a tie score, and weather and time constraints permitting; a shoot-off shall be held at station three to determine the Top Gun winner. Representatives from both the LCSCA and PGCA will confer with the 5-Stand operator to determine the course of fire; and all participants are strongly encouraged to wait for tabulation of final Hammer Gun Event scores to learn if their participation may be required in a tie-breaker shoot-off. In such event that time constraints and/or weather conditions be such that a shoot-off becomes impossible, ties will be resolved via the reverse long run method; the winner being determined by the longest consecutive streak of broken targets counted from the last target fired.
Ties for the Second Place award will be resolved based on the results of a shoot-off as described above; and should a shoot-off be required, said shoot off shall also be held at station three; and conducted under the same parameters as noted above for the Top Gun award.
AWARDS SCHEDULE
1. The Hammer Gun Challenge permanent Team award, and both individual shooter awards, will be presented to the winning Association at the conclusion of the Hammer Gun Challenge Event on April 24; and shall be presented at the LCSCA/PGCA Exhibition tent.

Gary,
I found out that we have eight rooms left in our block at $94.00 and I was able to add 10 more but at a rate of $104.00. The hotel is almost completely full so anyone wanting to stay at the Hampton should call asap. There is a cut-off date at which time they will release any unsold rooms and I will post that date on Tuesday after I speak to the manager.
I wanted to give everyone a heads up that the rooms within the PGCA block will be available at the posted price until April 3rd at which time any unsold rooms will become available to the general public at the standard rate.

Mike, the BP event is scheduled for 2:30 pm on Sunday according to the register/schedule page on the Deep River Site.
Larry, I believe that the participation in the BP event has dwindled to single digit
numbers the last couple of years. I think a lot of folks just don't want to hang around that late on Sunday, but get an early start for home instead. HTH, FV.

Yup, usually the BP event is the last thing shot on Sunday. No sooner are we done shooting and the smoke is clearing , Rick is packing up his traps. As for participation, I think last year there may have been 7 or 8 guys. I just love making big booms and peering through the smoke.

Two weeks and counting... April 21-24
Spring is in the air, and that means it's time again for the 17th annual Southern Side By Side Spring Classic Championship and Exhibition. You will not want to miss the opportunity to come out and enjoy three days of shooting with side by side shotguns, visiting the over 75 vendors from all over the world that will be on hand, great food, and a lot of fun and fellowship.
There is no gate fee to enjoy the event, so bring the whole family and experience a fun filled weekend here at Deep River.
We have several new vendors joining us this year along with many of the vendors you have come to know over the years.
•SKB, skbshotguns.com, makers of fine shotguns, will be here. Deep River has been a dealer for them for over twenty years.
•Grand Slam Pheasant Hunts, South Dakota's Premier Hunting Mecca, grandslampheasanthunts.com
•Blackbern, LLC out of Virginia, 757arms.com
•Rizzini USA, rizziniusa.com
•D.C. Whitman Custom Gun Gunsmithing
•Delaney & Sons Authentic British Shooting, delaneyandsons.com
•McIntyre's Gun Service, a full service gun repair facility, from cleaning and chambering a new barrel, to custom fabrication, and using the MDS Bore Scope.
•The Stock Doctor, Custom gun stocks, restoration, refinishing, and repairs. thestockdr.com
For a full list of vendors, visit southernsidebyside.com or deepriver.net
Gates open each day at 9 a.m.

We usually have so much to shoot we get to spend no time in the vendor tents!! We'll be in the carts circling the course like an Indy race!!! Only time we slow down to rest is for "The Challenge" qualifying and shoot-off. :bigbye: We normally shoot 1400+ targets over 4 days. :-)

Thanks Mills, but for people wondering, on Wed afternoon and all day Thursday shooting at Drakes Landing will only be limited to one thing... as long as your gun is a side by side shotgun, this is all about fun not scores....:) At this warm up shoot to the Southern we welcome all, so come enjoy, there will be lunch and maybe a dinner on Thursday at Drakes. Guys if you have not shot this course, you need to, it is one of the best... And then on Friday afternoon and Sat we go to the Southern.... It doesn't get much better then that. I'm bringing this post back to the top for a couple of reasons..
The Southern is just around the corner and the only thing I see posted is the same argument about voting rights of the membership, which is very important but let's leave this subject alone until after the Southern, it's something that is not going to be decided overnight..
Now back to the Southern, a group of us shooters (any SxS is allowed) will be shooting at Drakes Landing on Wed afternoon all day Thursday and maybe Friday or Sat morning (can not miss the Challenge). It's a great time and for any shooters out there that have not shot Drakes, your are missing one great course. Also Mills, when is the 8 gauge shoot? Don't want to miss it (some people might get a little pissed at me:) )
Hope to see all at both shooting venues. It's going to be a lot of fun, we can go back to politics end of April, "Ok". Eric

I'm trying to be nice, but the last few years, No one was shooting Deep River on Thursday, most of the times it was not even setup for shooters until late Thursday afternoon. So that is how the Drakes Landing shoot started, to have a fun shoot before Deep River. Now ..... not sure why, how to say this, but now people want to split Drakes shoot, from the fun to something else, why....? And now to put a shoot in on Thursday, why, things were going fine ... Why does everything have to happen at Deep River, which is a very poor sporting clay course, the PGCA (I'll say this again) owes Bill nothing, between the LC members and Parker members we bring hundreds of people to his shoot..:cuss: Just think what would happen if we moved the challenge the same weekend to a better venue.... Ok off my soapbox last you will hear from me. Ever since I started going to the Southern (first year was 2008) I have always arrived on Thursday. I try my best to be there no later than noon or 1 pm.
Every year the five stands were always up and running with lots of shooters participating on Thursday until closing time.
It is always a great time and lots of people there and a good social gathering after the shooting.
Obviously enough shooters do this to now necessitate Rick setting up on Wednesday.
All my best and safe travels to everyone.

The 8g event was great! I had no idea that guns and shells would be supplied to anyone who wanted to shoot in it. The cost of admission was well worth the opportunity to shoot some of these great guns.

Yes a big thanks to the folks who loaned us 8 gauge guns.
Eric Eis loaned me his fabulous 8 gauge DH to shoot and it got me into the shoot off. Unfortunately I didn't get to shoot it in the shoot off and didn't win.
I am sure Mills will give a complete report.
A special thanks to Charlie Cleveland who made me up some 8 gauge loads to practice with at home. That made the difference - being able to practice swinging a fence post while discharging lead at a moving target. way different than shooting a turkey from a stool!!!!

Mills did a fantastic job running things and as team captain. Well done buddy.
Smith won the hammer gun event today by three targets. They had a clean sweep of us this weekend. They won the 16 ga event ,the 8 bore event, the challenge cup, and the hammergun event.
Despite the outcomes this was a phenomenal weekend. The collectors associations events and the southern continue to grow and get better and better every year.
Imo the success is do to the effort and tenacity of the men and women of the PGCA and LCSCA who got things going. Thank you very much!!!!!!!

I have 3 short video's of the the 8 gauge event but they are too large to post. I'll mail them to J.D and he may be able to put them up.

The shooting went on. Some people dropped out, but others kept on.

Mills, hope you are getting some much deserved rest. You looked tired and rightfully so. Thank you, and all others that helped out in the Parker tent.
George, I met Buddy Marson also, and had the pleasure of shooting with him and David Dwyer all day Thursday. Not only is he a great shot, but maybe we should nickname him " The Virginia Gentleman". It was great to meet other names familiar to those on this site such as Mike Franzen, Bruce Day, and John Truitt--watched John break 49/50 during the Parker/Smith challenge, nice shooting.
I'm lucky enoughto be able to travel to both the Southern and the Northeastern, and looking forward to seeing many of you there.

I am slowly catching up. I got halfway home and Julia called to say one of the kids spray painted himself John Deere green. Things started with a bang
