Well it started about 5:00 AM, snowing heavy, forecast for 24-36 in have to start scraping every 2-3 hrs do not have a 4 wheel drive tractor need to get one for this steep driveway, should start blowing late today and tomorrow winds 40- plus probably will blow the stuff everywhere, but it sure is pretty! At least we got back late last night from Carolina before the storm started, A little trouble but life is good, will try to get some photos for you guys later as the storm continues, thank goodness for a 20KW generator! As Steve said I feel sorry for you guys. Here in S. Michigan we have cold temps but less then a few inches of snow and a dusting coming down now. Yesterday I just moved the snowblower from the garage to the barn as it wasn't being used. Again be safe Gary and all of the others that are getting hit with this storm....

We are going to miss the brunt of the storm, expecting only 4" here in the northern panhandle of WV, but southern WV is going to get hammered big time. I had the generators out and fired them up just in case, and filled the gas cans. Going to make an apple pie tonight and plan on spending Sat with a good upland book. I have a half dozen here not read yet including That's Ruff, A Fall of Woodcock, GBE's Hunting the Blacwater-Cannan, Partridge Shorten', a Charlie Waterman book, and a few more. Hope you all ride this storm out safely.

A great weekend for reading by the fire in these parts. Here in central Maryland we expect to get hammered pretty good too. Stay safe and warm everyone...

Started snowing in West Point,Ms. around 7 this morning, quit around 11. Did not stick ( thanks be to God ) Piled firewood on the Porch yesterday. High temp. for today is 38 dropping to 26 tonight. Will spend late afternoon deer hunting from a shooting house. They should walk this afternoon. In the morning Bay my Boykin and I head to Prairie Wildlife for a tower pheasant shoot. Will shoot my RBL on the tower birds and break out
the PH for the walkup on the birds missed out of the tower. Great fun for dogs and hunters. The may be a bit nasty, but retirement is good.

With any luck the government will be shut down for awhile.

George King was a wonderful, generous, unassuming man and I always enjoyed talking with him.
I rate his "That's Ruff" among the true classics in my library - right up there with titles by Burt Spiller, H.P. Sheldon, G.B. Evans, W.H. Foster, Nash Buckingham, Corey Ford, Frank Woolner, Gene Hill and a small handfull of others.

Thanks Rick for posting that. I couldn't remember the authors name and was waiting to get home from work--the author is George King. I haven't read GBE's book because it is the last one that I haven't read, and once I read it, well there will be no more GBE, so I am kind of holding on to it .
Snow wasn't supposed to start until after 5 here, but started around 1:30, only got 2 inches so far, but maybe we will get more than was predicted.
Baked venison steak and apple pie, along with a Great Lakes porter for dinner--good comfort food during a snowstorm.

Where do I start? 18"-24" predicted snowfall, wind gusts 35-50mph+, 20 degrees. All in all, WINTER SUCKS! I'm getting too old for this crap.
Can't wait for the Southern.
Yea Murph, would love to see the Govt. shut down for 6 months, but they still get paid when they don't work. I don't!
Plenty of bourbon, wine and vittles. Only my two labs like this crap so I guess not all is lost.

We had freezing rain all night last night here in Southern Kentucky, and then the snow started at 6:00 AM today. It fell unabated on 1/4" of solid ice all day, and still continues as of now. I was very proud of our farm team here (basically my daughter and I are the team!). We have plenty of food stored up, the wine cellar is stocked, and there is plenty of good bourbon. Gas tanks are full and plenty of diesel on hand. Several good books to pick up. The dogs love it, but the horses aren't quite sure! We have two 4WD trucks and the New Holland TN-65, so we won't be confined, but man, this is a big storm here in southern Kentucky. In fact, this storm would challenge storm-ready cities like Detroit or Buffalo!
All in all, a nice time to relax in the shop with a good book and admire over few guns, while sipping a fine Kentucky bourbon.....

Just took Molly (my Walker Coon Hound) out, the snow was up to her belly, she didn't like it much. I am only a couple hundred yards from the Chesapeake Bay. Northeastwind , the erosion will likely be bad but maby it will turn to rain, who knows. Not much you can do about the weather. Carvel

Gary and everyone else living in snow country,
On a serious note, everyone stay safe, warm, and use horsepower to move wet heavy snow. To all my friends in Alaska, I wish with all my heart you were getting this snow fall instead of the east coast.
And now, for a less-serious statement:
Today the wind blew off of the ocean and we had intermittent rain with high temps around 60 degrees F. Rough stuff for here in pelosiland. But hey, everyone knows that those of us who live in the Bay area are tough hombres. We can take the rough weather!:)

Well it seems to be stopping we got 15" so far glad we have no more it is dry and blowing going to start drifting winds to pick up to 40-45 this evening and to nite, will not melt for a while next week maybe it has not been above 20 here in several days, got plenty wood whiskey , cigars and food now just to stay in place with the wind on this mountain top, that is a wood elevator I designed with a local welder free standing brings wood right to the wood box from down stairs, couple photos, Gary

What a view!! supposed to get only 4" of snow here in Wheeling, but ended up with around 10". Trying to get ahold of my brother in Ashville, NC to see how bad it is there. Actually having a great day here. Woke up early and had apple pie/ vanilla ice cream and a pot of strong coffe for breakfast. Read a few chapters in That's Ruff( what a great book), then picked up the old guitar and spent a couple hours playing mostly James Taylor. The bird feeder is overwellmed, and they just sit there a foot away while refilling the feeders, just like my setters at feeding time. The driveway is shoveled and the snow appears to be over. Hope you all have weathered the storm. What great timing to leave for Vegas ,Chuck.

Harold did you play going back to carolina? do you play any John Denver songs West Virginia? Good day to play and get lost in your thoughts if you know what I mean? I guess the song that best describes my life and my boys also is Cats in the cradle, just did not get to spend the time with my dad that I would have liked to, same for my boys very busy do not get to see them very often, think I will have them play that at my funeral! Dean, I am and I do. I have wanted to bring her to one of the shoots, but someone has to take care of the dogs. She is athletic and a very good tennis player, can out shoot most guys at basketball, and a fair wing shot also. She enjoys eating and cooking wild game. Yes, I know, I out kicked my coverage as they say.
Gary, yeah I play Carolina , a lot of John Denver, and I love Harry Chapin, but don't play any of his songs--I did see him in concert before his tragic death at a very intimate concert setting.
Snow is over here now.

Thanks Allan, we are adding on another wing on the other side 1100 sf 550 up and 550down the upper room will be a sewing room for megan and the basement part will be a wine cellar, we make around 600 bottles a year all varieties, most of the juice comes from Italy, my wifes mother being Sicilian, we named our small batch winery after her Gandolfa Cellars, we do not sell it we just give it to our friends and they like it made with spring water, some of the wines we produce; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Montepulciano, Brunello, Borolo, PinotNoir, Spanish Temperinillo, Super Tuscan, Chardonnay, Moscato, Riesling, and Black Currant Port. We enjoy making the wines and give most to large parties, who knows down the road, the truth is most wineries do not make any money, Gary

Hmmmm I think it's stopped here in central VA .
I plowed Friday afternoon about 2PM and again today at noon . Looks like I'll need to plow again sunday as theres maybe another 4-5 inches out there and I want the driveway to melt and hopefully dry sunday and or Monday . Generally that black top draws in enough if there's sunshine to get what I leave melted off !
We got a lot of drifting this time , but as best I can figure it we ended up with 14-18 inches . Not a terrible amount but not a small amount either . I'm just glad I have the John Deere 4300 4x4 with a bucket on the front :bigbye:

Generally I like 3-4 inches of this stuff as long as deer seasons still in . But this time of year it isn't any longer !
But on the other hand (provided Dullus doesn't shut down) I'm outta here in about 25 days for the Philippines . After a month there I get back in perspective again . Well that's been the case in the past , with the new grandson this time it just might be a bit different :rotf:

Finally made enough ice in Maine to get to the fish. Landlocked salmon and brown trout for supper😋 Was 3F with windchill, colder in the morning so we're making ice. Fishing at sunrise beats shoveling heavy, wet snow. You folks be careful moving that stuff, it'll melt and settle quick enough. Sounds like you-all are well provisioned. 43F forecast for Tuesday up here😅

Roger that. The darkness is worse than the cold but the two together gets a bit old sometimes. I'm not an avid skier so I just hang inside and do projects. I'm rebuilding a vintage Zeiss petrographic microscope as of lately. We're up to 6hrs of daylight now I think and gaining 7min/day. It will come fast. Spring is just around the corner. This has been about the warmest winter I can remember; it's hardly been below zero by more than a few degrees.

Felt good to get out and stretch the legs today. After the temp got above 10 degrees, I headed a little North where the snowfall was only about 6", we only got 10" here at home. Was at a 3000 acre hunting club I belong to--and yes, we own all 3000 acres. No fine double gun hung over my arm, but instead an H&R Handi-rifle in .223. I put in 4 1/2 hrs in the fresh unbroken snow. Saw 3 bucks including a nice 10 pt and probably 20 does. The object of my desire today was coyote, I saw 2, but they saw me first, and no shots were available. An unfrozen pothole/beaver flowage had about 50 mallards on it--mental note to try duck hunting next year.
At home, the wife had laid out a package of walleye, so I made deep fried beer batter walleye. Gee, I wish it would snow again next weekend.
Hope you all have not had too much problems surviving Snowmegeddon.

Here in the lehigh valley ( extreme east middle portion of state) we received 24-30 inches of snow. Some records were broken. After shoveling for hours, it was time for some bourbon,my pipe, and some perusing of my Parker books.
