February 28, 2016 is the deadline for nominations for the 'belated' 2015 or current 2016 Distinguished Service Award. Please get your nominations in before it's too late. Please put some good thought into this and be sure that your nominees are those folks who have shown a real dedication to the organization and its membership by their continued actions and deeds.

Please keep in mind that currently seated officers and BOD members are ineligible for this award, but former officers and BOD members are eligible.

Please go to the Home Page and click on the "Awards and Recognitions" tab to learn about the program and how to nominate PGCA Members who you believe are deserving of this coveted award.

A few years ago, I submitted a detailed nomination for three or four people. I would resubmit it if I can find it. It would be generous of those in charge of these nominations to keep a file of previous nominations.

The "generous" Distinguished Service Committee in fact does keep a 'live' Excel file of all nominations, even on those nominees who are not eligible... keeping in mind that they must be current PGCA Members and that they must meet the criteria spelled out on the DSA page under Awards and Recognitions from the Home page.
However, due to the fact that it is a live file it can not be shared with anyone other than the three DSA committee members. The BOD doesn't even have the file, so please don't anyone ask for it.

We do still have your nominations Bill, but we must also keep in mind that there is a three-year eligibility cutoff so any nominations older than three years will have rolled over into the non-eligible status. If however, that nominee has nominations within the three year cutoff he is still eligible. The two members with the most nomination by February 28 midnight will receive the awards for 2016.

I just looked at the honor roll. What a crew. There are many names that should be there.
Bill- redo your nominations!!!

Yup, I could do that, but I would have to run a campaign, and I'm not sure a "campaign" on this forum would be allowed. I am satisfied with my original submissions. The committee has enough information to make a decision.

Does the committee re-consider old submissions?

Does the committee re-consider old submissions?
Yes, includes 3 years worth of nominations. This forum entry should provide answers to your questions:

I believe the ones Bill Murphy submitted have timed out. I see his were made in 2011.

And they were good ones. Nothing about the quality of the people I recommended has changed since 2011. The requirement that submissions be campaigned by the submitter takes away from the importance of the "committee". Once I submit a certain person, it should not be neccesary for me to get three or four more people to submit that person's name for him to be considered. When I submit a name and a set of reasons for my recommendations, the "committee" should take over and make a decision. From what I have been told in the past, a certain number of nominations of a certain nominee are neccesary for that person to be considered. That is not the way it should be done. Give some power to the "committee" without multiple nominations of a certain person. PM me or call me to discuss. Thank you.

I might add that there is much evidence that we should return, at least for a year or two, to the award of more than the small number of awards that we have given recently. We have so many unrecognized heroes that should be included.

Bill, I couldn't agree more with that statement but there are so few members getting involved by the simple act of nominating people that I need to bring this program to the forefront a couple of months before each and every Annual Meeting.... and worse, having to keep bringing it back TTT because "the silence is deafening."

And your first point in this post will be accepted for consideration and will be discussed among the committee.

Bill- You don't have to campaign at all. Just resubmit the names and say "see my prior nominations".
I am sure you offered good people and reasons back then.
Done.

I'll respond to each of these issues that brother Bill has brought up.

And they were good ones. Nothing about the quality of the people I recommended has changed since 2011.

But apparently you were the only one who thought enough of those nominees to submit their names. That does not negate the quality of their service, it just doesn't put them up with members who received more nominations.

The requirement that submissions be campaigned by the submitter takes away from the importance of the "committee".

There is nothing in the DSA 'program' which suggests anyone should "campaign" for a certain person to be nominated multiple times.

Once I submit a certain person, it should not be necessary for me to get three or four more people to submit that person's name for him to be considered.

It is not necessary that anyone do that. A Member who is worthy of the award should stand out in enough people's minds that they nominate him without being prodded to do so, or 'campaigned.'

When I submit a name and a set of reasons for my recommendations, the "committee" should take over and make a decision.

It is not for the committee to make any decisions as to whom might be worthy of the award - that is entirely up to the membership to decide that by making nominations. The committee is in place purely in an administrative function.

From what I have been told in the past, a certain number of nominations of a certain nominee are neccesary for that person to be considered. That is not the way it should be done.

Not so - there is no number requirement. Nominees need only receive sufficient nominations to place them above others who receive nominations.

Give some power to the "committee" without multiple nominations of a certain person.

The committee has all the power it wants. It is a self-governing committee. The committee does not want to decide who the Awardees are - that is not compatible with the spirit of the program. Can you imagine all the crap and BS that would fall on the committee if we were the ones making decisions of who would receive the Distinguished Service Award?????

PM me or call me to discuss. Thank you.

We have so many unrecognized heroes that should be included.

Bill,
You are absolutely right, there are many unrecognized hero's that should be included. Part of the problem is that so many of those that worked hard to build the organization, especially in the early years are not known to many of todays members. Many of us that have not been involved from the beginning may only know what has gone on over the last few years and if long time members like yourself don't bring these names to the forefront who will? I don't think there is a problem with the way the award system is set up, I think we just need more input from our membership to help get these worthy members recognized. I would welcome your thoughts on candidates for this years selection so please feel free to pm me your list for consideration.

Only one week remaining to make your nominations for the Distinguished Service Award.

I hope we receive at least as many nominations for the DSA as there were suggested captions on the "Photo Caption Contest" thread.

Regards and Thanks to all who send nominations for recipients of the DSA.
