Sunscreen and warm weather clothes . . . A big part of the problem with duck numbers down here

There are more mallards in NY than we have ever seen this time of year. They are stacked up like cord wood in the marshes around Montezuma. We open second season on Saturday. I doubt with the weather they will move south this year. Sorry boys.

I have heard that on here and also from other people. It is not stopping me from going though.

Thanks for the fantastic pictures! That is a nice ricefield trunk. We have blue birds, mosquitos, gators, snakes but hardly a duck!

My cousin, Harry Lane, grew up on Combahee Plantation and built trunks as part of his business. We used him on several occasions and I helped him build and install one. The whole rice culture history around here is fascinating

That is about right, although there are a few.

I need a new trunk! I have a decent guest cabin so you and Harry can come up and build and install it? They are a work of art. My existing ones are 26 years old and going strong.
Merry Christmas

I would love to, except Harry passed away a few years ago. Nemours Plantation makes them and has done a few for other plantations

as we talked about last week- they may be here - but they are totally gun shy- the neighbor's pond, that the sitting room over looks (which rarely has birds this time of year because it is normally frozen) has been loaded with mallards this past week -

Macallan has sat up when outside and listened a couple times when a raucous hen has sounded off

but just now- some one down the road a ways fired a gun- one shot (its the last day of muzzleloader here)- far enough off to be well muffled- but -instantly - the whole group lifted off at the sound and headed up the field- maybe to the other neighbor's pond, or over the hill to the river.

There are a few out at Bennett's point and Annandale that build them as well. Not may people left that can with experience. Dying art for sure.

The manager at Annandale still build them. He built my three 20+ years ago when he was with DNR. Great guy but really busy these days managing for Dan Ray.
