Hammer Gun snap caps

Hi all,
Just had my old parker hammer gun Damascus barrels from 1885 redone and everyone that picks it up cocks the hammers and dry fires it- so I got a set of A-Zoom 10 gauge anodized aluminum snap caps to protect same. Since the metals of the barrels are iron and steel and the caps aluminum (dissimilar metals) should I leave the caps in the gun for extended periods or remove them? Regards HV

I haven't a clue about the snap caps. I would suggest you snap a back fist to the temple of anyone who cocks the hammers on your Parker.

YOU don't require the snap caps, but, keep them handy for those occasions when others take liberties with your gun.

I have stored my hammerless guns for years, with A-Zooms, and never observed any changes from electrolysis(?) between the two different metals.

Need moisture to complete the circuit for electrolytic corrosion. If you put them away tight and dry as opposed to loose and wet you should have no problems.

The whole perception that good gun springs will somehow become fatigued by lengthy compression is of very doubtful validity. Hence, I use snap caps to test lock function, not relax spring tension.

And there is some value in protecting a good hammer gun against hazards.

But if it makes you feel better to relax springs with snap caps, by all means do it...

snap caps are great for checking the function as said above

but you know you can decock a hammer by just lowering the hammer with your thumb while pulling the trigger

no need to have a snap cap in the chamber for storage
