I'm curiouse !

My barrels are stamped 5 pounds 4 ounces and the barrels are 32" as the serialization book says they should be . When I weighed them on a postal scale it said 4 pounds 12 ounces , and with the forend on they weighed 5 pounds 4 ounces .

So is it safe to assume the struck weight on the barrels is to include the forend as well ?

This is a #3 frame by the way with the barrels and forend at 5 pounds 4 ounces and the stock action at 4 pounds two ounces my guns a touch heavier then I thought at 9 pounds 6 ounces .

The weight stamps are UN Struck weight. That would have been the weight of the barrels assembled in their raw form, before any material was removed or before they were even chambered I believe. So the difference in weight is material removed in the finishing process.

And does not include the forend.

This topic will be a source of confusion (hopefully for many generations) but it begs the question "who cares what the raw, unfinished, un-chambered, un-bored and choked weight is?" I'm not suggesting I disagree with the generally accepted meaning of the stamping but I question whether it means as much as the weight of the finished barrels and fore end.

With the caveat that I am a complete tyro (at this Parker stuff), I weighed three guns available to me and found the following actual weights.

28ga VH, 28" marked 3^2: bbls only=2#8oz; w/FE=3#2oz
16ga TA, 28" marked 3^5: bbls only=2#12oz; w/FE=3#5oz
16ga Trojan, 26" marked 3^4: bbls only=2#14oz; w/FE=3#4oz

It seems to me that there would had to have been a pretty big pile of chips/shavings of removed metal to equal the weights of the fore ends on each of these three guns.:corn:

Additionally: For whatever it's worth, the percentage weight change on each of the above barrel sets (not including the fore ends) between stamped ("unstuck weight") and actual weight is: 20% for the VH 28, 12% for the Trojan 16 (both fluid steel), and 17% for the TA 16 (laminated steel).

"It gets thickerer and Thickerer" I have had many a hmmm moment as, I too have weighed many of my barrels, together with their fore ends, from 28 to 12 and, remarkably, found similar results.

It might me interesting to do some weights on barrels with factory beaver tail forends.

Just weighed my top lever hammer gun serial 24945 30" barrels without forearm 3lb 15oz with forearm 4 lb 6 oz. Barrels stamped 4 / 6 Kinda strange......
