Hello All,
I don't think I need to tell too many people here about the Fall Southern SxS classic in October at Backwoods Quail. It's home to the Parker/L.C. Smith Trap Challenge.
With there being no Vintage Cup this year, the southeast Vintager chapters (Carolina, Georgia, Alabama and Magnolia) are making a commitment to grow the Fall SxS this year and ensure its future success. Events that are not supported by attendance will simply go away. So I want to encourage all PGCA members to save the date (Oct. 24 - 26) and attend this excellent event if you can. The word on the DoubleGunShop forum is that this year promises to be the best so far.

Besides the Parker/L.C. Smith games, there will be lots of other shooting events to participate in this year, including flurry shoots, sub-gauge classes and maybe even an event for drillings.
If you haven't been to Backwoods Quail, let me commend Rick Hemmingway and his staff to you. They always do a first-class job with any event they host. They have an excellent course and throw great targets. Also, October is a great time to be on the South Carolina coast as the weather is usually very fine and the seafood is in season.
To wrap up this missive, if you've thought about making this trip to Georgetown, SC, this is the year! Come on and bring those SxS's and SBT's and have some fun.
Thanks all, and I hope to see many of you in Georgetown this October.

NOTE: While Vintager chapters are supporting it, the Southern SxS is NOT a Vintager event, so no worry about ties, breeks or other funny looking clothes. Come as you are!

The Fall Southern is now poised to become the nation's second premier SxS event after the Spring affair. The stars are aligned.
I've attended in the past, and can say that Backwoods is an outstanding facility with considerably more "room" than other events. Parking should be no problem. And with a good vendor turnout, THIS will be THE shoot to attend in the Fall.
We usually stay on the coast, enjoy great seafood and BBQ, count pelicans, and relax between trips to Backwoods. As a bonus, the summer crowds are gone.
It's simple: Don't miss the Fall Southern!

Great event and plan to attend
How does the Trap Challenge work, from Backwoods web site looks like top 3 and it was a tie 2014. Although results say LC Smith won. My guess is long run. It appears to be re-entry too top 50 each competitor scored.
How about a brief rules re-cap.

Problem for us Northerner's is that is prime time fall hunting season :crying: I love going to shoots and seeing everyone and shooting, but when it get's down to real hunting or clays, clays is going to lose.

In case it makes any difference, it is also hunting season in SC at that time. Quail and dove to name just a few species.
And, ahem, the venue is called the Backwoods Quail Club...
Just saying LOL.

It is a bit of a hike for those living far away, but Backwoods is a great facility. Rick and his staff put on a first class show. Georgetown is an underrated historic town and Pawley's Island and the beaches are nearby.
It is well worth the trip. Fun for the whole family

One of the best things about the PGCA is that it has brought together people from all over the country. I know this event isn't possible for everyone to travel to, but if the idea has captured your imagination, be sure to attend some of the SxS events that are closer to home. We're fortunate in this moment to have a lot them springing up, but we need to keep supporting them to ensure we have venues for gathering and shooting the guns we enjoy. So com'on if can!
Mills (or someone else in the know), is the trap challenge only for SBT guns or can side by sides shoot too? I've got a Parker hammer gun I'd like to try out on some trap targets...

Rick Hemmingway has now joined the ranks of Parker owners! He just purchased a very nice ,all original, grade 1, 12ga laminated barreled hammer gun from one of our members (not me). I think we can now expect to see Rick shooting his Parker at some of the SXS events.

Rick Hemingway would know for sure, but I shot a Parker hammer gun in the last year's trap challenge. I am pretty sure it is not limited to SBT's

What happened to the Vintagers event?

Thanks Mills, and Happy Birthday!
The national organization of Vintagers is reorganizing, with Ray Poudrier stepping down as President. While a new charter is being created and new officers elected, there was no plan made for a Vintage Cup this year. In the meantime, local chapters are carrying on as usual.
As I said at the beginning of this thread, with no Vintage Cup this year, several of the southern Vintagers chapters are working hard to support the Fall Southern. I'm glad there's been good discussion here and I look forward to seeing many PGCA folks in Georgetown in October.

I'll be attending again this year for sure, and I'm happy to see some additional support from the Vintagers. This is one of my favorite shooting weekends of the year and I'd like nothing more than to see it grow.

Matt, for your info, the Trap event can be shot with single or double barrels. I've shot a double in the event the last several years.

For the past three years he has allowed us to start competition shooting on Thursday.
Any one know about this year?

Gentlemen:
With reference to those contemplating a junket to the Southern Side-by-side at Backwoods Quail Club near the end of October:
I have recently returned from one of my frequent trips to this part of SC, and I feel compelled to re-emphasize some outstanding reasons to consider The Fall Southern as a “must attend” event for double gun enthusiasts:
1) The club has outstanding facilities, including all clay target games and two Sporting courses.
2) The grounds are especially spacious with ample room for vendors and attendee parking. No roadside parking is necessary.
3) The club is an easy drive from Georgetown, maybe 15 minutes.
4) For the more cosmopolitan sportsman and companions, the club is a mere 30 minute drive from Pawley’s Island, Litchfield by The Sea, or Murrell’s Inlet on the beautiful SC coast. These communities are delightfully upscale and offer a host of amenities including over 100 golf courses, wonderful beaches, and a bewildering choice of restaurants with some of the finest seafood you will find in America. The restaurant-lined Marsh Walk in Murrells Inlet (home of Mickey Spillane) is especially fun.
5) Within the above coastal communities, you will also find the sculpture and art of Brookgreen Gardens, the beaches and wildlife of Huntington State Park, and more. This can be a delightful diversion for the wife, family and you! Check them out:

Finally, the end of October is definitely “off season” so very good rates are available at some outstanding hotels. For fans of the ocean, I recommend the Litchfield Inn:

So… what’s not to like? Double guns, great golf, great seafood, great accommodations – and an ocean.
(this is a personal recommendation to PGCA members, and not a paid promotion)
