Received this notice on Hodgden powders. Of most concern to me are the changes to Universal. With no more 7625 and others I worry that there won't be much choice for LP 16 gauge and others.

Hmmmm I was planning on switching to Universal Clays for the Short 10 , 12 , 16 and 20 once I used up all my SR7625 maybe I better rethink that one !

I suppose Unique could be pressed to replace the SR powder .

Unique and Green Dot have similar burn rates good replacements for 7625. I use both in my 16s. 10 G, just loaded some with Green Dot, will see.

What kind of pressures are you getting with green dot and unique in 16 ga.? Are you loading 2 1/2 inch?

green dot does work very well in the short 10 ga as said...charlie

Loading for vintage doubles my normal routine is work up the load then shoot it in a modern gun for a while before going to a Parker. I don't own a modern 10 G though. Be good if we could work off published data using components that are available, but that’s not possible today. Be clear this works for me in my gun may not in yours. Use caution !!

All loads are for 2 7/8 inch chambers, folded hull is 2 7/8 inches. Roll crimped hull I cut the fold off ending up with a hull about 2 1/2 inches

My short 10 light spreader shell load is Charlie Cleveland's 19 G of Red dot 1 1/8 oz in RST hulls Remington SP 10 wad with a 12 G Polywad yellow spreader disk on top of the shot, roll crimped. Latest loads went up to 20 grs looking for a better burn, still need to shoot some more of the 20grs to see if it's better than 19 grs. Caution Short 10 PDF file has some very hot Red Dot loads, some way too hot. Lightest Recommended is 22.5 with Red Dot and 1 1/8. I think that's a least maximum and don't plan to go over 20 with mine. Far as I know no published pressure data on Red Dot loads

Green dot lightest recommended load off the PDF file is 28.5 using 1 1/4 oz. My loads are 27.5 Green Dot in the RST once fired hulls. Remington SP 10 wad with a cut down fiber filler wad under the shot, fold crimped. Short 10 PDF has Alliant Green Dot Data for 3 1/2 inch hulls using same components = 28.5 charge 1 1/4 oz shot about 8500 lbs

Unique is a back up powder for me, however it ought to substitute about same grain weight as Green Dot. It’s a little slower which gives some safety factor substituting. And both GD and Unique are slower than 7625. Don’t take these charts as gospel, indicators only. If you pull them off the internet they don't all say the same thing.

Once I settle on both loads will send them off for pressure testing.

My SR7625 recipe came from Ross Seyfried in an article he wrote for Handloader quite a few years ago . I made sure I kept the magazine with the load as he used a W&C Scott that was identical to the one my grandfather had and I have now .

Since I still have a little over 8 pounds of SR7625 I may change over my 12 , 16 and 20 loads to use another powder and save the 7625 just for the 10 gauge . I suspect 8 pounds outta keep me in business with the 10 gauge for 4 or 5 years .

I have a Birmingham 16 gauge boxlock, that is similar to an older Scott, that I love to shoot. I baby it with 2 1/2", 7/8 oz 7625 loads. It was proofed at 1oz. I think I have about 4lb. of the powder left. After that goes who knows what will be available. Ugh.

My 16's work well with Unique and 7/8 oz. I do have to put a filler in the wad take up some shot space.

Try some Downrange DR16 wads. You can load 3/4, 7/8 and 1oz. loads and not have to change a thing on your loader.

DR 16 is the one for sure, none to be had though. I hear DR has some sort of production problem with it. Recobs is supposed to get the first shipments.

There is a nice small gas station combo gun and fishing shop on the outskirts of Burlington,Vt. named Ditillios-very friendly and popular. After starting this post not very optimistically I figured I'd stop in and take a chance and check on powder. Woo hoo To my surprise I scored 4 pounds of Universal.
That will keep my sixteens in operation for quite some time.
Got to reminiscing with one of the regulars and we concluded that the manufacturers are discontinuing all those nice powders that smelled good.
