I finally have a 16ga VH and I need ammo for it. I'm not going to shoot it regularly so I'm going to shoot factory loads instead of reloading. It looks like I can buy Remington game loads with 1oz of shot locally, or I can buy RST's in either 7/8 oz or 3/4 oz. Considering I'm just getting over shoulder surgery, recoil would be a consideration and of course the 1 oz game loads would have more recoil than the RST's. There is also a cost difference, the game loads would be about $95 for a flat versus $125 for the RST. Has anyone shot the Remington game loads and are they a shell that has a lot of felt recoil? I realize everyone feels recoil differently.

IMHO, factory shells have higher recoil, to ensure they can cycle through dirty semi-autos. I suspect (altho I have no data) that they use smaller amounts of hot powder, and may save a bit of money on powder costs.

Chuck, the Rem 1 oz loads will have more recoil than Federal 1 oz loads. I order Federal H160 loads, 2 1/2 dram, 1165 fps. My case price brings it down to $80 per flat. I use that load for most targets and hunting in either 8, 7 1/2 or 6.

The Remington 1 oz 16's are 1200fps. Although no dre is stated, my guess is that they are 2 3/4 dre. Some here have complained about their recoil. To me its the right recoil for their load, although it is more than the Federals.

I have shot RST 1 oz loads, they are about the same speed as Federals, and to my shoulder, the RST 1oz and the Fed 1 oz feel the same. Obviously, if you really need minimal recoil, you could ask RST to run a few cases of 7/8 oz low speed, maybe 1050 or 1100fps.

I have always found that the Remington game loads to be some of the heaviest recoiling shells for their load

i do not shoot them in any of my side by sides

Chuck- Cabela's had their Herter's brand with 1 oz. in #8 shot for $69.99 per flat in East Hartford. I loaded up on them 3 weeks ago. They appear to be Cheddite hulls.
I used them interchangably with RSTs 2.5 inch loads last Sunday at Addieville and honestly didn't feel much difference.
I was able to miss equally well with both loads.

$125 for RST 16's?? They were only $110/flat when I bought them last.

Dean, you forget about the shipping. I'm not sure if they charge Pa tax.

I just got two more cases of herters from Cabelas, free shipping and 20% off, came to 5.00 per box. At these prices already have a lifetime supply.

I am a Cabelas Club Visa member which gives me additional benefits. But the web site has them discounted from reg. price. I recommend the club card. They email specials all the time and they vary in discount, so I wait for the right one. The shells are 1165 fps so I shoot them in all my guns , Damascus included. Low recoil for 1 oz.

I shot some Herter's 16s and rsts last Sunday. Both work well, but the rsts were less recoil by far.

Thanks for the replies. I ordered the Herters 16ga, 1oz. dove and quail loads. I got 2 flats for the price I would have paid for 1 flat of RST's. I'll just have to put up with a little more recoil.

Dave you are correct. They pound my Trojan and VH 16 so after a box or two I quit them. But love them in my Sweet Sixteen A5. They smoke doves just like a 12.

I have shot quite a few of the Cabela's/Herters and have also been reloading them. They are cheddite hulls. Don't think I'd shoot them thru Damascus barrels, but they reload nicely, My VH 16 1 frame has known nothing but the black RGL's since I bought it in 1986. I personally would shoot them. I have 6 cases of RGL's left that I bought at $40/case and 2 cases of Federals and 6 cases of the Herters. My reloads of those shells and 2 1/2" RST's are definitely more recoil friendly when shooting a lot such as shooting clays. You might be able to pick up a MEC 600 cheaply at a gun show and try reloading. I picked up a Mec 600 in 20 ga+ 100 wads and 100 primers for $50 at the gun show in Washington, Pa on Sat. Are you having your shoot in Harrisburg again this spring?

Harold, my shoot is set for April 11th. Hope you can make it.

Look at Sportsmans warehouse or Cabelas and see what Rio offers. They have a good website also. They offer the best variety of loads in other guages and for a good price.
