I get to cross my J. P. Sauer drilling off after a man came in to the Spokane Show selling it. I know it is a 16 x 16 x elephant gun. Thats because I don't know what cal. It is yet but it is pretty large. I was beaming all the way home on my 6 hour drive. Thomas

Neat. Pictures?
How big is big there were several 8mm German rounds, some would be more deer than pachyderm

I will have to measure casting but it looks fairly large. Thomas

9.3x72r seems to be fairly common under 16ga barrels. Your rifle barrel may be marked. Mine is. If it was made after 1912 it should have a marking similar to 8.8/72mm. that is if it is a 9.3. the 8.8 is the actual bore diameter and the groove diameter can be anywhere from .358 to .376. The Europeans still call them 9.3. You will have lots of fun sorting it out.

Many Drillings out there in the 10.75mm Collath and Mauser varieties. Also 11x60

My Sauer hammer drilling is double 16 X 11.15X65, shoots short .410s just fine. Edgar helped me with some original ammunition which I will keep with the gun but won't fire.

Im not sure I ever told you, Bill, but that was also the rifle cartridge of my 2nd drilling, bought from Gary, in 1974. It, too, was a Sauer, but full sidelock top lever with a side cocking lever for the rifle hammer. it was one of the nicest Drillings I ever owned, 2nd only to a Merkel 20X20X8x60mm.
My wife and I had our condo robbed and the a$$hole stole the drilling.
The cutest was a 28gaX28xWin 25-25 hammer drilling. I believe Kirby Hoyt bought that one from Gary at the last Sandanona Vintagers.

My Sauer is the opposite working system from Edgar's. Mine is "Side lever to open, top lever to select rifle barrel." Pretty neat.

Wayne: The only number on the bottom of rifle barrel is 62/78. If that helps any. I also noted as Bill stated that a 410 fits real nice. Thomas

Maybe some pic's will shed some light. If you can get some good pictures of the proof marks it may help. Sounds like something in the 43 to 45cal neighborhood.

If a .410 fit's nice, you can bet it's 11.15x60R. You can also shoot .44wcf (44-40) out of that.

Thomas, 11.15x60R is easy to make. Use a 9.3x74 case, trim to 2.348, and fire form. Load with a .453" cast lead bullet using 45-70 loading data.
This cartridge is not the same as thee 11.15x60R Mauser, which is a bottle necked case.

Edgar: I think I will use some 44-40 that I have which I use for Model 73 winchester. I will post some photo's Of the old girl which has a few scars but so do I. Thomas
