Just a quick question. I have an opportunity to purchase a late model VHE straight stock single trigger 20 gauge, with splinter forend and 28" barrels. The S/N is 242177. I am guessing that there are no records on these late model guns. The case is about 98% condition, and the wood is not much further behind it. I do not have pictures, but looking for feedback on how rare these guns are, and some range on value. Any guesses when this gun may have been made. I would have never had a chance for this gun except I have a Model 417 1/2 22 Walnut hill and a Winchester model 65 with a shotgun stock chambered in 218 bee that is up for trade.
Thanks Phil

Phil: I have no idea what it is worth but a 20ga VHE in original 98% condition would be a rare find in my opinion. Would love to see photos. Bob

Phil, Your gun falls in the last range of guns made by Remington and records(IBM cards) are incomplete. The serialization book lists these last guns anywhere from 1939-1942. Sounds like a great find. Congrats and I hope the deal works out for you.

The 20 Gauge Parker will need to wait until I get back from Antelope hunting before doing any trading. Antelope opens on September 5 and runs until the 13th. Planning on taking the time to find a nice "GOAT". I am leaving a little early to do some scouting as it took me 31 years to draw the tag in Arizona.
I have shot the 20 Gauge on some pigeons and some pen raised Bobwhites and its a nice fit.
Tomorrow morning on the way out of town I will take some time to hunt a few doves. Just can not miss the opening day of dove season. Should have a mixed shoot in the morning of Morning, Eurasian, and Whitewing dove, as well as some pigeons. I am taking my Parker 16 VHE and my 8 gauge, can only shoot pigeons and Eurasian doves with the 8, but I am determined to earn my Double pin this year LOL.

The gun was probably made in early 1941. I once owned 242103 that was shipped in April of 1941, confirmed by a Remington factory letter to the original buyer. The letter was written by a Mr. carpenter, head of sales. I can not remember his first name.

Thank you for the information. Bill can you tell me if Remington still has the Parker records? If so I would try and get the letter before negotiating the trade.

good luck on the double pin with the eight gauge i hope...i would be afraid to give the value of a gun with such good condition..now if it were a run of the mill gun i would say the vhe 20 would fall in the 3500 bracket...get some pictures of the goat when you get him..good luck...charlie

High condition 20 ga VHE with 28" barrels and a straight stock? Easy $5k gun, some will pay more. You can find higher grade Parkers but the gun you are looking at is as good as it gets.

There are no Antelope native to North America. They are Pronghorns. Likewise, it should be "Bison Bill" as there are no Buffalo native to North America!!

As to the buffalo, you might be mistaken as you have never met my Sister-in-law and she was born in Brooklyn.:rotf:

Researcher you are correct, but the AZ Game and fish call them Pronghorn Antelope. Many of us call them Goats.

Still fast and a lot of fun to hunt.

Don't talk to me. I've just finished my fifth day in the same house here on Kodiak with my Sister-in-law!! My much more favored Sister-in-law, who actually lives in this house, escaped to the mainland yesterday with her blood pressure rapidly climbing!! Hopefully she is chilled out by now!!
Sorry, this thread is not about Sisters-in-law or Antelope. lets get back to the VHE-Grade 20-gauge!!

Phil,
The PGCA has no records for your gun. However Griffin & Howe does so contact Bob Beach at G&H.
Just a note on these high S/N Remington guns. Remember, these were depression era guns and many times they sat at the hardware store or sporting goods store for a long time without being sold. I see quite often large shipments of Parker's returned to Remington for credit. Remington would recondition these guns and resell them.

Phil, your gun was built 55 units later than mine, so here is your baseline;

Phil:
I would follow the advice you have received from few members in this thread to post photos, as many very high condition Parkers, even late ones that are "only" 73 years old have had a complete restoration yet are sold as 98%. The lack of late Remington records for extras such as a straight stock or SS trigger also complicates the matter.
However, many of our members (not myself) have a depth of experience with Parkers that allows them to make a very good guess if the gun has been restored, and they can often identify who did the work by the case colors.
Than aside, if you really like the gun, it shoots well, and you and plan to keep it for some time, then the fact it may have been restored becomes less important.

PM sent.
Is the trigger a Parker or a Miller?

Phil, before you jump into any trades make certain it is not a refinished gun. Some refinish jobs... no, most refinish jobs will be considerably less valuable than an original, untouched Parker in the same level of condition. Show us some picures before you make the trade.
Incidentally, you can't get a letter from Remington on your Parker. We, the PGCA, are the only source for a letter on your Parker, if there is even any information. There is also the possibility that Bob Beach at Griffin & Howe may have information on your Parker.
Oops.... Sorry Chuck - I just saw your .

I will post some pictures when I return from my hunt and get feedback before doing any trading. I appreciate all of the feedback thus far.

Sorry for the delays. It has been a great run since September 1. Thanks to my loving and understanding wife I have been on a true adventure for the better part of a month. I had a wonderful hunt with the companionship of my brother George 15 months my senior ( He says we are Irish twins,) He is also retired from a position with the federal government having chased bad guys for over 25 years. We are now both free to do the things we sat in our room and dreamed about as kids. Lots of things we said we would do when we grew up, with the our imagination sparked by FUR-FISH- GAME, Outdoor Life, Sports Afield, and a copy of the Herter's catalog.
Started out September 1 shooting Whitewing, Eurasian, and Morning dove with a mix of pigeons thrown in for good measure. Even used the 8 gauge Parker 7 frame on some Eurasian doves and pigeons. Made some really fantastic shots to the amusement of my shooting partners.
Then off for a hunt for my Pronghorn that I waited 31 years to get a tag for. Finally to the North rim of the Grand Canyon were at 9000 feet George and I along with our dogs harvested 9 Grouse. George harvested 5 and I was able to take 4 ( Wont spend a lot of time talking about the birds I missed on the wing). Scout my puppy, that I wrote about in the last Parker pages pointed and retrieved his first Grouse. Started over a log and with his front feet on a log in some berry bushes. Froze up solid tail and head held high. Birds exploded a few seconds later and I was fortunate enough to bring a Dusky Grouse down. Nice retrieve to end the hunt for that day.
I promised my friend we will talk about a trade on the Parker 20 when I get back from my next hunt October 1.
Bob Beach called me while I was on the Pronghorn hunt and gave me information on the Parker. It was sold in 1941 by A&F. It did not indicate it had what type of trigger, so I will take pictures and get feedback when I return.
I was fortunate to get invited to hunt elk in Wyoming on the NX ranch so I am leaving Wednesday. I guess I need to share with my wife when I return that along with the turkey hunt starting Oct 3rd (also opening day of quail season), we were drawn for Sandhill Crane and Mule deer in November.
I hate to share all of the good new at once with her.
Some how when George and I were dreaming about all of the hunting we were going to do we some how forgot that we might be married. Again thank god for understanding wives.

That is quite the pronghorn Phil! Can't say I've seen a better one. I agree on the VHE20 being in the 5K range also. A 28" VH20 in nice condition I picked up a few yrs back was a bit under $3500.

What Mr. Flanders said re the Pronghorn. Looks to be near 15 inches which is a really good Pronghorn.
