I got this one shortly after the french one. Its a good shooter but much heavier than the french gun. It is a birmingham made gun but I believe Clabrough made them for the American Market. Feels like an American Gun from that era.

Clabrough was an Englishman who came to the US and established a few shops out West to sell guns that were basically made in Birmingham. His most notable shop was in San Francisco.
The guns themselves ranged from fairly prosaic, such as yours, to very high end. But they were all made with good English craftsmanship.
A new book has just been published on the Clabrough guns. "J. P. Clabrough Birmingham Gunmaker" by Lawrence Skelton. Cost is about $85 but is full of photos and information and fairly well done. Only available from the author at

The frame looks similar to my WC Scott.

This is my second Clabrough. They often can be found at bargain prices since they are a less familiar name. I have noticed that the early hammerless guns are very similar in appearance to WC Scotts. Ive heard that the Birmingham gun trade was a collaborative operation with the final name on the gun and to some extent the checkering pattern and engraving being what distinguished a particular piece as being a Scott or a Clabrough etc. I once blew an opportunity for a spectacular Clabrough hammer gun that I could have had for a few hundred dollars and I have kicked myself for years over that. Ive got the Clabrough book on my Christmas wish list

I think Rich (COB), has a Clabrough hammer gun and he just loves it. He must be in the UP this weekend or I'm sure he would have chimed in by now. Nice gun Brent.

I checked out the clabrough link. I have a 12 hammergun with similar engraving. The sidelock in this post has the dogs head buttplate that says clabrough duck and quail gun. With full full chokes. Im thinking more duck and goose gun
