Any one had any success with reloading 2 1/2" 16 gauge using PB powder? If so any recipes to share?
Thanks

Eric, what kind of load are you looking for--3/4, 7/8, or 1 oz loads. I have several loads for 2 1/2" using PB mostly for 3/4 oz loads. I have a few lbs of PB myself and am going to use it in 2 1/2". It seems to be a good powder for lower pressure, moderate velocity 16 loads.
Let us know what you are looking for and I'll get it out to you.
Gosh, there is a fall chill in the air this morning--it wont be long my friends!

As long as we're on the topic of 16-bore loads, I might share this 3/4 oz load:
13 grs. of Red Dot, CCI 209 primer, a Fiochhi case.
Mild but strong enough, hits and shatters clays with No. 8, and pressures via primer visual are low to moderate.
Load was also tested in WW and Rem black cases and worked equally well.
Since ALL of my guns are now shooting 3/4 oz loads, this one consolidates my 12-bore and 16-bore powder requirements.
PS: 13.5 grs of Red Dot was a bit too stout. Not dangerous, but "gettin' warm."
(sorry about PB info. I quit using that stuff in the 1960s)

I have been using Red Dot for my 3/4 and 7/8 oz 12 ga loads, but am down to my last few ounces of RD. Havent seen any lately or I would try that . I use Green dot(14.5gr) for my 20 ga 3/4 oz loads.

John
Are these loads 2 1/2 or 2 3/4? What wad do you use?
Thanks

Duh! Not enough coffee this morning! They're 2 3/4 but should work fine in 2 1/2 as well... maybe a bit better for crimp. Wad was Downrange plastic 7/8 oz "turquoise."
Hope this helps.
BTW... just bought 8 lbs of Red Dot at my local today. They had two more jugs... and about 20 1 lb bottles of it. Looks like things could get better soon.

We saw some cases of red dot here a month ago. I just got the last of the PB shipment yesterday. All now gone. The guy at Powderhorn VT says he got forty .22 cases and sold in two weeks -usually lasts four months.
Thanks gor the recipes

Thanks Harold
I had thought I replied but must have messed up on the ipad.
I load pretty much 7/8 and some one ounce in 16, 2 1/2". I am looking at the 3/4" though and am encouraged to do so by some by folks at my club. I have the red cheddite and the purple RST HULL (Cheddite) So if you have recipes that you would share I would be very appreciative.
Cool in Vermont also. Two weeks to goose opener and setting up the duck blinds. October 2nd for duck season. Hooked the garden hose up to the duck boat today and all is ready.

Cheddite 2 1/2:
3/4 oz / PB 16.1 gr/ DR16/ ched209/ 1100 @5,400psi
3/4oz/ PB 16.9 gr/ DR16/ ched209/ 1150@6,100 psi
3/4 oz/ PB 17.7 gr/ DR16/ched 209/ 1200@6,600 psi
7/8 oz/ PB 17 gr/SG 16/ Fed209A/ 1100@6560psi (win209 1086@ 6166psi
7/8 oz/ PB 21gr/SG16/ched 209/ 1250@8000 psi
I have been mostly loading 7/8 oz in 16 ga, but have loaded up some 3/4 and really cann0t tell the difference--just have to get my head comfortable with it. I have been using PB, 7625, International, and universal in the 2 1/2" hulls--whatever I can get my hands on.
2o/28 is great in those black RGL's.

I had these loads tested , http://www.16ga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16251 They are both nice mild Low pressure loads . They patterm well in my guns and are clean shooting . I like the one with the Fed 209a primer a little better .
The 3/4 oz loads Harold posted are nice loads . I have used them quite a bit for target practice , and can't tell any difference in my scores between them and the 7/8oz loads. and they save some on expensive lead.
There is a nice PB 1oz LP load on the Hodgdon site in the Fed hull using CCI and Win 209 primers . I cut the hull down to 2 9/16 and it fits fine . It makes a nice heavy low pressure hunting load for my Damascus guns.
The Red dot load post early is more than likely not low pressure if that is what you are looking for . Shotshells don,t show signs of pressure like metallic cartridges do .
Hope this helps .

You may, or may not, be correct here. But that's beside the point. I ought to have Armbrust test my Red Dot load to be sure of things. But I'm willing to bet that it's very close to the stats on your 14 gr Green Dot load, however...

Mark,
those 7/8oz loads I posted were from your post on the 16 ga forum a few weeks ago. When I saw them, I immeadiately printed them off, as they fit well with what I am trying to load. I will use them as I have been able to pick up a few lbs each of PB and 7625. I am saving my couple pounds of Green Dot for 3/4 oz 20 ga loads. Those Nice shot loads will be filed just in case I ever need to shoot non-tox loads thru the old doubles. Thanks for posting the info for the rest of us.

John you may be right, I am sure it is great light load . I would like to see the data. My guess is going to be 8500 psi plus .
I do have some Red Dot data for a 7/8oz load in the Rem hull using 13.3 gr RD and pressure is around 11300 psi . In a straight walled hull and using 3/4 oz pressures should be a lot lower , I don't think it will be below 6000 psi . but I have been wrong before . Ask Tom he should be able to give you close to what it will be.

In sub 12 gauge loads, Red Dot is unacceptable for "low pressure" loads, even if the shot load is light. I recommend that those who are making their own loads study the "burn rate" chart before they make up loads. Red Dot is for big holes, light shot loads, and strong guns.

Who am I to counter such sage wisdom. Then again, if you visit the Alliant Powder website, you will find this description for Red Dot:
"Principal Purpose: Light and standard 12 & 16 ga. target loads"
Then there's this load from the 16 Ga Forum:
WW 16 Poly 1 oz. Red Dot 15 Win 209 Rem R-16 1165 10,400 Hercules
Or these:
WW CF 1 oz. Red Dot 15 27 Win 209 Rem R-16 1165 10,900 Hercules
WW CF 1 oz. Red Dot 16.5 30 Win 209 Rem R-16 1165 9,700 HSR
WW CF 1 oz. Red Dot 17.5 32 CCI 109 Rem R-16 1210 9,500 Lyman 3rd
Or this:
Fed 16 Plas 1 oz. Red Dot 16.0 Fed 209 Rem R 16 1165 9,700 Hercules
Thus I apologize for offering a 3/4 oz load that must be ill advised. And retire from this thread.

John , that's not case at all, my comments aren't meant to offend . Like I said it is probably a very nice light target load . ( safe for guns that will handle modern pressures ) I just don,t think it is low pressure . For safety sake I would not assume it is LP without seeing test data first.
Those Red dot loads you posted above are old loads that where more than likely measured LUP not PSI . I am sure of it on the 3rd Lyman load , because I looked it up in my book .
