Just wondered if any one remembers this magazine, was only around for a couple years but had excellent stories by the master story tellers Zane Grey ,Rouke and the like. The Sept Oct issue had a great story about a parker and a lost hunter and his dog, It is titled The Invincible Grouse! by Joel M Vance a great read, The magazine was called Sporting Tales, gary

Not me Gary - Sporting Classics is the only one familiar to me with the word Sporting in the title.

Sure, I remember. A great magazine that featured good old-fashioned story telling as opposed to the current surplus of how-to, where-to and with-who-to stuff. Joel Marvin in Wisconsin started it, but just couldn't keep it going I guess. I have a complete set!

I just was reading that story in Autumn Shadows by Joel. Good story line and pretty good book too.

A forum found on google mentions that the magazine ceased to exist about December of 2003. It sounds like a great rag that didn't get enough exposure.

I suscribed to it and then it just stopped coming with no notification. I still have all my copies. I loved it and wished it had taken off. At the end of the day, when I am tired and relaxing, I do not want to read technical or how to articles--I want to loose myself in those great stories of yesteryear--preferably about grouse/bird dogs, grand men in grand times.

I like real hunting stories and I do not count the stories/advertisements for the latest plush hunting resort as hunting stories.

Yup, real hunting stories from the past are what makes our history real.

The Fall 2014 Issue of Parker Pages will have a good selection of "real hunting stories". They all do however, promote the use of the Parker shotgun, so I hope that is okay with you all...

I am in favor of going back in previous threads and posts and hit the "THANKS" button for about everything that our Parker Pages editor, Dean Romig, has posted that we agree with. I can't believe that we have him on our staff. Wow, thanks.

:shock:This is the second time in as many months that Bill has gushed profusely about the many fine qualities of our Parker Pages Editor. One might offhandedly presume there was some palm greasing going on here, but I suspect not.
I'll be the first to admit, once you get over the first shock of meeting him, and put aside those uneasy feelings, our editor isn't a bad guy. It may test the fortitude, of the more faint-of-heart, to work up to a full exposure, but I can assure you, if you hang in there, tough it out, as it were, you'll find he really isn't that bad a guy after all. While I may be in the minority, I have found his advice, counsel and general good demeanor to be rare.
Oh, and I am the opinion that Mr. Murphy, too, has a reasonable track record of sharing his knowledge, researching esoteric stuff, and posting his efforts for us.
My opinions have been drawn in to question a lot lately, so you can take this with the grain of sweat I worked up deciding if I even wanted to mention it.

Sporting tales debuted with the Nov/Dec 2000 issue. It was intended to be published bimonthly, with six issues per year. The focus was to be on good stories and on original artwork rather than photography (not that photography can't be artwork!). Joel Marvin is listed as founder/publisher/editor. Here is the premier issue; you'll probably recognize Bob White's work on the cover...

A total of15 issues were published; here is the last issue, Mar/April 2003. By then the format (size) had changed (slightly larger) and while Joel is still listed as founder/publisher, Karl F. Roenigk is listed as editor...

And, if I may, here is the July/August 2000 issue which contains my story "Kindred Spirits", illustrated by some fine artwork by Rod Crossman. Print #1 of a limited edition of "Spirit of Autumn" that is featured with the story stands on my mantle...

It was a real shame when Sporting Tales ceased publication; a beautiful idea with a lot of support but not, apparenlty, quite enough.

Wow, sharing billing with the late Bill Tapply is to be cherished.
I really enjoy Rod Crossman's art and even featured one of his prints on the cover of a past issue of Parker Pages. I think it was this one...

That November/December 2001 cover with the old geezer rabbit hunting with the hammer gun was painted by William Harnden Foster and also made an appearance on an L.L. Bean catalog cover several decades ago.

I spoke with Joel Marvin; he believes he has all issues except #1 and possibly #2. I asked how he wanted to handle it, whether he wanted me to pass on his contact info, etc. but I have not received a reply. I don't want to do so without his permission, and I don't want to be the middle man either, so I guess it's on hold until Joel responds.
