I found alot of Longshot this weekend at the local Cabela's and bought 2 pounds. I did not know anything about it other than it was mentioned frequently and positively on the 16 ga forum. It seems it is used mainly in heavy field loads and may not have much application to light 16 ga loads. I found several 1 oz loads I could live with, but i rarely shoot 1 oz anymore in the 16 ga. Anyb ody have any light loads (7/8) in 16 ga using Longshot, and what would happen if I dropped a 1 oz load to 7/8 and used a filler if necessary.
It can be used for 7/8 oz 20 ga loads, but I really dont need it for that generally loading 3/4 oz with Green Dot in the 20.

I went from 10z to 7/8 in the 16 and changed nothing but the wad. If you kept the wad the same and used a filler (I have used Cheerios) you should be ok. I have only used Longshot in the 20ga.

I had thought about returning the powder, if I could, because of its limited use in light loads. Apparently, it is very good for heavy loads, but those UP grouse aren't that hard to kill--just hard to hit. I do have card wads, fiber wads, overshot cards, and of course a baggie of cheerios on the reloading bench.
Good to hear from you. I know you will find this hard to believe, but I was high gun in our group of 6 last week breaking 80/100 on the local sporting clays range--used a Rizzini 600OU in 16 ga .

Powder usually isn't a returnable item. Congrats on the shooting. If you want to use it in a 2 3/4 inch 20ga hull I have a good low pressure recipe. I found another grouse hunting area while in Channing yesterday.

Harold , as suggested before , If it were me I would use the 1oz data and load 7/8 oz using a filler if needed and give it a try . If loading in a 2 1/2 hull and using the sg 16 wad I doubt that you will need a filler . I have seen at least one ,... 3/4oz load using longshot on the LPG it stated it was very constant , it should be very low pressure though , so may not be good for cold weather . load up a few and give it a try .

Your score would have sounded better if a Parker had been used.

I use the Rizzini 600 Ou with double triggers to shoot up the 14 cases of factory 16 loads I have, and then use the hulls to load up the 7/8 and 3/4 oz loads i prefer for my Parkers, etc. Unfortunately, I do shoot the OU better on clays, but definately prefer to use the SXS's. It is the only gun I own that has choke tubes, but I never switch them, leaving the cyl and IC chokes in the gun. It's heavier weight ( 6 lbs 9 oz) soaks up the recoil from those factory loads.

I am going to load up a box with Longshot using the load supplied by
J.A. Early and from Precision Reloading in an earlier post.(Thanks).
Cheddite 2 1/2", W209, 18 gr Longshot, SG 16 wad, 1 oz, 1200fps@7270.
I will use the same formula but go to 7/8 oz and give them a try/comparison.
If I knew someone who wanted the Longshot, I would just sell it to them as I found/bought 2 lbs of PB yesterday

I recent experiment of mine using a slow powder for light loads had an unexpected result. I believe that the load I used wasn't creating enough pressure to seal the shell walls to the chamber walls. It was suggested by another member that I use a faster powder, which I intend to do when I am able to find some, but until then I'm going to raise the shot wieght a little at a time and observe the results.
