I have a 2 barell set 28 gauge repro that I am
Thinking about changing the mod and full chokes in the 28 in barells
To skeet and improved. It is a 2 trigger pistol grip stock that has a splinter. I found a friend that had a extra repro
Beavertail for end wood that I got and mounted it on the splinter iron to shoot skeet...works fine.
Has anyone else changed the chokes to what I am thinking or should I go to sk1..sk2.as I only shoot quail or
Skeet with it

Thanks for any imput

If you are going to change it I would send it to Briley and have their thin wall flush choke tubes installed. You don't see them and you can put in whatever chokes you like. My favorite choke combination for Grouse is .003 and .007.

I'm with Gerry on this one. With the Briley's you can not only outfit it for Quail, but , with a simple change of choke use it for dove, pheasant, etc. I have several guns with interchangeable chokes and love the versatility it gives me.

I checked and the cost from Briley is $ 499.00. Thats not that bad considering they will also include 5 Choke tubes @ a value of $250.00
so the way I look at it the shop charge is $ 250.00 forgitting the shipping.
The folks also know what they are doing, so it would be quality work.
If I do anything it will be with them.

Thanks for the advice

Gentlemen,
I also have a 28 ga Repro in a two barrel set. The IC/M choke had been opened to SK1/SK2. After patterning it extensively, I again had it opened to .001/.003". It is now my "go to" gun for grouse, woodcock and skeet. I understand that tinkering reduces value, but it is a gun and exists for ME to shoot. Why not make the best of it? Not advice, just an opinion.

Steve, is the final .001" and .003" opening you had done the result of your patterning it at average grouse and woodcock distances? I have found the factory Q1 & Q2 to be ideal for my grouse and woodcock purposes. What kind of patterns were you getting before the final opening of the chokes?

Many years ago I bought a 20 repro with IC/Mod chokes. I really wanted a Q1/Q2 but at the time I could not find one. After shooting the first round of skeet with my new aquisition it was readily apparent that it was choked way too tight for grouse and woodcock so I had it opened to .004 and .008. Following that I patterned it extensively - all at 20 yards. My initial patterning was with my handloads and the open barrel gave me the 30 inch pattern spread I was looking for. I persisted though and bought a box of top end target shells from Win, Federal, and Remington. To say I was surprised with the results is an understatement. The Win AA's delivered an 18 inch pattern, the Rem. STS's 24 inches, and the Federal Gold Medals 32 inches. I thought it could not be so I repeated the patterning on a different day with 10 shots each - same results.

Over the years and many grouse and woodcock I am absolutely thrilled with my decision to open the chokes. However, I shoot only my handloads that I know produce my desired results repeatedly. The moral of the story is that choke makes a difference in pattern performance but so does the choice of ammo you shoot through them. You have to pattern to know what you are getting.

Sent the barells to briley for thin wall chokes after talking to tech dept and they said no problem. My luck big problem barells too thin...they said they could open chokes...my reply
My favorite GUNSMITH ..BILL SCHWARTZ could have done that
...so rather than ship home with no work done...minimum fee plus shipping$ 95.00..so am going to get them to open to skeet and ic..we will see

Barrels too thin? That's a surprise, since I have heard of others who have had chokes installed with no problem. I guess the solution is to measure bore and outside diameter as well as wall thickness before you ship. Tell them what you have measured by email or phone. By the way, Briley is happy to offer a discount to those who represent themselves as Briley dealers, including many gun clubs.

'Briley unable to install thinwall chokes in a Parker Repro'

I, too have a 28 Gauge 28" barreled Reproduction Parker: The chokes were "Mod/Full,"
and when measuring them; the left barrel came out at 45/1000ths. I had a gun I loved, but couldn't hit with. 45/1000ths in a 28 gauge is, for me, just way too tight.
So, they are currently at my gunsmiths for opening to 1 & 3, just as the other Gentleman has done. I had him open them to 5/1000ths each, and they were still too tight.
So, we shall pray and see.

The chokes were opeNed up to SKEET
ON THE RIGHT AND IC on the left side by Briley.
The cost plus postage was 230.00

I shot one round of skeet today and shot a 23.

The change was dramatic from full and mod.

Was I glad I did it....yes...the barells were useless
To me as they were...did I ruin a collectible 2 barell set

Several years ago a friend of mine had briley install chokes in his 20 gauge Repro. The first time he took it hunting about 2" of barrel muzzle turned up missing.

I guess the moral of Briley tubes in Reproductions is "Don't do it!", at least in the 20 & 28ga. Those relatively light barrels are obviously one of the reasons the guns seem to move so well.

I guess I was lucky they did not do the thin wall chokes. I am super happy
with the open chokes of IC and SKEET and would recomend it.
Realy how many people use Mod and Full in a 28 gauge, I know every body talks about shooting doves with those type chokes but they would have to be a lot of them comming in and the person has to be a super shot.

I shot my personal best score ever at our club's 5-Stand with a set of 28-ga. Repro M/F set of barrels. In addition, when shooting Sporting Clays I found it makes little difference whether the 26" Q1/Q2, 26" IC/M or the 28" M/F barrels are aboard--I score about the same. I freely admit, however; that when shooting Skeet or pursuing woods birds, open chokes are the better choice.

After reading this thread I had to measure my 28 barrel chokes. The 26" IC/MOD are .005 and .015. The 28 MOD/FULL are .015 and .035!! No wonder I could not hit those incoming Doves last season. I have made some impressive shots on Valley Quail with the 26 barrels. i have an AYA #2 with 27" barrels that measure .005 and .014.

28 Ga chokes that are as tight as .015 & .035 are for Pheasants and Doves/Pigeons. That probably is the limit of their effective hunting usefulness. Even then, ranges need to be limited/managed. The tighter chokes compensate for the lower pellet count. You either hit them hard or miss completely. I've opened mine to Light Mod. and Improved Mod. which do the job well on many species. In fact, that combination is my favorite for all the gauges.

I have a 20 ga 28" repro with Briley thin wall chokes installed. They were in the gun when I bought it. I have had no problems with them and don't really have any complaints. I have found that a choke of .005 and .012 is a wonderful combination on the clays and dove field.

I think you can get away with Brileys in 12 and 20 gauge repros. The 28ga barrels are so thin to start with that there is not enough metal in most of them to install chokes.I have thinwalls in my 30" 12ga barrels, but have never seen a 28ga with them.

I owned a 28GA Repro with 28" barrels that had Briley thin walls installed. Like a fool I sold it.
