The late bonus Goose season ended last Sunday 31 Jan- very "iffy" hereabouts, the usual winter picked corn fields with the decoys and the camo field blinds didn't work well- as many farmers left the best fields with unpicked corn, due to high moisture content last Nov--

So it's the rivers mainly--strange too, as we usually see scaup and buffleheads, but now just common mergansers and some resident mallards. Did many a few "honkers" hunting solo, right place, right time, unfrozen trigger finger etc-- but not a "Banner season" indeed.

So a few pending shoots this month and next- Club shoots for Tower birds and a few DU events- otherwise I'm stripping down and cleaning some double guns for possible parts resale in my Gunner's Den--re-reading favorite books- Buckingham, Gene Hill, Robert Ruark, Mike Mcintosh--and avoiding "cabin fever"--stay well!!:bigbye:

And another thought....since I have been on this web site...I have been impressed by the passion you guys show for your parkers. And I must say that I like it. Thern my mind wonders....do these guys show this much passion for their wives? I have decided that you do and all have fantastic marriages!!! smiles.

Not here yet but I can show this from the on-line ad. I had asked here earlier about the case and learned that the only verified true Parker cases are in the early history and made of wood (oak I think was mentioned). It has been restocked but the price was right. I note that there are a few more than me who think about next season as soon as the current one ends. That may be some syndrome that defies treatment. Will post more detailed images once it arrives. Cheers, Jack

Lee: Life long acquaintance with the family VH and only 42 years with my bride. I was warned about Parkeritis when I first found this forum to resolve an issue with the family gun. I should have run right then. The family gun has five friends safely stored and awaiting the sixth. I'm not collecting more brides. While the one I have has sustained handling marks, that only adds to her character. She is perfect

Sitting here - and got an Internet connection with electricity on? Whoo hoo! Have a few meetings to try our damndest to get food to thousands. The UN troops have been wonderful. The local politics are stupid. Food is a Huge problem and apparently USA Today ran a small article about the unrest/riots. So anyway I'm looking into flight charters out of Florida and staging in Cayes. I want to use hundreds of locals as part of the SOLUTION rather then the problem in distibution. I spent two days on a small scale proving the concept works.

Aside from that, working on getting medical supplies to some of the smaller clinics who are over run with fractures and traumas and fever/wounds. Mst med supplies are sitting in Port-au-Prince without any plan to get them here? That could change I hope.

What my day today also is - have to restock the orphanage for food as we are tryng to feed some of the kids from PaP. And trying to hook onto a puddlejumper later to get home to stage flights into Cayes.

If anyone wants to help me make it through my day - please feel free to think about how we can collect/stage food in Florida and med supplies.OK? I mean it - I am asking for your help with maybe you or business contacts?

If I get home tonight I'll try post some thoughts if you want? If you folks don't think this subject is appropriate for the site- maybe we can move it elsewhere,ok?

Anyway that's what I'm doing today. Aren't you sorry you asked :)

Got'ta. And did someone say "snow"????

Best to all!!!!

Waiting for decent weather to shoot trap and dirty up my squeeky clean shootin irons once again.
I'm sorting and rearranging fly fishing gear. Also ordered more black gnats on eBay to replace the ones that I have been robbed of. Any thoughts on leader material (six "x" mostly ) as what I have is not so trustworthy as I found out the hard way.
This time of year is shear hell on an outdoor type, ie day dreams do not have much of a calming effect on me. It only wets the gun/flyfish appetite and reduces me to the use of Famous Grouse but that tastes GOOD.

That's one grouse season that never closes here. Whilst enjoying morning coffee, the doorbell rang, Charlie and Kyra immediately investigated and the postal service got a royal welcome. After all was settled down and Charlie remembered that she really likes this guy, I signed for the Trojan. Opened the package and found the old case to be in sad condition (not unexpected) and "locked". No key anywhere. Never having had success as a lock-picker, I called the seller and was told, it is only latched - push down on the top because of the bubble wrap inside and I could slide the lock cover to the right and find my gun. Did that and found a "decent" Trojan. By that, I mean a safe shooter and not a collector piece (not unexpected). The wood work is not a quality fit to the metal and there are some suspect screws in the floor plate. Barrels, trigger guard, floor plate, top lever, safety button all very blued. Frame looks like there might be some case color but there is a lot of black/grey smudging (is that an attempt at re-coloring??). The barrels are on face but without the forend in place, there is some wiggle room between lugs and frame. (suggests a lot of use???) The top lever sits slightly left of center again suggesting a lot of use The butt has a red rubber pad and black spacer. Assembled it and it feels totally tight. Had a look at my flying mount pheasant, shouldered this gun and I'm thinking, good to go for October. It will be the first Parker shot this year but the others will get there turns. Pictures will follow but right now mother reminded me that I should be setting up a dog kennel, so off to that project.

Cheers,
Jack

what am I doing???? My wife has been gone for 10days, I have been healing up from bladder surgery, taking physical therapy for my knee, looking at my parkers ,looking for parker's, cleaning up the parker 16 ga hammer gun, dreaming of all the good times I have had with my parker friends and surviving the cold. I did take my fly rod out to a trout pond and caught four nice rainbows, one of which I had tonight for dinner withsome wonderful white wine. Got the carpets cleaned, light bulbs replaced, my man cave cleaned.

Now that's a full plate James. Healing after the knife is never a good time. Wish you well. Hopefully all is ready for your wife's return just a few days ahead of Valentine's Day. I've been dealing with dog kennel modification in order to have a permanent cozy set up inside my little hunting buggy. Doing dog hikes, taking pictures and reading the forums. Starting to feel a bit like those four you hooked. Here's a few pics from today of my Trojan. Prior to being "educated" here, I would have been pleased to have this gun - and I still am but now I know all its warts but hey, it's one of them great Parker guns that nobody's making anymore. (Somebody did try to make this one from a variety of sources it appears but the metal numbers match). Cheers,

Hard to beat a Parker Trojan for a great field gun- inspite of the few flaws you noted, there is always one basic truism in owning/shooting a Parker Trojan- Can't be "upgraded" and passed off as a higher grade Parker, as I have seen done with some Vulcan grades- What gauge, chokes and barrel specs??

A new scope for a M70 pre-64 in .220 Swift? Delivered by the "Little Brown Santa Claus"- aka- UPS driver perhaps?? Sounds good. What make and series scope and mounts are you using on this 500 yard range "Gopher grinder"?
I love to snipe prairie doggies and woodchucks- I have a "hybrid" Winnie .220 Swift-my late father also loved that type of rifle shooting, and in 1935 he bought a M54 SuperGrade in that great 4000 fps. Mach whatever caliber- After it came to me I rebuilt it to a 1940 style bolt, release and safety- Thanks to Maynard Buehler, installed a Timney trigger and replace the sheet metal trigger guard and floor plate with a Blackburn forged series- No drop down floor plate of course, but this M54-70 "dinger" is basically a single shot bolt action, of course I can eject unfired rounds by cycling the bolt too- I have a 4x14x44 Vari-X 111 leupold on it now, Dad had an older Stith 12x with the spring adjustment bases- barrel and throat are as new, 26" stainless barrel- if I had a $1 for every round through that old Winnie since Dad bought it, I would have Warren Buffett listening to me on occasion.

Sorry about the bladder and knee business- one of my good friends from our Hunt Club is a spry 81- shoots either Over-under or M21, and has had a reoccurance of prostate cancer- treatable, but that radiation process is no picnic- can't put a price tag on good health and good vision, even if you aren't an avid shotgunner as I am-- priceless

I'll pass on the Famous grouse (or infamous when you miss one in the thick stuff and he roars away like a F-16 with Chuck Yeager as the pilot)-- but Yukon Jack and Tullamore Dew are the winter's fireside sippin' choices- always think about Yukon poet Robert W. Service and writer Jack london when I look over the bottle's label-- "Oh I have clinched and closed with the naked North, I've learned to defy and defend-- Shoulder to shoulder we have fought it out, but the North must win in the end"--:cool::cool:

James: Just re-read your post and you have nicely described the symptoms of Parkeritis "Looking at, looking for, cleaning up and dreaming about Parkers"

Dave: Yep, got it wet. Thought I had it cold enough to not melt any snow, but the frame still had enough latent heat to do the job. First reaction was damn Next reaction that should make a nice image Third reaction don't think this gun is any stranger to water droplets Last reaction I'll bet Destry would think this to be the norm for any decent hunt

I thought I would beat the "itis" but it will be a long process. Serialization book on its way. Heard somewhere that was supposed to help but not sure how.

Cheers,
Jack

The 16 ga hammer gun has quite a story. I was at a gun show and this kid shows up with a couple of gun cases. In the inquiry as what he had, he said
he had a couple of parkers, said he had a 12ga and a 20 ga hammer gun.
Needless to say, my interest really picked up. The 12ga was beat up bu the hammer gun was ok. I really didn't pay to much attention to the ga, but I could not get him to price it. I got his phone # and then called him later in the week. Anyway, I bought it from him and found out it was actually a 16 ga.
I will see if I can get the pix to come thru.

As a side note I just got a beat up old VH 12 with 30" barrels back from Keith Kearcher. I bought it a couple of years ago at Tulsa for $250. Only think wrong with it was a cracked stock, worn out back trigger sear, off face, poorly refinished, choked 35 and 40, the barrels were ring bulged and dented.

Keith welded the hook and fixed the sear and added sling swivels and fixed the stock, fixed the barrel dents and bulges, opened the chokes. Charged me $620. I now have $870 dollars in the gun and I bet I can get $300 for it anytime.

I am going to use it for my field trial gun this Spring.
