New Years Day Shoot - Major Waldrons - Barrington NH

For those interested in attending I will once again open up the Major Waldron's Skeet and Trap fields for a New Year's Day shoot.

Shooting will start at 9AM and I will be at the club by 7:30 to get things set up and turn the heat on.

I will send out a confirmation message the shoot is on around 5:30AM. Right now the weather forecast looks to be good but very cold so dress accordingly.

Cost per round is $5 for non members of the club.

I will bring hot dogs and buns, please feel free to bring any food you would like to share. The club has coffee, water and soda available.

Bring your tightest shooting gun of any guage and we can shoot an elimination aka Annie Oakley. If we have at least 10 shooters and five 10 guage guns we can try another 10ga backing up a smaller gauge from the 27 yard line.

Looks like the weather will be sunny and COLD. Temps are predicted to be between 16 to 24 degrees during the day and wind chills 5 to 14. BTFE's will not be needed. Snow is not expected to start until Thursday morning some time so those traveling should have good weather fo the drive home.

The club has added a 3rd trap field recently. We will start with Field 1 set up for Skeet and Field 2 for Trap. Shooting can start at 9AM. Non-members rate is $5 per round.

I understand some of the regular shooters at the club will be joining us and if needed we can open the extra trap field to reduce any wait time we might encounter.

For those interested in visiting the Kittery Trading Post while they are in the area the store is open on New Years Day from 10 AM - 6 PM.

It's one of our 911s in the snow.

I love them in any weather - both the camera and the cars...

I knew the KTP didn't pay their employees very much, but 32 years in the same car, that's terrible. :)

When I ran parts & accessories departments at Volvo dealers, and especially during the last six years or so, I stocked a few hundred tires all of the time and stocked and sold Pirelli's, Blizzak's, Vredestein's, Michelin's, just to name a few. Winter tire technology (notice we don't say "snow tires" any more because we usually drive on dry pavement in the winter) has advanced by light years in these few short years. Winter tires have been redeveloped using a composition which actually gets softer as the weather gets colder, allowing for far superior traction under all conditions encountered in winter driving. I run aggressive winter tires all year long and swear by them. Michelin Pilot Alpins probably ARE the best winter tires you can buy..... but they ARE costly.... but they DO give you an advantage - professional driver (I've driven with the pro in the Michelin clip) or average Joe, like me.

The January 1st 2014 shoot is in the history books. Attendees endured a very cold and sunny day with a fairly stiff breeze at times keeping wind chills in the single digits all day. We shot trap, skeet and protection. In the protection Frank Cronin and his ringer team mate Troy who was shooting a funny looking Perazzi trap gun beat the rest of field breaking 18 from the 27 yard line. They bested Robin Lewis and myself by a bird but we were following the rules and shooting Parker guns ;). Frank wowed the club regulars when he joined them on the first round of trap and touched off is infamous 1 1/4 ounce Black Powder loads in his 5 frame hammer 10. I was hoping it would have shattered some of the ice on the field but it just wasn't quite enough. Fortunately everyone stayed on their feet today as there was a lot of slippery blue ice from the rain we had early last week.

Breakfast goodies were provided by Frank Cronin and lunch was Billy Chili (Venison) Janelle and Bob Weeman who created some type of chicken gumbo dish. Both were delicious.

We saw the AAA truck go by and I understand they had to go retrieve a Porsche something or other that got stuck on the way to the shoot.

Several of the club regulars joined us in the morning to hear their guns go bang on New Years. Among them were Glenn Watts who was trying out a very nice new to him Parker SC SBT and his friend Mark Callahan who had a B grade he shot for the first time. I didn't get a good look at the gun or chance to take a picture of it. I finally got to look at Dean's D grade 10ga hammer gun, what a beauty.

We had a really good time shooting and visiting. I brought five hammer guns for shoot-n-show-n-tell and actually shot four of them. The fifth was Tom Latham's twenty-gauge lifter which is well worn but closes like a vault and displays some wonderful Stub Twist barrel pattern.

As you can see, skeet stations six, seven and eight were literally a skating rink... on a slope no less... What FUN that was! :eek:

The fields really should have been sanded. I used every bit of ice melt the club had and I took the carpet runner out of the shotgun shack and put it between stations 5 and 6. It was all I could do, and it was kind of painful to watch you use one of those lovely hammer guns for a cane, (yup he really did that).

I have noticed more hammer guns in attendance each New Years Day despite the smaller crowds. Seems they are growing in popularity with double gun shooters.

Now it's time to get ready for snowstorm/blizzard Hercules. For those of you not living in the Northeast, we have a storm bearing down us for tomorrow and Friday that will bring a foot of snow, 35 mph winds and wind chills in the -20 below range. I am thinking we should consider moving the New Years Day shoot to the trap and skeet club in Vero Beach Florida :)

There are a lot of shoots involving Parkers and other fine American doubles all over the country. We don't hear about a lot of them and California has a pretty big group of SXS shooters who hold several big shoots that we practically never hear about until they are ancient history. I wonder where they advertise their events?

In the ANNOUNCEMENTS column in each and every issue of Parker Pages I clearly state: "Please Note that Parker Pages is now reciprocating with the L. C. Incidentally, I rarely, if ever, get anything from these organizations to include in the Announcements column.

The Announcements column doesn't begin and end with the organizations I have listed - anyone who organizes or knows the details of any event that PGCA members would be interested in knowing about should be sending me the particulars so I can get them into the very next issue of Parker Pages. I would if I could but I simply don't have the time or energy to go soliciting for events to announce and sincerely hope that others do and will forward information to me.

Speaking of small doublegun shoots. The NYD shoot at MWSA has always been pretty much run what you brung. All old doubleguns are interesting. The doublegun shoots do get some interest and attention from non double gun shooters. Tim Day and Glenn Watts come to mind, Tim stopped by, shot a round and visited and then headed over to the rifle range. Glenn shot his new SBT and pulled targets for us on the protection. Four or Five years ago Glenn didn't own a Parker, now he has several and is talking about getting a 10ga. Both of them became curious about doubleguns from "our" activitities, so these shoots can grow new double gun aficionados.

I also found out why we had a group of the regular die hard trap shooters join us in the morning and then leave. The trap shooting club in North Hampton NH has held a NYD fun shoot for as long as I can remember, 30 years or more. That club unfortunately was recently told to cease and desist their shooting by the NH Dept. of Environmental Services because lead shot was being deposited in wetlands. This is the second club in the nearby area to suffer this fate, Exeter NH being the other. It's the the third if the skeet field in Farmington remains compromised with unusable stations because of the same problem. The loss of farms and shooting clubs has been the sportsmans fate for the last 30 years in this area, sad.
