View Full Version : Mec fix

I have two 600jr's - one for 10 and 12ga. When reloading with the short kit I bent the legs out so the shell plate would sit flat. When a shell would stick in the final crimp die, on the up stroke the shell would come out if the plate. Get out the channel locks. Getting tired of this, I decided to run a 1/4x20 screw through the plate and spacer and into the base of the reloader. I took the plate and spacer off and found a hole already on the base - one was already tapped and the other wasn't. After taking the column off, I tapped the one. Now everything stays in place, even when doing 2 3/4" old swollen paper shells. Anyone else have fixes for their Mec presses ?

I thought about anchoring the short kit, it just seems like it would not be tight, but have not had a issue yet, and I had added another 1/4 " spacer on the 10 to make it 2 5/8ths
I have the Jr in 10, 12, 20 and just bought the die set for 16 to convert an extra 12 to that guage.
I don't reload as much as I used to, but have not had any issues to fix so far.

Compared to the 9000, MEC's 600 is virtually idiot proof.
I could fill a book with the "inside tips" I've had to use to make cartridges on my three 9000 presses! Still, a MEC is the standard. God bless 'em.

At the moment I have 600's for the 10 , 12 , 16 and 20 . In the past I only used PW 800B's , 800C's and 375C's .
I still would prefer all PW units but there's alot to be said for the economy of 600's !

I also have three 650's and a 9000h. About the only thing with them is a dime or penny under the stand for repriming - gets the primer level with the bushing. For the 12ga I also use Mec's smooth starting crimp die. It's made for paper shells but works for 6 or 8 point crimps - this way I don't ever have to change the start crimp die. At one time I was loading 2" shells [ too much time on my hands ] and made a longer plunger for the final crimp station - still have it somewhere. Mecs are the only presses I've used for shotgun shells and I'm very happy with them. I have a PW for 20ga I bought used and never used - sell it cheap if someone wants it.

I have 5 Mec 9000's three of which are set up for 2 1/2 inch shells in 16,20& 410 and have never had any problems with them. Befor shooting season gets underway I hope to add a 2 /1 inch 12 9000 to the mix.

Mark, sent you an email, sorry it took so long. I'm having trouble walking - nerves being pinched in the spline that go to my legs. Hurt so much almost got out the Parker and did myself in. Finally got some relief - God, drugs can be great. Going in to get another shot in the spline Monday and then see a specialist in Jan. Oh well, growing old ain't for sissy's.
