In 20's vintage guns, how were the barrels joined? Dovetailed, chopper lump? I can't find clues examining my VH.

The barrels on Parkers have always been assembled the same way. Locking lug and the chamber area of the tubes are silver soldered together. All other parts included the forend loop are soft soldered together. Rib extension is soldered and also held in with a screw through the top that is dressed down to eliminate the slot.

As I understand it, dovetailed lumps have a slot cut into them that fits into the lump of the other barrel. The chopper lump is half of the lump braised or sodered to the corresponding lump for the other barrel.

I think you may get a better and more accurate idea of the different barrel joining systems by looking at Hallowell's website, "Abbreviations and Definitions" section.

It has been my understanding that the locking lug was joined with the barrels by brazing. Most that I have examined had a distinct brass colored joint filler.

The Parker Story contains an entire chapter on barrels and borings and answers these questions as it relates to Parkers.
