View Full Version : Gun my SxS Sabot gun project back.

This gun build has been a while in the making. About 2 years since came up with the idea and found the builder.
I wanted to convert a SxS shotgun into a 20g. rifled Sabot gun. I really wanted to build it on a Parker action, but the barrel builder advised against it since it is single bolted and of 100 year old steel. I took his advise and went with a more modern spanish 12g. Magnum as a donor gun. It is triple bolted and had a greener cross bolt and also side clips.
I just got the gun back and it is in condition to hunt with. I still have to restock it with something nice and most likely get the action colored. But that will have to wait until after the season and for when I can find time for some of my own guns.
It has a Leupold 1-4 shotgun scope on it with talley rings and quick release bases. 1/4 turn releases the scope from the rib for using the iron sights.
Barels are 24" long and fully rifled. Robert Hynden in Iowa built the barrels and I think he did a great and clean job.
Below are some of the in process photos and as it is now.

When I first saw Galazan's 20 ga. Pro-Hunter I wanted one.... and now here's a better one. Let us know how it is for accuracy. Can you regulate it?

conneticut shotgun had a booth at the southern. I handled one of there 20ga slug guns. At 5 to 7000.00 they are a lot over priced. Easnt a bad gun just not worth the money.

When they first came to marker they were about $4200.
Sorry Brian. Please tell us if the gun was targeted by the barrel maker.
How are the scope mounts attached to the rib?

Yes, the barrels were regulated and targeted by the maker. They're fixed for regulation, vs the CSMC gun is adjustable for regulation with different loads. They are regulated for the loads he makes which uses Lyman slugs. He also proofed the barrels as well.
The scope attaches to dovetails that are machined right into the sides of the rib.

Really cool Brian. I've always wanted a SxS slug gun as most of my deer hunting is done with an 11-87. It feels like a club in my hands compared to a classic double gun. Good luck with it this season.

Brian, what does she weigh?

9 lbs. 2 oz. is the weight now with the scope on it.

Hence the sling swivels. Nice.

Brian do you know if he glued the barrels into the monoblock or soldered them in.

Love it, Brian. Great idea. I imagine it would be a hell of a hog gun as well.

Tubes are soldered into the monoblock.

Here are photos of a .405 double rifle that the same builder put over her on a Sauer action. This is his personal gun. I stocked it for him.

You built yours on a 12 gauge frame . Does Galazan use a 12 gauge frame as well or do they opt for a 20 gauge ?
Also are you going to try more modern say Hornady SST or Remington AccuTip factory sabot loads ?
Ever since I saw the Galazan gun I've lusted for one myself to use on the Eastern Shore of Viginia and Maryand . But so far all I've got are bolt action fully rifled 12 and 20 gauge Savage guns . But I gotta say for the money the Savage 220 and my old Savage 210F are both very nice deer sluggers . But then I have Leupold Vari XII 3-9's on top both of them !

Brian did he machine the monoblock from scracth or did he cut off the barrels and use the rear portion for the monoblock. Its hard to tell from the photos.

If a fellow had say a 16 gauge Utica Fox Sterlingworth since it would more then likely have been made about 1930 or later . Would that be considered strong enough and big enough to make a 20 gauge rifled gun ?

The original 12g monoblock was used. Barrels were cut of in don't of the chambers.
I would assume that the CSMC is built on the 20g frame since they are making the barrels 100% from scratch.
When the builder and I were talking about donor guns, he gently frowned upon using a fox, LC or NID. Not only because of it being single bolted, but due to the fact it is bolted through the rib extension.

Are you going to use sabot factory loads in your gun ?
Also if you don't mind saying what should I expect to pay to get a set of barrels made ?
I can do the rust blue myself .

I purchased a bunch of loads from the maker which were the loads that the barrels were regulated for. But I will also try it with factory sabots and see how they react.
Let's just say that the cost to build the barrels was about half what an RBL professional costs.
If you want, PM me and I can get you in touch with Mr. Hynden directly.

Is he the fellow in Colorado that wrote a book about making a double rifle from a shotgun ?

A sterlingworth would not be the best action for this sort of thing. Brian selected a frame that is very sutable for this sort of thing . Two bites with a greener cross bolt is about as good as it gets. The side clips on the frame help controll the torque from the barrels. Brian will be fireing smokeless loads with heavy slugs. An action with a single bite will shoot loose very quickly. You need at least two bites.

No, that is Ellis Brown. He is still making conversions too. Very expensive as well.
