View Full Version : Firing Pin distance

Guys what is the distance between firing pins on a O frame and OO frame, hammerless guns?

Thanks

TPS book #2 page 527 gives a difference of 1/16 of an inch.

For those mechanically inclined. Would that distance make an difference in how a firing pin would hit a primer? For example could a set of OO frame barrels be fitted to an O frame and be functional for shooting?

1/16" would certainly strike the primers differently but it is pretty likely that you would get ignition most of the time.

20 gauge? 28 gauge? The first 28 ga. guns Parker made were on the 20 ga. 0-Frame but the barrels were bored for the twenty ga. 0-Frame pin seperation.

I you had such a set of 00 frame barrels, the owner of a 00 frame gun would likely pay you a higher price for them than an owner of an 0 frame gun. The 0 frame guy would still have a hacked up gun with the 00 barrels installed. The 00 guy would have a wonderful two barrel set that is not "hacked up".

I would suspect there is difference in width and height of the breech end of the barrels and the 00-frame barrels should be narrower and lower than the width and height of the breech balls on the 0-frame.

nothing will be hacked up. this is a theoretical question. I was curious as this discussion came up this past weekend. But Mr Murphy thank you for your response.

per the TPS there is no difference in height of breach balls or anywhere else except for width across the balls.

my biggest ? was about being able to get the gun to fire.

It should fire.

John,
The 1/16" or (.062) is the total differance between the two frame sizes. The reality is that each pin would be off-set half that distance or 1/32" (.0325). I can not believe that an off-set hit of .0325 would not result in a 100% primer ignition.

thank you Mr Frey.

That was very helpful.

My comment was only addressing the value of a set of orphan 00 frame barrels, which would be worth thousands more to an owner of a 00 frame gun than to the owner of an 0 frame gun. Hard for you guys to believe, but I have never owned a 00 frame gun. However, I'm looking.

I believe you Bill, but it's a shocking revelation to say the least. There's still plenty of nice OO's out there and a man of your means should have no trouble finding one with some provenance.:) Times 'a wasting.

Daryl, my preferred 00 frame 28 gauge gun, in case anyone is listening, is a way brown gun with worn wood finish, all original, but priced for its condition.
