What does " skivved" hulls mean? In an earlier post on low pressure shells, it was mentioned that AA and STS were skivved but Federals were not?

for leather work, it means a tapered thinning cut on the edge of the material

so i would guess it means thinning the plastic on the mouth of the case

OH is correct. A skivved case mouth is made thinner for crimping etc. Even Federal target load hulls (purple color) are skivved. But many of Federal's field load hulls are not -- or at least very much less skivved.

Here is an example of the tool that will skive your hulls.:)

Thank you Robert. I was a bit confused by the misspelling of the word skived... not skivved.

I know BP's has tools to do it, but I've never found a reason to skive a hull. When I cut down 10ga hulls they still crimp just fine. Does anyone do it ?

I use it after cutting down hulls that I will roll crimp. It removes the burr from the inside of the hull and bells the mouth a bit, allowing the wad to slip right in. It also "reconditions" the mouth of roll crimped hulls after being fired.
I think the thinned hull mouth starts to roll over quicker making a nicer crimp.

Originally, when hand loading hulls with fiber wads in a push tube loader, the skived hull mouth would help prevent the wad catching on the hull mouth, cocking or breaking the wad.

Robert, I usually roll crimp just paper hulls. My cut plastic 10ga hulls are done on a Mec that has a wad guide, so wads go in rather easy. Because 10ga hulls are so expensive I just star crimp. If I roll crimp 12ga plastic hulls, they're just thrown away after shooting. Harold, I've never noticed a difference in the mouths of Federal hulls compared to the Rem or Win hulls, they all seem the same to me other than the Feds are a straight walled hull and the Rem and Win are tapered. You might want one if reloading plastic roll crimped hulls as it would help open the case mouth again. Because I use one of those metal bits that go in a drill press to roll crimp, they seem pretty easy to roll crimp without skiving.
