new parker owner w/pics

Bought my first sxs double about a week ago after looking at many. As I did my homework I was on the site many times. So I though I would say hello and post some pics for you all to dissect. Hopefully I can get all of them to post. To the best of my budding knowledge it is a Parker GH built in 1920. Barrels measure 28". I have not dug out my calipers to measure the chokes yet. It does not appear to have any work done to the inside of the barrels. No dings in the barrel, and they are shiny. It seems that someone put a venilated buttpad on it, but I could be wrong on that. It does have the Parker Bros Meridian conn grip cap. Any other info would be great. I know value can be a tough nut, but I am curious to how good of deal I made.

Jason, Welcome! That looks to be a great gun and a 12 bore on a 1 frame! May I invite you to join the PGCA we are a great bunch of guy's and with membership a research letter on your new gun will only cost $40 bucks. Your GSP seems to like modeling....:)And that Ford ain't too shabby either.

I got lucky on the GSP modeling. His attention span is still a little short. But he's a great, well listening dog, especially for a puppy.

As far as the gun goes, Is a 1 frame smaller or larger than a 1 1/2 or 2? The gun feels very good in the hand.

Is there an issues with modern ammo for a 1 frame? Obviously 2 3/4 shells and no steel. Is there any other concerns ammo wise?

Just be kind to the stock and keep the pressure of the shells you use preferably below 8,000 p.s.i. It has Parker Special Steel barrels and was made for 2 3/4" shells.

It loks to have a 'trap style' comb. Can you show closer pictures of the stock especially the grip area and the comb as well as a shot from the top of the stock?

Welcome aboard. That is a beautiful looking gun and I wish you good shooting with it. The 1 frame is smaller than the 1 1/2 and 2 frames. I also recommend joining the PGCA and then ordering a factory letter on your gun. It is a beautiful letter and it allows you to see how your gun was configured when it left the factory as far as date built, date shipped, stock length and usually drop at heel, barrel length, chokes and to whom it was shipped. Again, welcome aboard. Let us know how your gun shoots for you.

Smaller the no the smaller the frame size. Dose anyone no what the little mark next to the letter s is. Neat truck and good looking dog. Looks like a good sound G grade.

It is a P and together with the S it is the stamp for Parker Special Steel barrels.

To the right of the S is HT over A believed to indicate Heat Treated Annealed.

It looks to my eye like I see a Remington era repair code of the left barrel flat, just along the left side of the lug -- something something 3?

I was looking at getting a letter, but when I typed in the serial number it told me there were no records for my gun. Does that mean I shouldn't bother? Or are there other sources of info to base research on?

I was also just looking at some pics in other albums. I noticed that some stocks have what appears to be a metal 'shield' pressed into the butt stock on the bottom. What is that about? Mine does not have one.

Chamber pressure stresses barrels, recoil stresses wood. (Loose stocks are what really stress' wood as the receiver then hammers the stock on each firing). Take it to a good smith or learn how to make sure the screws are tight that hold the stock on. You will need to have the right screw drivers to avoid buggering them.

A fluid steel gun will handle the pressures of all off the shelf ammo.

If it were my gun I would shoot mostly 7/8 and 1 ounce loads, perhaps some 1 1/8 ounce for hunting, keeping velocity to 1200 fps and under.

Reloading is the best way to tailor these loads for old guns especially if you are more than an occasional shooter.

That is a great gun for one's first Parker!!! Congratulations.

PS. I don't know if anybody told you but Parker guns seldom stay only children very long.

PPS. A shield was provided by Parker for owner to personalize the gun with their initials. A "badge" on V, P and G grades, ovals on higher grades. Only the Trojan came without one to my knowledge. Lack of a shield could be evidence of a restock. Might be good to have a look under the trigger guard some day as Parker stamped the serial number on the wood under the guard.

Dave, that was one theory before Dave Suponski sent pictures of the barrel flats that accompanied Charlie's article. HT/A appears on that very unfinished 'in the rough' set of barrels, so that theory was pretty much dismissed... but there is no definite proof of the Heat Treated Annealed thoery yet either.

I just want to thank you all for your help current and future. I bought the gun to be a shooter, you know nice days in the field, maybe on the water for ducks. I have been pleasantly surprised with all the findings to this point. I will continue to post when I get out and shoot it.
