Looking in the 2012 Alliant Reloaders Guide they list for a 1 1/4oz load in a Fed or Rem hull 29grs of Green Dot and a Rem SP-10 wad with 6 - .135 wads in it. In the Rem hull they show 31grs of Unique and the same wad combo. The GD has 8800psi and the Unique has 7600psi and all at 1265fps. I would think you could go down a grain or two and use 1 1/8 oz of shot. Thought I'd just throw out some different options to try. Of course, being someone looking for the cheaper way of reloading, the Red Dot load is probably better.

paul i think a fellow is gonna look hard and long to be the reddot load in 10 ga..its the lowest grains of powder i ve seen used in a 10 ga load..and got plenty of power...i m even loading some 8 ga loads with it with just about 3 more grains added tt the 10 ga load.. i shot some 8 ga loads yesterday with it..fellow can load several more shells with useing reddot...charlie

In this time of powder shortages having more options is a good thing. I have been shooting 22 grains of Green Dot with 1 1/8 ounce for targets and 27 grains of Green Dot with 1 1/4 for hunting for a couple of years. The GD load you mentioned above was the inspiration for me to drop the powder charge and try the GD in the Short Ten. I recently began "experimenting" with Red Dot and settled on the 19 grain 1 1/8 ounce loading. For hunting I might try 1 1/4 with 20 grains of Red Dot. The Hercules data I found from 1968 had 1 1/4 ounce loads using 29 grains of Red Dot, I would not shoot that load in a fluid steel barrel, that has got to be a Boomer! Again I would start at 19 or 20 grains. Scott K. has been shooting 1 to 1 1/4 ounce with 700-x, a good powder but harder to find right now then the Dot powders. I wish I had access to a 10ga pressure barrel, if I did I would spend a lot of time coming with Short Ten loads for the more popular powders.

pete i wish you had a test barrel for the short ten... im sure we would have many more load choices if you had one of these test barrels...the short ten is king in my book lots of fellows are missing out on this great old round....long live the short ten.... charlie

In the past I've used 1oz and 17 to 19grs of 700x that was listed in the Sherman Bell data. I'm now using Promo [ same as Red Dot ] or 700X for my light 12ga loads so I guess I'm all set for 12 or 10ga loads. Sometimes I use fiber wads which really softens the recoil. It's fun to see all that paper shoot out the end of the barrel when shooting clays but I'm not sure of the pressure or velocity. I read once that back in the day when fiber wads were the norm that if the reloader was going to use the new plastic wads to decrease the powder charge by 10%. So I'll assume that by going to fiber wads I'm safe. The only draw back is the cost and the extra time it takes to reload fiber wads.
