Had a similar situation happen years ago (before AI) on a duck hunt. 3 hunters in a blind a flock of ducks work into the decoys, and after a volley of gunfire four ducks hit the water. My Labrador retrieved the three furthest ducks one at a time like a champ. the duck nearest to the blind was a beautiful drake pintail floating stone cold on the water. My Lab brought him to hand, I realized that the Pintail had his eyes open and was blinking. I set him down and he stood up looked at all three of us who were in disbelief and he flew off perfectly. To this day we have no clue what happened. He didn't have a ruffled feather or a drop of blood anywhewre on him.
