With someone holding the barrels open as far as possible, one can remove the screw that holds the cocking hook I believe. Works on 12 GA guns so I believe it will work on others. This avoids removing the floor plate. But be careful not to loose any parts when the hook, screw, spring, & pin come out. Then you may be able to figure out the problem.
