Yes Mike it will seriously hurt the value of the gun. If the length of pull is just right I would suggest using a piece of fine grit sand paper or a piece of rubber (bike innertube etc) glued to the but plate with a removable adhesive like rubber cement. Or if you could use a little more length of pull buy a leather slip on pad which may member here use. Just remember to take the pad off as it can leave a mark on the stock if left on for storage.
