Default Where would we be without WD?

General ask for the group here... is it ok to wipe down Damascus and just any of these older mod parkers and lefevers with WD40? Is there any negative to the Dam finish and or the wood?

Thank you for your time...

WD40 is not a good lubricant for guns, it was made to displace water. Best to use a good gun oil and grease.

As Chuck said it is not a good lubricant and will be better than nothing for wiping down metal especially if you are caught in the rain.

I think you'd be better off with Hoppes gun oil which is ubiquitous. I typically use Barricade on a cloth if I'm storing it a long time.

I'm not going to argue whether WD40 is any good at 'lubricating', that isn't what the OP asked. He asked if it was ok to use to wipe the gun down with. I use it all the time for a wipe down. WD dries up fairly soon after application and leaves a fine film on the surface. It doesn't build up like other oils and each time it's wiped down, it re-emulsifies the old coat. I have never found it to be harmful to a damascus pattern, bluing, or wood finish. Others like Ballistol. I don't.

Plus if you have WD40 you can spray it on bass lures, it acts as an attractant. Just another helpful hint from your Uncle Larry.

As always, thanks again gentlemen.. Yes, the main goal is just to knock down the fingerprints and such so glad to know it won't damage the Damascus finish.. I'd go for more of a better lube when I get into the guts.

Cheers
