Original recoil pad?
 

I have a 1 frame 12 gauge GH (198580) that I acquired some years ago from a relative and it is sporting a white line recoil pad. The letter doesn’t mention a pad of any sort so I am assuming that this was a later addition. I would like to replace this pad since it is hard and starting to crumble in places. What I would like to know is what would have been installed from the factory in 1922 if this had been ordered with a pad?

You cannot go wrong with a silvers style or Noshoc pad.

So, follow-up question….where would I find a Silvers? Apparently not available out of UK any longer. The CSMC pads don’t specify where made so don’t know about them. Maybe a Noshok would be a better option but are they all just reproductions? How to determine if good quality?

The Griffin and Howe repro Silver pads were of very high quality, but only if you can find one.

There are also orders for guns with "Plain Pad" and Jostam Pad requested. Our best guess is "Plain Pad" as it is difficult to read some of the handwriting in the books.

Further to my recoil pad questions… I have removed the White Line pad and found this writing on the stock. The stock is not completely flat but I am hesitant to sand if this is something I should preserve. The number shown is the serial number of the gun with an additional -195 appended. I also note that a different pad had been previously installed (maybe?) given the additional screw hole.

I wouldn't sand it off because I like to preserve history. I am odd about things like that!

It is a difficult project to install a pad on a curved surface. If you don't know whose initials are written on that stock, I would sand the butt flat. A 1922 patent No Shoc repro would be a great pad for a 1922 gun.

I have a couple of Jostam Hy-Gun pads never installed on guns... one is marked Large and the other, not in a box, is the next size down... if you're interested.

I can take measurements on both if you're interested.
